Chapter 2

“And who is the next patient? And why wasn’t I informed about this one? You know at the moment patients aren’t mine to deal with. I need to know who I am dealing with!”, Dr Chopra whined.

The nurse was nervous around Rahul as he was cranky all the time. I chuckled and followed him into his cabin.

Being a doctor was tough but being a specialist in certain field of course put a lot of pressure on us and thus half the time I and Rahul tagged together.

“Where is the file?”, I asked the nurse and suggested,” please understand the protocols of the hospital and understand that we need our patients file on the table right before our shift starts.”

“And the reason why I always tell you why didn’t we meet before my marriage to Ashi.”, Rahul said just like always.

And like always I replied, “if it weren’t for her being your wife, I wouldn’t have met you”.

And he laughed,” oh I love her.” And I smiled because love like the two of them was a blessing and I was never loved as being a businessman’s daughter you always come last. And this is why I loved being at the hospital. These people were my family. I loved them and my patients were someone who needed me to be there and not go away. I still remember the time being a child when my brother died in front of me because dad was having one of his day and I was in the ICU for 5 whole months when he wished I didn’t live. But I lived and told the police every single thing but dad being dad, he was saved.

I have always wondered if I would be able to trust anyone but till date, I am wary of everyone around me. I don’t know what I would be doing with my life if Rahul wouldn’t have been a part of it. He understood me and his wife was total love. She was a wedding planner and always joyful and complimented Rahul’s grumpiness always and they made me feel loved. So, they were my family and thus why I spent more time with them than I did with my family.

The nurse eyed him nervously and fiddled with the files before she found what we were asking for.

She gave me the file and I began scanning it.

I hummed and murmured, “Its stage 3”.

“The patient is here.”, the nurse announced and stood aside to let the patients enter.

There stood a man around Rahul’s age with broad shoulders, 5 o’clock shadow and eyes so dark. I understood what those eyes said and that was darkness, soulless eyes, that hollow look that I used to see in mirror every day before I met Ashi and Rahul. He brought a woman inside the room and helped her in a seat before us.

“Namaste.”, she greeted.

Rahul greeted her because he saw what I saw and it was helplessness that we felt when a patient life was withering away before us.

“So, can we come to the point? What is it that we can do to help her? She is becoming more fragile and the last chemo therapy didn’t work the way it should have. And the doctor that previously handled her said you are the last hope we have.”, the tall, dark and handsome guy said. Well not a guy because he was a man.

“Please save her. She is the only one in my life without whom I can’t live without.”

I again checked her file to complete my study before I said something. Rahul told the Mr. Raizada to wait. I didn’t know his first name yet as he hasn’t introduced himself yet.

“Please excuse us for 5 minutes,” I said and moved out of the cabin and Rahul followed.

“And?”, Rahul asked.

“The condition is serious, way too serious but it can be cured and it has only been tested on few patients but they were positive,” I said.

“So, we can save her right? But the chemo you’re talking about is expensive and that’s why you pulled me out!”, Rahul replied.

“YUP!”, I said.

“Well someone’s got to tell them that it is possible to cure it! And we have to help her. Did you see how much he loved that woman.” Rahul told me.

We entered the cabin and took our seats while the family was discussing. But it halted once we were seated.

“So? Any chance that she could be cured?”, Mr. Raizada questioned.

Rahul looked at me and I proceeded to tell them all the procedure that Mrs. Raizada will be facing for the next 6 months.

“But it will work right?”, Mr. Raizada asked right when I said that,” the price for the treatment is…”.

“I don’t care what the price is. I can easily afford it. What I can’t afford is for this woman to die!!” he told us.

“All right then! We can start this procedure as soon as you fill in the details at the reception and the payments are handled.”, Rahul said.

“Thank you so much! I am sorry for his behavior but he loves me so much that he cant see me die. And I want to live to see my grandkids so you have to help me live. I believe you.”, she smiled at us and then her grandson lovingly.

“That’s perfect! Thank you doctors! I will go and fill in the forms and as its Saturday so we can start the procedure on Monday if it’s possible.”, Mr. Raizada suggested.

We both nodded at him and bid a bye and went to ER to treat the patients. But my mind was on that man. What was it about him that called his soul to mine? Only I didn’t have any answer to that question.

“What should I say to Maan?”, I thought to myself, “that his father wants me gone from his life because he wants Maan to marry someone else because of money.”

I just cried and stared at him because I couldn’t answer him. I turned and ran away before saying,” just remember that I always loved you and I always will.”

“Then why?”, he crumbled right in front of me and cried out loud asking why again and again. But I couldn’t reply him because if I said then my baby… I hugged my midsection and closed my eyes and thought that,” you’re loved baby! By both your papa and your mom.”

And I went away but was stopped by a hand on my elbow,” please tell me this is all a joke? Please! We are marrying and you’re kidding right! You know I would do anything for you! Please just say that this is a lie and we are marrying,” he sobbed at the last word.

But I couldn’t look at him because I couldn’t meet his eyes and lie.

“Look love doesn’t work. Money does and I am going away with the man whose child I am carrying and he has a whole lot of it and way more than what you have? And you know what he owns several businesses unlike you who depends on his father for money because even if you own business but his income keeps you afloat.”, I said cruelly and watched his face settle in shock and his face setting in hard stone and I knew my work was done. But what I didn’t knew was that I was in a web. Only time would tell if I would be able to get free from that or I will die.

But right now, was my priority to save my child and for that I would do anything.

Interesting story would love to read more all characters are battling with their inner demons.

She should tell Maan the truth and let him decide for himself. Hiding things is never the right path.
