What let down, they pretty much are the jury, judge and executioner of the whole thing with US looking the other way just because their behind is stuck in their hands. What happened to Afghanistan shows how the world is so screwed up and how US has the biggest hand in bringing the world to this point. :(
Right. Afghanistan was mostly populated by peaceful tribes peacefully engaged in killing each other and peacefully stoning women who dared show their faces before the U.S. came into the picture. Also, peacefully destroying history so the existence of other cultures and religions would be erased from people's memories.
The U.S. has its faults (the policy of interfering in other countries' politics which went on through the 70s and 80s), but the rest of the world ain't the innocent victim it likes to play. Not even close. In fact, it's usually historically ignorant Westerners (and I include those of all races) who like to imagine the planet living in some prehistoric pastoral scene before the Americans came in.
AND when things go wrong, the call immediately goes out for the U.S. to spend its blood and money to run to the rescue. Why is the world ignoring the carnage in Syria?! What happened to the little girls kidnapped by the Boko Haram?! Why is the world (read: the U.S.) silent?!
And yeah, 10-20 years down the line... we will come full circle. Blame the U.S. for problems as though they never existed before the Americans came in.

The world existed for millennia before Columbus sailed the ocean blue, before the U.S. declaration of independence. The U.S. was mostly minding its own business until the world wars. Even in those, American had to be dragged in kicked and screaming. U.S. dominance started after 1945. But there was the Soviet Union around until 1989. The last 32 years is all the U.S. had as the sole superpower. Some of these countries/tribes/ethnicities have been fighting over something or the other since Stone Age. But apparently, the U.S. is mostly to blame for all this.
