Was Akele hum Akele tum way ahead fo it's time?

Aamir and Manisha were struggling singers who fall in love with each other. Aamir proposes to Manisha. Manisha refuses the proposal at first by saying that she wants to concentrate on her career. Aamir convinces her that both of them will try to make it big together but after marriage, he forgets his promise. He doesn't support Manisha when she tells him that she still wants to become a singer and after they had a baby, it became more difficult for her to start a career so she leaves Aamir and her baby, struggles a lot and finally becomes a successful singer. Later she drags Aamir to the court to get her kid's custody. She even gets the custody but in the end, she decides to stay with Aamir and her son.

Lot of people criticized the movie during that time for showing Manisha leaving her family for her career. People called her character selfish and showed sympathy towards Aamir's character. They even criticized her for fighting it out for her kid's custody.

It was the 90s when it released. Was it way ahead of the times?

Do u all agree with what Manisha's character did in the movie?

When I was younger, I was against what Manisha did obviously. That's how the general sentiment in the society goes. But, now I think I can understand her side and think it wasn't that bad a decision. It helped the situation eventually.

Edit: It is still ahead of the time we're living in, more so was KvK which released in the 70s.
