Now, it was time to put the last part of the plan in action. Mallika loved playing match-maker and was pretty much aware of her best friends' stupidity.
"Since there are four of you and I have a few other games in mind, we'll have it done in pairs."
Before Mallika could continue, Rudra ran to Siddharth's side. "Since her was considerate enough to buy me such an apt gift, he's my partner." While most of then found Rudra's reason acceptable, Mallika and Om grinned.
They knew exactly why Rudra chose Sid as his partner.
"Okay then, Rudra and Sid, I want you guys to perform on a romantic number!" Everybody hooted while Rudra himself wolf-whistled, ending up in Shivaay reprimanding him about 'manners'.
The audience rolled in laughter as they danced to the latest romantic hit 'Dil Diyaan Gallan', trying to come off as sensual and 'in-love' as possible.
They all clapped enthusiastically. "Well, the next bakras, try to beat us." Siddharth winked and Anika looked at Shivaay nervously.
"Actually, no." Mallika interrupted.
"Considering it's two of my best friends, I have a better punishment."
"That's not fair Mallika! I deserved a better treatment then."
"Well, you enjoyed every bit of your punishment." Mallika showed her tongue.
"All you guys have to do, is stand under the mistletoe." Mallika grinned.
All of them in the room broke into violent coughs while Anika looked at them in confusion.
"Rudra, thank God we weren't asked to do that." Siddharth muttered.
"Is that even a punishment?" Anika asked.
Rudra took it in a different way altogether and added, "Exactly Mallika Di! That's more like a prize!"
Anika was yet again confused as they all laughed while Shivaay turned red.
She looked at Shivaay and complained, "Sombody please bother to explain! Why has Billuji turned into a tomato?"
At that they burst into laughter once again. Anika, as soon as she said that, realised that something was not right. Billuji was blushing. The Shivaay Singh Oberoi was blushing!
"Well, go find a mistletoe for yourself. Anika knows exactly where they are, considering she put them up herself." Mallika pushed them a bit. "Actually, all of us are moving into the lawn for dinner. You guys join us when you are done!"
"Won't you guys make sure we actually fulfilled the punishment?"
Mallika smiled at her friend's innocence. For a moment, she felt if she was doing the right thing, pushing them, but then satisfied herself. They themselves were aware of their feelings, just not ready to confess. They are two stubborn heads and definitely needed a jerk.
"Anika, we rather not witness what is about to come." They all snickered.
"Don't worry Anika Didi! Shivaay Bhaiya will explain it to you." Saumya smiled.
"Rather, he'll demonstrate it for you!" Rudra whistled.
And so, they walked to the lawn, leaving behind a very confused Anika and an equally blushing Shivaay.
-
Anika walked to the nearest mistletoe, hung low, inspecting it.
"Mallika insisted I hang them at different corners. God knows why corners?"
"I did hang a lot of them in her bedroom. Serves her right for not even telling me their purpose."
Shivaay chuckled, thinking what Siddharth and Mallika's reactions would be.
"I was doing that when you weren't here."
They then dived into deep silence, just standing there, looking at each other and then turning asay on beng caught.
"So..." Shivaay stuttered nervously.
"I was wondering who gave the gift to me. The dress was really pretty, wasn't it Billuji?" Anika smiled, trying a conversation.
"Yes it was." Shivaay felt awkward, praising his choice. But then, one of his heart's choice was standing right in front of him and he couldn't help but praise.
Anika's thoughts wandered to guess exactly who gave her the gift when she realised that nobody said Shivaay's name as well. She sharply turned her head towards him and looked at him, her eyes wide.
"You gave me the gift?"
Shivaay shrugged, suddenly feeling like a teenager.
"Oh Bete Ki! I never imagined you'll have such a choice! How did you decide on that dress?"
"Well, I imagined you and..." he left it awkwardly.
"And what about my size?"
"I made a guess," Shivaay gulped awkwardly, "but you can change it if it doesn't fit." He added. She was making it even more awkward.
"You know, I gave you the frame." She muttered softly. Shivaay looked at her, standing close to him in the crammed up corner, her face dimly lit and a far-off look on her face.
"I guessed it as soon as I said Rudra's name." Shivaay confessed.
She looked up at him in confusion.
"Then why were you in such a hurry. Could've waited."
"Well, I wouldn't get this punishment with you." Shivaay said, not thinking twice.
"Anybody else would have. Or maybe nobody. I could have stood under this all by myself or with someone else. What's the big deal?" Anika shrugged.
"It's not only standing under the mistletoe Anika."
"That, I gathered. But nobody really explained it to me, so it's meaningless."
Shivaay subconsciously noticed how he had walked closer to her, or maybe she walked closer to him. It was all the same.
"There's this thing in the Western countries. Standing under the mistletoe."
Anika's eyes looked on curiously, urging him to explain further. Shivaay's heart paced faster.
"It's usually a married couple, or someone in a relationship..." Shivaay paused. What was he to say now?
"Basically, two people in love?" Anika provided.
He looked at her, surprised.
"Yeah.. Sort of.." Shivaay ran a hand through his hair.
"Then, why did they make us stand together? Do the people in love just stand? I am sure you don't love me..." Anika rambled, her thoughts scattered. Shivaay did not fail to notice how she only mentioned his feelings, not hers.
"It's not only standing under a tree." Shivaay's voice grew husky.
"Toh?" Anika's voice was soft.
Shivaay took a chance. Never was he so unsure of his decisions but nothing was usual around Anika anyways. He moved even closer and brushed his lips against hers.
Anika shuddered, her heart thumping frantically. She could only say his name softly and Shivaay took the most unplanned decision ever. Pressing his lips on hers, he finally managed to explain what standing under a mistletoe meant.
Anika kissed back zealously, not quite believing what was happening. In her mind, she was sure it was a dream but her heartbeats told otherwise. His heartbeats told otherwise.
When they pulled apart, Shivaay's brain started working in overdrive.
What if she thinks I am taking her advantage? What if she feels nothing for me?
"Anika, did you want to kiss me?"
Anika looked at him, her eyes rather searching for an answer in his.
"Did you want to?" she answered back and Shivaay sighed. She would never give him answers, will she?
To Anika, it was all a mistake. What if he thinks she also wants him not for him but for his money? He always thought of her as his 'typical middle class' type of person. What if he thinks that he was just proven right?
His silence terrified her and she tried pulling away. Her eyes had welled up and she wanted to run away, hide and not show her face to him anymore.
Shivaay tightened his grip, closed his eyes and took a deep breath. "Yes." He muttered so softly, Anika was almost sure she was imagining it.
She looked at him, trying to know whether it was her imagination, when he said, "I said yes, Anika. At least answer the question now."
Anika's face broke into a smile that let out a lot of emotions. Thankfulness, relief, excitement, nervousness and happiness, of course.
She immediately pressed her lips to his and felt Shivaay's break into a grin as well.
When they broke apart, they looked at each other, happiness radiating all over the little corner.
"This is not a dream, is it?" Anika asked, still a little out of breath.
"I hope not." Was all Shivaay could answer.
Suddenly, it was as if their bubble burst and Anika's eyes widened. She gulped visibly and turned red. She struggled, only to find his hands wound around her tightly, her own wrapped around his neck.
"Oh Bete Ki! This really isn't a dream!"
"You dream about kissing me?" Shivaay grinned boyishly.
"Well, I could ask you the same question." She shot back, coming to terms. She started relaxing again and saw Shivaay smile.
A thought struck Shivaay and pulling a little away, he said, "Remember the dress I gifted you?"
"Obviously I do, I eat my almonds."
Shivaay grinned a little and said, "Well, I thought my kiss blew you away." Anika hit him on his arm and asked him to continue.
"Be ready tomorrow at 7. In that dress."
"Why?"
"I am taking you on a date, obviously."
"You never asked me, I never said yes." Anika looked away crossly.
Shivaay used his free hand and turned her face towards himself. Placing a quick kiss on her lips, taking her by surprise, he answered, "I know you won't say no."
"Tadibaaz, kanji aankhon wala Bagad Billa." Anika bit back a smile.
"Well, I'll ask then."
Anika looked at him expectantly.
"Future Mrs. Shivaay Singh Oberoi, will you go on a dinner date with your to be husband?"
Anika looked at him in shock, gaping at him like a fish.
"You never asked me!" she groaned and hid her face in his chest. Shivaay laughed at her.
"We'll do the asking part tomorrow, okay?"
"Pinky Promise?" she looked at him with a pout.
"Pinky Promise." Shivaay smiled and took her for one last kiss before heading towards the waiting 'ShivIka shippers'.
-
"Took you guys long enough.." Rudra muttered as he chewed on a piece of paneer.
"Well, they must be arguing in there." Saumya commented, waiting to see their reactions.
"I don't think so Saumya." Mallika grinned as she notice their flushed faces. She flung herself at Anika who hugged her back, laughing at her reaction.
"Is it double celebration?" she asked Shivaay.
"Please say yes." Om added.
"Well..." Shivaay frowned a bit. "Yes!"
They erupted into cheers. Well, mistletoes worked their magic.
