Pongal is the Tamil name for what the rest of India call Shankaranti..

It is the day when the sun changes course and Uttarayanam starts and so the temepreture starts warming up and so we ger spring and summer.

In TN and Kerala it is also the time of the first of the 3 harvests   harvest of the year.

So the Sun is worshipped and the new rice is cooked with jaggery and offered to sun god.

Pongal is a noun form of the word Pongu which means to rise up.
When the rice boils and the lather gathers up and flows down the people shout pongalo pongal as in the people, the community, the village the state and the country see more prosperity this year.

   

The second day is called mattu pongal.  (madu means cow)
This I the day of the cattle.

The cows and bulls are washed and decorated in all finery and taken in proecession as a mark of respect for working in unison with the farmer to produce the rich harvest. and the cows for giving the all important A2 milk and its added forms.

the third day is called the kanum pongal (kanu means see)  where people visit each other and wish, congratulate  and gift each other motivating to work hard for an equal and better harvest next time.  .

It is the state festival of TN and so they have  3 day holiday.

This year Pongal falls on on 14th , 15th and 16th January. Loss of a weekend off for TN people ...
