Chapter 1.

'Mahek...woh table no. 4 ki order le le....'

'Mahek...paneer makhni aur banana padega...jaldi kar..'

'Mahek...woh table 2 ka kitna paisa hua?'

'Jaldi jaldi haath chala Mahek...customer ko wait nahi karate...'

Thirteen year old Mahek ran around her father's dhaba fulfilling all the demands. She was a tall, skinny girl with a mop of silky dark hair tied in a ponytail . Her merry eyes danced and whirled as she quickly calculated the payments, took the new orders and rushed to the kitchen to start cooking.

She loved to work here. This was her playground, her home. The divine aromas of food, the buzz of the kitchen and customers, and the different people she got to see every day...this was what she loved. Who needed to go to school when she had all that she craved for right here and now? Schools were boring. She had attended a school regularly until she was elevan. Then her father's asthama started worsening. She had found herself increasingly spending her time at the dhaba until one day, when the head-teacher had asked her father to home-school her.

Mahek had just shrugged. 'Good riddance...', she thought. She hated school anyway. Sitting at one place for hours, listening to the teacher droning and working out weird maths puzzles was not her cup of tea.

In the evening her father counted the takings for the day. Mahek finished clearing up and both closed down finally to go home.

Susheel Sharma was tired. His asthama was playing up again. Sitting at the till of his dhaba all day, he had to inhale the fumes of the kitchen and the pollution from the road outside. He would rather have liked to work somewhere else...but had no choice. This was his family business. He looked at his teenage daughter who was dozing beside him. She had worked all day without any rest, only stopping to have a bite of lunch in the afternoon. A sheen of perspiration covered her face. She looked so innocent...his heart filled with pity. She didn't even know she was carrying her whole family on her young shoulders. Without her, they would be starving out on the road.

It was late night when they reached home. The family was already asleep. Mahek somehow changed out of her grimy clothes and crawled into the bed next to her Nehal Di. Di smelt nice...like she always did. Closing her eyes she inhaled the heady scent and fell asleep instantly.

Next morning, Nehal was up early. It was a big day today...it was her little sister's foruteenth birthday. Nehal and Mohit were in the kitchen, trying to bake a cake for their sister. But they were not doing a very good job of it. The batter was tasteless and too watery. Ten year old Mohit was looking at his big sister hopefully, wishing her to be the eldest sister for once and fix the cake batter. But Nehal just stood there, covered in flour, staring at it. She hated cooking. In fact she hated any kind of work. She wished they could afford a ready-made-cake. For the tenth time that day, she cursed their poverty, before abandoning the cake and leaving in a huff to take a shower. To hell with the cake..Mahek will sort it out herself...

Mahek woke up that morning to a loud chorus of happy birth day... Her whole family were around her bed, hugging and kissing her. Fourteen...they said...she was a big girl now.

She received a birthday present - a beautiful sleeveless dress with butterflies on it. It must be Di's choice...Mahek thought. Di loved such frilly things.

She got ready, put on the new dress and fixed her birthday cake. They all sang happy birthday again as she cut the cake and fed them.

The party soon finished and it was time for her to leave for the dhaba.

It was a busy day for Mahek as she worked, cooking, cleaning and serving customers. But It was not her usual day, something was different around her. She could feel the eyes of people on her, assessing her, gauging her. She felt weird. Some of them had tried to keep talking to her when she took orders. Some had tried to touch her bare arms and smiled. Some regulars were extra courteous today and some just kept staring. She was uneasy.

In the evening, Ratan chacha came to their dhaba with a birthday gift for her. He was her father's childhood friend. His son Ajay was with him.

Mahek ran inside to get Ratan chacha a piece of the cake she had baked in the morning and saved for him. She was in the kitchen when she heard someone behind her. She turned to see Ajay standing in the kitchen doorway. They were alone.

She looked at him questionningly. 'Do you need anything?', she asked.

He didn't reply. He moved slowly towards her and stopped right in front of her, too close for her comfort.

She took a step back. She felt a weird dread inside her as she looked at him. His eyes had a hungry glint. She was about to speak when he grabbed her tightly. He pushed her behind until she was against the wall and pressed his weight on her. Mahek's heart shot to her mouth. She struggled to push him away, her strength no match for his. Her eyes welled with tears. She was about to scream when there was a call from outside. Ajay reluctantly let go of her and left trying to adjust his expression. Mahek stood there, shaking with fear, staring at his back, tears rolling down her cheeks.

That night she did not sleep. She was bone tired from her day's work, but too disturbed to fall asleep. She kept thinking about the day, how and why it had turned the way it did. Her mind could hardly believe what had happened. She felt her bare arms...they were soft with dewy skin. She stood in front of the mirror and looked carefully. She saw a beautiful girl of fourteen, her skinny body slowly developing womanly curves...she could not believe it.

No...It was Nehal Di who was the beautiful sister, she wore those girly clothes and received attention of every young man in the neighbourhood. Not her...she could not afford to look pretty...not when she had to work in the dhaba. No..she had to make sure she was the ugly duckling, the plain old Mahek...to ensure she was safe.

She looked at the new dress that was hanging on nearby rail. She took it and stuffed it right to the back of her cupboard, at the bottom of the pile of other clothes. She was never going to put on that frilly dress again.

Chapter 2.

Seven years later...

Susheel Sharma sat happily at the till of his dhaba. He was not bothered with fumes anymore. His daughter had made rennovations, extended what was a small establishment seven years ago to a much bigger place. It was now almost thrice its original size, with the kitchen located in the back and the front made more attractive and cozy. They could now sit more than a hundred people at a time. She had worked tirelessly to turn their humble dhaba into a good sized restaurant, not only catering to the usual clientelle, but attracting people from other parts of the city. Her food had got better, something she had learned from her mother and then the internet. They now employed more waiters, a separate cleaner and two cooking staffs. Susheel looked around, his heart swelling with pride and love for his daughter. He was a lucky to have her.

*****

Mahek parked her pickup truck near her dhaba and got out. She went to the back and unloaded the crates of fresh produce with the help of Mohit. She looked happily at the fresh vegetables she was able to get directly from the farmers, saving her good money. She carried the crates to the storage room near the kitchen and loaded them into the large fridge she had installed few years back. Making mental notes of the contents of the fridge, she decided when she would need to buy more next. Coming out, she went to her father to check on his health and inspect the accounts for the day.

Susheel watched her as she poured over the accounts book, frowning in concentration. Her old, baggy jeans was frayed, her oversized shirt made her look frumpy and shapeless. Her thick, long hair were in a tight plait, hardly a single hair out of place. He did not understand why she insisted on wearing these clothes when they could now afford to buy good clothes. His other two children had no qualms about spending money on clothes and other fripperies. But not Mahek. He sighed.

Satisfied with the contents of the book, Mahek handed it back to her father and smiled. Her dhaba was doing well. They were making good profit. At this rate, they could extend it bit more and hire more people in another year. She was also putting some money aside for Nehal Di's wedding as her Ma had asked. It wasn't much yet, but it will build into a sizable amount in a year or two. Then there was Mohit as well. Mahek became thoughtful. He was doing his last year of graduation and also helping her at the dhaba. He was interested in the business but was quite impulsive at times. He had already had arguments with some tricky regulars and suppliers. She made a mental note of keeping him otherwise occupied, so he won't have to interact with people too much.

She came out to find more people passing by her dhaba towards the land behind. This was a new development, something was going on. The Sharmas owned five acres of the land adjacent to the road, only part of it contained the dhaba. The rest of the land was full of bushes and brambles. Behind it was a vast farmland, and something was happening on that farmland. For the past few days, there were workers clearing the land, levelling it as if in preparation of some building work. She decided to find out what was happening.

*****

She did not have to do anything. The next morning, as she was overseeing the kitchen, she saw two people in dark suits entering her dhaba. They walked in and asked for the owner.

Susheel sat them at a table as Mahek walked towards them. They ignored her and spoke directly to her father. They were lawyers. They asked if he would like to sell this dhaba and his land. The vast land behind it was bought by some tycoon and he was going to build a lavish resort there, complete with every imaginable amenity, catering to rich people from India and abroad. He had already aquired hundreds of acres of land right upto and including the river few miles away. The only thing remained was the approach road to the resort, which will go through their land. They were willing to offer good price, so much money that Susheel's eyes popped out.

"No", came a stern voice.

The two people turned to look at the source of the voice, irritated at being interrupted in the middle of their offer. They only wanted to speak to the owner, they said. Not to some chit of a girl.

Susheel looked at his daughter. 'Mahek beta...this seems to be a good offer..we can buy something else in better part of the city...let's at least consider it.'

'No..', she said again and left from there as if the discussion was over.

Susheel looked at the lawyers helplessly and shrugged his shoulders. He could do no more.

The two people left from there annoyed, their plans thus thwarted by the abrupt girl. They were worried now to face their boss. He was not going to be happy.
