By playing a transgender ghost in Laxmmi Bomb, Akshay Kumar seems to be clearly trying to win over an audience that so far Bollywood has neglected.

Sources say the transgender activist Laxmi Narayan Tripathy tweeting her appreciation of the trailer was no coincidence. That her participation was indeed solicited in making Akshay’s transgender transformation not just entertainment, but rather a movement towards an acceptance of the Third Sex in the mainstream.

Indeed, Akshay playing a transgender character could be the beginning of a new phase in the acceptance of the third sex in mainstream cinema.

Says filmmaker Onir, “More roles need to be written in mainstream Hindi cinema for the LGBT community. And they should be played by members of the LGBT community.”

If he's trying to woo the transgender community, he should've taken a real transgender for the role of Sharad Kelkar. I've no problem with Sharad as an actor, but a man playing a trans is the same as a man playing a woman in old movies of Dada Saheb Phalke era.

Akshay is not playing transgender.

Unless they make changes in the story, the story is he is playing a person whose body is taken over by the spirit of a death transwoman, who takes over his body to exact revenge over people who killed her and her dear ones.

But yes there will be scenes where Akki's character under the influence of the spirit who will be dressed in saree, and so on.

And yes Kanchana had representation of the transwoman of India, the kinnar community.

The kinnar in the movie will be shown as a hard working person who works hard to fulfill the dreams of another kinnar, who wants to be doctor. But is killed by villains for land dispute.

It was a typical cheesy 90s like drama filled with comedy and action with some cringe moments, and is basically a pop corn flick which needs people not to look for logic.

And lets not forget it was Lawarence the original director and lead actor, who is remaking his own stuff, so basically there will not be any difference in the treatment, so if you are okay with the cringey and cheesy stuff of 90s, watch the movie, if you are not, dont watch it. Simple.

This is a little bit confusing ... Isn’t transgender different from the third sex?

Yes they can be different, but it was implied in the film that the character was an intersex along with being a transgender.

People often confuse between the two and consider them the same, because kinnar is an umbrella term used for both.

I find it frustrating that people don't know the difference between transgender and intersex.

Transgender= People who are born male but have the mannerisms of a female, OR people who are born female but have mannerisms and the soul of a male.

Intesex= People who are born with both sexual organs of male and female. The THIRD GENDER.

Transmen or transwomen have nothing to do with 'kinnars'. Kinnars are intersex people. Transwomen are women who were originally born in a male body, the opposite goes for transmen.

Maaf kardo meri maa, I don't have extensive knowledge of the trans or intersex community. But whatever is the politically correct term, in Muni2, Kanchana was addressed as Kinnar.
