Unless it is not some kind of an unintentional mimicry of the original one with oodles of hamming and superficial acting with gimmicky expressions injected within, without understanding the psyche of the character and not going deep under the skin of it.

I agree, it shows the calibre of SRK as an actor, people think his stammer is a real life problem and many people who played villains were typecast to play similar roles but SRK went from a psychotic Rahul Mehra to heartthrob Raj Malhotra with ease

Also because he completely overshadowed the real “hero” of the movie. Sunny Deol. I keep forgetting that he was actually there in the movie 😆

Dilip JI was called the shehenshah of acting for a (very valid) reason.

I will highly recommend you to watch this small clip of Dilip Ji's dialogue from Devdas, and you will know what I am talking about here :)

You’re going to hate me for this but I watched the old version of Devdas and hated it with a passion. Old movies aren’t my thing coz the actors and actresses groaned and moaned too much with their quivering lips. I know Dilip is famous for his acting but I could never connect to him. All old movies were too OTT for me and the only actor I could justify the hype was Amitabh Bachan.

I’m a visual person so grandeur really works with me. I like the colours, beautiful outfits, grand sets, music, etc. Also Aishwarya and Madhuri looked beautiful and their Dola are Dola performance was the biggest treat, especially when you’re watching it at the cinemas.

The old version of Devdas didn’t make me cry. I just couldn’t connect to the characters. The ending was quite rushed with Paro running for like two seconds, bam hitting her head on the door and then movie was finished. 😆

The 2002 had prolonged the running scene, showing flashbacks of her childhood and panning to Devdas while he shed tears. Also the music that starts playing when Devdas finally notices her running to him gave me goosebumps. To top it all off since SLB wasn’t satisfied with my depression, he added the heartbreaking poem at the end and proceeded to bury my twitching body alive. 🥲

This was known from ages. Even before YRF's The Romantics.

It is known from 90s through magazines and articles how it was SRK's idea to add Kkkkiran to made character look a bit psychotic in his obsession and give him a quirk that distinguishes him.

It clicked and became a rage.

SRK has shared it in older interviews too and if I am not mistaken, one of Chopras, either Yash or Aditya, had also spoken about it and praised SRK for making Darr famous.

I am not an SRK fan but still know this.

How can you, being an SRK fan, not know this?

Anyway, honestly Darr is first time I noticed SRK as a kid and for a long time I hated SRK and was afraid of him because first SRK films I had seen, were Anjaam, Darr, Baazigar in which he brutally kills or tortures women. So I was afraid for heroines whenever I saw them with this creep.

It took me a long time to get image of those films out of my mind. I had otherwise even avoided to see DTPH, Pardes, DDLJ, KKHH due to my hate for SRK and fear of gory treatment of girls in his films, at his hands.

My idea or image of SRK changed later, that he is not a woman beater or killing and torturing women in each film.

Though his stalking and obsessive streak in characters has remained sort of consistent, with a dash of misogyny and some sort of orthodoxy.

The old Devdas was too regressive and orthodox for me in terms of dialogues. SLB tried to make his Devdas a bit progressive and his Paro and Chandramukhi were very fiesty, fiery.

However strictly in terms of acting, I rate Dilip saab, Suchitra Sen, Vyjantimala ahead of SRK, Ash and MD. Dilip is outstanding in tragedy. SRK's Devdas seemed more angry than sad or depressed or bitter. Dilip one was closer to the tragic or sad part and more subtle.

And Ash may be the most beautiful but Suchitra Sen is top notch as an actress and incomparable in sad or tragic scenes. She has ability to convey intense emotions without saying a word. Her sad eyes are enough. She had used that ability in Aandhi also, very well.

Vyjantimala, IMO, was a better classical dancer than MD and also her Chandramukhi was more subtle and classy.

I understand old Devdas has no glamour or awesome sets like new one. But in terms of being true to original novel, older films are better and same goes for acting, which I feel, needs to be more toned down and subtle in a tragedy.

But I am biased in favour of SLB one for trying to add progressive lines and holding mirror to hypocrisy of society.

Old one is too damn regressive for me. I mean I hated it when Paro said Swami kise kehte hain tumhe pata hi nahi. Yuck! WTF is Swami? I am happy SLB changed it to Pati kise kehte hain tumhe pata hi nahi in new one and junked words like swami, pati parmeshwar crap.

Kirron was the WORST part of Devdas and total ham. She looked like a possessed, madwoman in this song.

She acted very poorly.

So did other OTT women like Smita Jayakar and the lady who played Devdas's bhabhi in the film.

They put Ekta serials to shame in overacting.

What I said...it's fascinating!

My impressions are a mix of yours, FF, and yours, atominis.

I found the adaptation of the novel closer to the novel in the black&white Devdas with a fitting toned down acting...but, I could not connect to the movie internally... I liked it but I didn't feel with the characters even though I watched Dilip's Devdas before Bhansali's one (on purpose and after having read the novel).

There was a lot, I liked in the 2002 Devdas, among others, what FF and atominis liked.

And much later (2009), I watched Dev D.

SRK added the stammer also to make Rahul not only a creep, but a vulnerable, disturbed person...a more emotionally than mentally disturbed one.

That was also the reason why his performance scored over Sunny's one as he grabbed (alone & together with Juhi) the emotions of the audience (whatever these emotions were). Sunny was far too hero-hero to be a match to this impressive antagonist.

Gosh Sunny looked like a joke in that film. SRK totally stole the show!
