Chapter 9

Arjun simply said “My laptop and mobile were facing difficulties getting signal. I took Shree’s help to solve the problem.” Shyam nodded and came towards them with the tea saying “Rani Sahiba ne aapke aur Lavanyaji ke liye chai bheja hai.” Arjun smoothly took the tea tray from Shyam and said “Lavanya so rahi hai. Usse uthane mujhe thik nahi lagta. I think hume niche jana chahiye. Lavanya baad me chai pee legi.” Shyam nodded his head and turned to go back downstairs but not before giving a glance from the door. Arjun’s hand tightened on the tea tray handle as he saw something dark in that glance. Something primal rose within urging him to protect his wife. Giving the tray to Shree, he said “you go down, see how Shyam is behaving with everyone. I will sit in the room.” Before Shree could protest anything, Arjun took the tea cup from the tray, stepped inside the room and shut the door on Shree’s face. Shree grumbles “Shaadi ho ya na ho, yeh khadoos toh khadoos hi rahega.”

Arjun silently opens the laptop and glances at Riya, seeing her in a deep sleep. He smiles seeing her pouting expression and clutching her hands. She is also mumbling something, yet he did not want to risk waking her up by going near her. Suddenly Riya said “Deep.” Arjun freezes hearing her call out the name. Turning he sees Riya in deep sleep. But now her expression does not show pouting. Her brows her furrowed,her hands are clutched in tight fists. She goes back to mumbling. Then Arjun notices two tears come from her eyes. Suddenly Riya starts moving restlessly in the bed. Arjun gets up and moves to the bedside, and putting his hands on Riya’s shoulders he tries to wake her up. Feeling, Arjun’s hands on her shoulders, Riya grows agitated and starts struggling against his grip. Arjun wanted to call out her name, but couldn’t, so he tried to hold her. But Riya continued to struggle. Suddenly, an idea struck Arjun.

Pulling her to his body, he wraps his arms around, holding her tightly to himself. He whispers in her ear “Shhhh, Riya you are safe. I have got you. I am not going to let anything happen to you. Its just a nightmare. Just a nightmare.” Riya continues struggling his grip but his tight hold on her does not loosen. Her head is positioned on his heart, and Arjun could slowly feel her struggle lessen as she listens to his heartbeat. Her agitation slowly lessens, and Arjun looks down to see her expression slowly becoming clear. Her breaths which had increased in her agitation gradually began to even out showing her descent back to sleep. As Arjun relaxes feeling her agitation lessen, he stiffens as he hears her say “How could you do this to me Papa? How could you sell me?”. And he felt two tears wet his shirt. Looking down, he sees her completely gone back to sleep.

Shree sips his tea and continues grumbling in his mind about Arjun Sir. He is a technical specialist, not a goddamn people observer. Everyone is having the tea, calmness present in the air yet even Shree could see the calmness is fragile like a glass waiting to break. Anjali enters with Khushi following her bringing bhajiya and other snacks. Stepping aside, Anjali let Khushi set the tray on the table. Shree got the brief sign of lust present on Shyam’s face on seeing Khushi bent down allowing her dupatta to expose a little of her neck. Arnav also noticed and Shree could feel the waves of anger roll of him. Looking at Arnav, Khushi’s brow furrowed noticing his anger. Arnav patted the seat beside him and Khushi taking her tea sat next to him. Anjali sat beside Shyam, and Shree started observing how Shyam lovingly caresses the pregnancy bump, showing no signs of indication of having even looked at Khushi. If Shree, hadn’t seen the expression, even he wouldn’t have believed that Shyam was capable of thinking about someone else let alone lust after someone. Shree then understood that not only is Shyam a master manipulator, but the way his honeyed words sound, it looks like he may have also had some training in how to manipulate. But yet,there is nothing to indicate that Shyam was capable of putting those bodies in those sheds. Maybe instead of Shyam is aware of only one aspect of the operation going on which is supplying girls.

Shree’s thoughts broke when Anjali said “Shreekantji, Lavanyaji uth gayi hogi kya?”. Looking at the time,Shree saw that there may still be sometime before she wakes up. Mamiji looks at him suspiciously and said “Hello, Hi, Bye, Bye, Shreekant bitwa ek baat humari samajh me na aava ge, zara samjhayenge ka?”. Shree wrinkles his nose a little on not be able to understand everything that Mami said but nods his head. Mami said “Tumhari Jijaji ko tum humesha yeh Arjun Sir, Arjun Sir kahe bulate rehate ho? Woh toh tumhari behen se shaadi karat rahe na?”. Shree’s mind stops and he scrambles to find an answer to the question. Looking at all of their questioning glances, Shree finally said “Woh kyunki, Arjun Sir mere boss bhi hai na. Toh abhi abhi shaadi hui na Lavanya aur Arjun Sir ki, toh Jijaji bulane me todha time lag raha hai isliye.” Mami looks on with suspicion as everyone nods their head. Mami then asked “Ye batao bitwa, Lavanya itni modern aur hasmuk aur Arjun bitwa itna gussewala aur sanata, dono ne shaadi tak kaise pahunche? Tell me why? What is the story?”.

Nani said “Ha Shreekant bitwa,agar hum Lavanya ya Arjun bitwa se puchenge toh woh hume nahi batayenge. Tumhi batao , in dono ka milna kaise hua?”. Anjali then continues “ Bate kaise hui? Pyaar kaise hua? Ahsaas kab hua? Izhaar kaise hua? Shaadi tak kaise pahunche?”.Shree said to himself “Ladayi se fursat mile toh pyaar ka ahsaas aur izhaar ho payega?”. Shyam said “Aapne kuch kaha Shreekantji ?” Shree said “Nahi kuch nahi.Nani woh, Lavanya aur Arjun Sir ki pehli mulaqat gaadi se hua?”. Khushi gasps and said “Lavanyaji ne Arjunji ki gaadi se takrayi?”. Shree shook his head with a laugh and said without thinking “Nahi Lavanya ne Arjun Sir ko chor samajh liya tha aur unpaar dandha maarne ki koshish kiya tha.”

Everyone gasps “Kya.” Arnav hides a slight smirk seeing including Dadi, invested in the story. Shree becoming more invested in telling the story said “Aur Arjun, woh toh ek number ka khadoos tha uss waqt bhi Nani, bilkul Lavanya ka sorry accept nahi kiya aur uska favourite hair clip usse wapas nahi diya. Bechari Lavanya, baar baar apna clip ke liye maangti aur Arjun Sir khadoos ho kar clip wapas nahi deta tha.” Khushi leans forward and said “Phir kya hua?”. Shree said “Phir kya, pata nahi kya deal dono ke beech me hui, par Lavanya phir Arjun Sir ke saath bahar jaane lagi, uske saath baate karne lagi aur ek din meri hi behen aake kehti hai ki mujhe aapke khadoos boss se pyaar ho gaya.” Then a voice asked "Phir?. Shree replies “Phir dono ne shaadi kar liya. Pata nahi mere uss khadoos boss ne meri uss bholi behen ko kaise pataya hoga.” Seeing everyone’s frightened expression, Shree turns back and gulps seeing Arjun standing behind him his arms folded and looking at him with a contemplative expression definitely of torture to Shree.

Chapter 10

Riya never remembered how long it has been since she had this sense of safety. She remembers her childhood, where her Ma used to stroke her hair as she slept in her lap and the swing’s gentle motion used to rock her back to sleep. That was the last memory she has of safety. And now this. Riya felt reluctance in opening her eyes, but she could sense that her time in sleep land is coming to an end and she has to come back to reality. Suddenly, she stiffens feeling her body pressed against someone else. Slowly opening her eyes, preparing herself to fight, she prepares herself for the worst. Her vision clears to reveal her hand clutching someone’s shirt.Her mind is unable to comprehend but her eyes widen when her mind finally reveals to her, whose shirt she has clutched. Her eyes go up to that opening in the shirt revealing a slight sight of the patch of hair, leaving the mysteries of the body unknown to the woman, the long neck which sometimes seems to expand to see everything, the lips which often holds silence yet sometimes reveals everything in it, the nose which often crinkles when in thought and finally her vision sees the eyes as they look back at her in concern and something unnamed in it. Riya immediately straightens up, and feels the pull of the strong arms surrounding her body.

Arjun could see the confusion in Riya’s eyes but no accusation or surprise which surprises him. When he felt her first stirring to wake up, he was tempted to remove himself from her arms but could not feel the will to do so. It was a long time, since he had felt the urge to hold someone as they wake up. Even with Roshni, often he never had the time to see her wake in his arms. Riya’s eyes meets his again and lowers and a slight colouring is seen across her face. Arjun has to hide a smirk and look serious as she looks up at him again. Riya asked “How? What?”. And finally the nightmare comes to Arjun’s mind. He could feel his body stiffen with anger, as he remembered her last spoken words. But he knew if he reveals the vulnerability now, Riya would clam up and maybe do something to avoid this. Suddenly an idea comes in Arjun’s mind and he knew it was wrong but he found no reason not to use it. He said “That, you fell asleep and after sometime, I was feeling a little tired. So, I thought to lie down on the sofa, but I heard footsteps come from outside. I had told Shree, that I could not go down because I was tired. I did not want anyone to get suspicious, so I went to lie down on the bed. I must have also fallen asleep, because when I woke up, we were like this. I hope that I did not make you uncomfortable.” It was a testament, to Riya’s medication that she was still drowsy enough not to realize that Arjun was asleep on the left side of the bed near where Riya was sleeping at the edge in a half way sitting position and not the right side of the bed, where there was more space.

Arjun shifted a little uncomfortable with the lie, but did not say anything else when Riya nodded her head and rubbed her eyes still drowsy. She looked cute, her hair all rumpled, looking at him with an adorable expression, her nose all wrinkled up in sleep, she making an adorable yawn and her eyes still drowsy. Arjun’s uncomfortableness now had a completely another reason and he knew if he did not want the reason to be known, he had to get up. Arjun stands from the bed and said to Riya “I will get Khushi.” Riya nods her head still sleepy.

Arjun comes down to hear the tail end of Shree’s words. He did not know what Shree said and judging from everyone’s expression around him, Shree must have painted a rather dramatic tale. Shree turns around seeing everyone’s expression and gulps seeing him. Arjun knew, he should not but he did not know how many times, Shree had come between him and Riya. However, now was not the time to torture him. He will make Shree stay up all night later. That’s always a good way for him to torture Shree. Knowing his thought process, will not be seen on his face, Arjun said “Khushi, Lavanya tumhe bula rahi thi. Freshen up hone me usse tumhari todhi madat chahiye.”

Khushi nods her head and gets up when Shyam said “Arre, lekin Arjunji, aap unke pati haina, toh pati ka toh farz hota patni ki madat karna toh kya aap apni biwi ke madat nahi karenge kya?”.Arjun’s cold expression made Shyam gulp and a shiver pass through him. Everyone avoided Arjun’s eyes not wanting to see the coldness present in it. Arjun said “Pati ka dharm bhi hota ki woh apni patni ko kabhi dard na pahunchaiye. Kyunki jab patni ko dard hota hai, toh pati ko bhi utna hi dard hota hai aur usse zyada bhi kyunki woh apni patni ko uss dard me madat karne ki kabiliyat nahi rakhta. Aur agar apko itna hi janena ka shauk hai Mr Jha, ki mai Khushi ke madat kyu leraha hu, toh mai apko batata hu ki mujhe baal banane nahi aate. Jab baal karne ki koshish karta hu, toh Riya ko todha dard hota hai. Aur mai nahi chahta ki mai apni patni ko kabhi koi dard de du. Isliye, madad maang raha hu. Samjhe yaSamjhau?”.

Shyam hurriedly nods his head,and Khushi goes up while Arjun goes to the kitchen. Shree looks confused on whom to follow when Arjun said “Shree.” Shree hurriedly follows Arjun to the kitchen. Arjun takes out an apple and washes it thoroughly. Giving it to Shree, he said “Cut it into pieces.” Opening the fridge, Arjun then takes out milk.Turning, he hears a voice say “Haldi is in the right cupboard.” Turning, he nods to Arnav, and takes out the haldi. Boiling the milk, he makes Haldi milk as Shree silently cuts the apple to pieces while Arnav looks on. Arranging the milk, and apple pieces in the plate he puts it on the tray and carries it to the room, with Shree and Arnav following him. As they reach the room, laughter is heard from inside.

Opening the door, Arjun heaves a sigh of relief, as Riya and Khushi look at him with a grin. Riya said in a teasing voice “Arnav, I think Khushi would want a Switzerland scarf.” Arnav looks at Riya scandalized as Riya and Khushi interrupt with laughter.

Arjun sets the tray on the table and takes the milk glass, holding it in front of Riya. Riya looks at the milk with a wrinkled nose. She looks at Arjun with a pleading expression. He indicates to the milk. Riya looks at the milk again and shook her head. Arjun just takes her hands and puts it around the glass to hold it. He then folds his hands across the body, and looks at Riya with That expression. Seeing That expression around, Arjun’s face, Riya knew she had no choice but to drink the milk. Wrinkling her nose, she drinks the milk. Khushi, Arnav and Shree silently laugh seeing this silent interaction. Arjun then holds the plate of apple pieces and Riya takes one and eats it with a wrinkled expression.

Suddenly, a sound of phone ringing interrupts the easy atmosphere. Arjun seeing whose phone call it is becomes serious. Taking the phone call, he silently listens to what the person is saying and nods accordingly to what the person said. Arjun finally said “Okay bye” and cuts the call. Looking at all of them who had waited for his conversation to end in silence, he said “We established a link between Shyam and those girl’s disappearances.”
