Bharata's eyes hosted several uncontainable tears, tears that possessed the potential to reveal the miseries his heart housed. With the blurry vision they granted him, he cast a long gaze at the pair of slippers that rested on but a chair that was lined in hay and cosy cushions that people looked up to, refusing to abandon them even for a second just as his brother had refused to go against his mother's wishes. The amount of respect he still had for that foster mother of his, whose boorish and unjust desire for a throne for her own unfortunate son had him aimlessly wandering in the forests, was something that seemed too ideal and hypothetical to be of this world. And just as there was regret on his mind and on that of his mother's, there was but robust firmness that ruled the one who was born to rule the world. And so, dishevelled and disappointed had he returned, breaking his own promise to his family subsequently honouring his brother's promise to his parents, yet not empty-handed and after giving another word he was determined to keep. He would not sit on the throne, nor would he accept the crown for it was rightfully his brother's and would continue to look after his subjects and the matters of the state still relying on his brother to be with him and lead him while registering his presence in the form of the footwear he had handed him. Little did that crazy brother of his know that mere slippers wouldn't be able to content him and he would forever be plaguing for his guidance, looking on with hungry eyes!
As Bharata still stood motionlessly with all the depressing thoughts decapitating his ability to think, Mandavi observed him from the door. She had always known her Rama bhaiya and Sita didi would never return for words were accompanied by resoluteness for the both of them. Yet false hopes had she used to water her wry, undermined soul and that of his for which she was extremely guilty. When his state had completely treaded the rest of her feelings, she walked up to him and placed her hand upon his shoulder. In response, he turned to face her, utterly decimated yet not losing control over himself.
"Mandavi, i couldn't keep my promise to you! "He exclaimed, sighing deeply.
"Neither could i, arya! "Mandavi stared at the ground and said in a voice that was barely audible but Bharata looked up at once revealing he was completely ignorant towards what she had to say.
"Indeed, arya!" She continued, still unable to let his eyes meet his "When we took the seven vows, dashrathanandan, i had promised i would give your happiness the topmost of priorities. But i failed to do so."
"Why do you say so, my dear?" He asked, forgetting all his sorrows for a minute for there was no way in which his wife could have neglected his happiness.
"Arya, i asked you to go to the woods and get Bhaiya, Sita didi and Sumitranandan back even though i knew they would never approve of it. Wasn't it similar to letting your loved one venture into the tiger's den, knowing well that they wouldn't make their way back? I let you into the den of distress, aryaputra basing it on a tiny hope that could buy my happiness. I placed my happiness over yours and therefore i have wronged you!" Mandavi let out all her agony while exhaling only once and looking up once or twice, only to lower her gaze again.
"Oh dear! "Cried Bharata, catching hold of her chin and making her look up at him as her innocence swept him off his feet "My dear, you can never wrong me, oh how mindless and innocent can you be? You are my most priced belonging, Mandavi and i shall never blame you, nor can i be ever brought to believe that you can be selfish and value your joy over mine because i know you can never do that even if you want to. Do not speak in a manner as that that embarrasses me and do not worry."
"That is so kind of you!" Said she "Yet arya i..."
"Sushh!" He said, holding her mouth "Not a word. Rama bhaiya has bestowed upon me the responsibility of looking after his kingdom while he is away. Do you want to divert my attention by bringing up your silly worries? Know that you can give me nothing but love!"
"Alright, i won't!" Replied Mandavi, turning red "But i also know that his absence would keep breaking you and the void in your heart would only be filled on his return."
"That is undeniably true." He retorted "However Mandavi, will you all ever be able to forgive me for not being able to bring him back?"
"We have, already!" She spat, smiling with difficulty "And now who is it who is bringing up his worries? Arya, we can only give our best to it, you must keep your promise to the one who never breaks promises and wait..."
"Wait, a wait that would probably seem never ending. The royal palace now looks secluded and it is like someone has robbed the citizens off their smiles." Bharata looked lost.
"You ought to make sure it doesn't seem so, you ought to retrieve their smiles and replenish their peace, even if you are slowly crumbling within and living every second of your wait as though yugas have passed! You have to do it for your bhaiya and bhabhi, for your mothers, for Urmila, Lakshmana, Shatrughna, Shrutkirti and last of all for me." Guiding him was his other half, encouraging and advising him through it all.
"I assure you i will strive for it. Yet i want you to promise me you'll be there. There to hold me when i fall, to console me when i weep, to empower me when i am weakened. " Said Bharata, complemented by his eyes rolling in love and hope.
"I have always been there and always will be." Reassuringly did she say.
