Lyrics
Upavara zhālī leka lāḍakī lagnālā ālī
Svayaṃvarācī ticyā ghoṣaṇā Drupadāne kelī
"My cherished daughter has come of age to marry"
Drupada made a proclamation of her Self-Choice
Suvarṇa-stambhāvarī basavilī phiratī matsy'ākṛtī
Telāmājī bimba pāhunī chedila ho koṇa tī
Chedila tyālā vivāha-mālā ghālīla Pāñcālī
On a golden pillar, he fixed a revolving fish-shape
"Watching its reflection in oil, say, who will pierce it?
Pañcāla's girl will confer the bridal garland on him who pierces"
Ratīhunī tī at'īva sundara subhagā guṇa-śālinī
Maū reśamī alaka-bhāra tara khyāta svarūpāhunī
Dhanurdharāñcyā manīcī āśā āvhānā ṭapalī
She exceeds Pleasure in beauty, desirable, virtuous ...
Soft, silky tress-masses more famous than her own looks
In bowmen's thoughts, aspiration arrived to invite them
Svayaṃvarāçā bharalā maṇḍapa, gardī tarī tī kitī
Deśa-deśīçe zamale hote raṇa-śārdūla nṛpatī
Bhāvā-saṃge tejasvinī tī sabhā-gṛhī ālī
The Self-Choice venue filled up, what a crowd it was!
From every land, noble tigers of battle had assembled
With her brother, the radiant one reached the assembly
Hattīvarunī zaṇū çamakalī samūrta saudāminī
Sūta-putra an Karṇa rāhilā ubhā tvare uṭhunī
Hīna-kuḷīçā mhaṇūna tayālā saṃdhī naca didhalī
Off her elephant she flashed like personified lightning
And the sūta's son Karṇa quickly got up and stood
Of a low family, he was not given an opportunity
Ituke hote tarīhī Kṛṣṇā kuṇātarī nyāhāḷī
Brāhmaṇa-veṣe toça nirakhilā Arjuna nṛpa-maṇḍaḷī
Jīvā-śivāsama tyā doghāñcī dṛṣṭa-bheṭa zhālī
So much happened, and yet Kṛṣṇā gazed at someone
Spotted that very Arjuna in brāhmaṇa guise out of kings assembled
Like soulmates, those two met through their sights
Tyā nazarene sphurale bāhū, vīra siddha zhālā
Açūka lāvunī bāṇa tayāne matsya-bheda kelā
Dhanaṃjayācyā gaḷāṃ dhanya tī vara-mālā paḍalī
With that look, his arms swelled, the hero got ready
Aiming an unerring arrow, he broke the fish
Around Dhanaṃjaya's neck fell that lucky choice-garland

Syamala dandakam is a powerful sloka on Goddess syamala the giver of wisdom. This work was done by Sri Mahakavi kalidasa, an eminent Indian poet.
Though various stories were in circulation on the life and times of the famed Sanskrit scholar and poet Kalidas, the most prevalent among them was the one which says that he had served in the court of King Vikramadithya who ruled from Ujjain and after his death King Bhoja of Dhaara (present day Dhar in Madhya Pradesh) invited him to join his court where he wrote some of the great classics in Indian literature – ‘Meghasandesam’ and ‘Abhigjnana Sakunthalam’ to name a few, that had a great influence even on Western authors.
A sheppard without any basis in academics marrying a princess, turning into a great poet with the blessings of the Goddess, forgetting his past and finally reuniting with his wife. That is the story.
It is in Sanskrit--
