What's behind global rise of Rajamouli?

In past I think only K. Balachander, Mani Ratnam, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, S. Shankar, Priyadarshan types have managed to go beyond South and make it in North.

There may have been more. Especially in those Sri and Jeetu starrer remakes.

But otherwise there are few names from South who made it across India or across borders.

How come SS Rajamouli has made it so far and so spectacularly in especially last decade? There is no looking back for him since Magadheera and he mostly makes larger than life kind of visual spectacle of cinema.

I am less aware of Telugu industry.

So asking people here, what is back story of Rajamouli? How did he rise so much and how come he makes such big budget films and works with biggest stars and managed to win over North Indian audience and also audience abroad?

How come he reached where most Bollywood biggies also fail to reach?

I think his biggest success was to make Bahubali series pan India phenomenon without a single North Indian or Bollywood star and with entirely Southern star cast.

Bahubali series and Magadheera are still ridiculously popular on TV and even dubbed in Bhojpuri and shown on TV now.

How did he crack the code and become so huge? What is behind his meteoric rise especially post 2010?

Somewhere in between he’s the best director and he’s lucky

How come he reached where most BW biggies also fail to reach? What kind of question is this? May be because he has two hidden fangs and the so called BW biggies do not.Seriously 😳

Btw, His RRR would’ve been just as successful without the 2 BW actors. Of the two Alia’s inclusion was strictly a favor to KJo.

I know that which is why I said it is amazing how he makes films successful pan India and globally without any Bollywoodiyas.

Hence asked how he managed to do what most so called regional filmmakers are hardly able to do.

Rajamouli is not just a film festival circuit guy or critically acclaimed. He legit gets commercial success and popularity.

Hence I asked how he manages to do it.

Especially since 2010 there has been no looking back for him.

And he has proven there is no such thing as regional film or regional cinema. He kicks butt of Bollywood every few years.

Never seen his movies - couldn't watch Bahubali for more than a minute - never followed his career but that won't stop me from pontificating

Guessing the timing was right for him, audience craving larger than life entertaining movies and he provided it for them when others failed and BW was churning out boring movies that took themselves way too seriously

American audiences were craving manly action films which RRR provided unabashedly and HW failed (Rajamouli himself mentioned it, unable to find that IV right now)

The huge success success of latest Top Gun movie, when all other movies were failing miserably at theaters is case in point - it had no preaching, no political correctnes, only pure action man

I am not really sure where all these threads about RRR are going. But as someone with little to no interest in South Indian cinema, I had first heard of RRR when Magadheera was released. And then by the time Eega came out, I think a lot more people were interested in Rajamouli's work. He is clearly not some overnight breakout. It's sustained growth of what is a very well thought out career.

Bw biggies are benchmark for no talent . Bw is over rated n over hyped .

Bahubali is master piece . Bahubali deserves more appreciation n globe awards .

Watch eega , Rajamouli is talented film maker .

Rajamouli is very much involved in marketing his product. He does not delegate it to some outside team and stay away. Watch the CII interview with him, Mani Ratnam and Sukumar the director of Pushpa. In Mani Ratnam's words an amateur can can learn how to make a movie all by yourselves. But he/she has to learn how to sell his/her art. And that's a learned skill. Sukumar explains how Rajamouli gave him tips to promote Pushpa all over India.
