It’s a masterpiece. Everything about it is heart wrenching and tragic and so alluring at the same time. Just like Bulbul Anvita has done it again. This one is a completely different direction and story but raises similar questions like bulbul did about gender inequality, mental health and the struggles of a woman in seek of validation in the entertainment industry and from her mother. Everything is portrayed very effectively and tied together beautifully, that where great writing comes into play along with perfect direction and gorgeous cinematography ( some of the shots are to die for) I love Anvita’s aesthetics they’re understated yet never go unnoticed. And a special mention to Amit Trivedi he is favourite for a reason, the music is the best that l’ve heard from this year. Reminds you of the classic golden era of Bollywood.

Lastly Tripti deserves the world! This girl is too talented the way she sincerely portrays the pain, rejection and mental conflict is truly commendable also Babil Khan is very impressive in his debut, he definitely inherited his father’s acting genes my heart went out to him so so good.

It’s a must watch guys 5/5 from me it’s rare to see a movie this flawless.

Every frame looks so beautiful. Music is melodious.

Tripti Dimri is brilliant. Babil Khan reminded me of Irrfan Khan. The boy is here to stay. Irrfan would have been proud of him.

Story could have been told in a better way though.

Why isn't Tripti being cast in big films?

Hope some Telugu movie makers saw this film and cast Tripti in some of their movies.

The movie was certainly an immersive experience, but the staginess of it detracted from the impact. Each scene was really beautiful like a painting. While some scenes warranted it (like the introduction scene of Babil Khan's character, Jagan- you will know when you watch the film), it wasn't necessary to set each and every scene like an artpiece.

The music was toh....Bhaisaab. Need to listen to the album once more as a manna to the soul.

Looking forward to a discussion of some of the themes/motifs in the movie.

1. The moth motif on Qala's sarees, the slate color of her sarees/dresses (a callback to Bulbull as well maybe?)

2. The mercury/maze metaphor

3. Snow pervading Qala's world and even her awards in her hallucination?

4. Qala handing out milk to Jagan and what it symbolizes

5. The "twin" aspect of Qala/Jagan and their similar fates as depicted in the movie

6. The telephone? as a symbol of the tempestuous bond between mother and daughter

7. Of mothers and daughters, and Qala seeing her secretary and Naseeban Aapa as a mother figure? Qala's mom clad in black and Sudha, her secretary, in white throughout the movie- "good" and "bad" mothers?

8. Qala also lending a helping hand to women everywhere (having a woman as her secretary, encouraging that woman photographer, etc,.) unlike her mother who discouraged her.

I am yet to read a single bad review of this film. Rave reviews coming from all quarters. And huge amounts of praise for Tripti. Might actually give this one a go.

The thread title says "& discussions", so I think yes as one can't discuss a movie without giving away something of the movie's content.

Qala

Qala unfolds like a slow burn. It is like holding a thread that is slowly unraveling, just like the characters we see on screen.

Anvita Dutt is a master of atmosphere. Her sets and backdrops add to the character of each frame. The snow-clad bleakness of the remote Himachal landscape. The sweeping emptiness of the mansion mother and daughter reside in. The quiet hustle of the Calcutta movie industry.

I particularly appreciate how Anvita changes the atmosphere as the mental state of Qala changes. There's that scene in Calcutta when Qala first embarks on her singing journey. When it begins, the sky unfolds bright and vast like Qala's potential ahead. But by the time it ends, it is cloudy, overcast, and bleak as Qala reckons with the sacrifices demanded of her.

Tripti Dimri is a revelation. Bulbbul and Qala are such starkly different characters. Both characters are dealt an unfair hand. Bulbbul boldly learned to play the game and exuded the confidence of a woman determined to master her fate. Qala, on the other hand, is naive and innocent. No matter how hard she tries to play the game, it consumes her. We need more Tripti Dimri content - damn, she's so talented.

I must confess, though, while technically sound - I don't think Qala is as captivating as Bulbbul. It is a bit too slow and hard to get hold of. The metaphors in Qala are also more obscure.
