Rating : 3/5
We went to watch the much awaited
Fanney Khan which stars Anil Kapoorm
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Rajkummar Rao,
Divya Dutta in lead roles and introduces
the new girl on the block, Pihu Sand and is
directed by Atul Manjrekar. The movie talks
about the sensitive issue of body-
shamming and beautifully explains how
important it is to dream for what you want
to do in life despite the countless
roadblocks in a dramatic way. It also talks
about how you can achieve things in life
without succumbing to the pressure or by
lowering down your moral levels if you
have the belief in your talent.
Prashant Sharma (Anil Kapoor) works day
and night in a factory to sustain his
livelihood and his aim in life is to see her
daughter Lata (Pihu Sand) record her own
label and shine in her singing career
which still hasn't started. He plays a man
who will go any length to make his
daughter's dream come true no matter
what. Her daughter, Lata is an obese girl
who gets picked upon despite her credible
singing talent thanks to the judgmental
society and the mocking people we live
amidst. She dreams and aspires to become
like Baby Singh (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan),
who happens to be the number 1 singer
of the country and is a true rock-star.
Coming back to Prashant, his dream of
becoming a singer never worked for him
and he henceforth, wants his daughter to
do what he wasn't able to. His alter ego,
Fanney Khan worships Mohammad Rafi
and Kishore Kumar while he continues
making new tunes in his solace.
Rajkummar Rao And Aishwarya Rai
Bachchan In A Still From Fanney Khan
Prashant's junior in the factory, Adhir
(Rajkummar Rao), who is also the Jaan of
the film, is a guy who is simple, naive,
funny and gullible all at the same time. His
character is extremely likable and with his
terrific acting talents, you would want him
to kidnap you any day. His chemistry with
Baby is lit and evokes laughter as well but
a lot more could be done in the sense of
playing with these two characters which is
seriously missing in the film as they really
had a lot of potential. Kavita, Prashant's
realist wife, played by Divya Dutta supports
her dreamer husband but also maintains
the stability between the practicalities and
the opportunities in her daughter's and
husband's life. She has played her part
with a lot of conviction.
Coming to Pihu, who plays the role of Lata,
has been bashed by the audience and the
judges at various singing shows on the
basis of her appearance has done a very
commendable job and has taken the
opportunity seriously. Her performance is
honest, credible and is very nuanced
despite being a debutante. She has
wonderfully emoted all forms of
expressions like anger, sadness, happiness
and has even lip-synced perfectly.
Overall, the two actors who shine in the
film throughout are Anil Kapoor and
Rajkummar Rao who have won hearts
with their earnest performances. While
Anil's act makes you believe that there is a
lot left in him as an actor to perform and
experiment, Rajkumar reminds you once
again why he is one of the bests in the
business. One super-hit jodi for sure!
Coming to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, her
Baby act is half-convincing yet passable.
She has used of glycerin which is evident
from her scenes. Also, she looks happy and
in a holiday mood when she is kidnapped
by two rookie kidnappers which won't
work well with the audience.
Overall, Fanney Khan is a one time watch
film which has a strong and relevant
message with endearing performances.
Lastly, keep a tissue-box ready if you are
an emotional person!
