Ok Jaanu Review: A Breezy Pleasant Romance
By Russel D'Silva | January 13, 2017, 14:27 PM
REVIEW
Movified Comments
There were a spate of romantic films from the 70s to the 90s that were centered on familial discord, status quo, caste differences, and the infamous love triangle. However, the audience is no longer interested ins such genre tropes, so filmmakers are now adapting to new formulas to sell their romantic tales - live-in relationships, commitment phobia, and career vs. love - the roots of which can be traced back to Salaam Namaste back in 2005. Ok Jaanu mixes all these new-age romantic formulae to come up with a film that's breezy and even pleasant on the surface but has nothing new to offer beneath.

So, Adi and Tara (Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor) meet at a common pal's wedding, sparks fly, and love blossoms. He's a game developer, who dreams of migrating to the US. She, a wet-behind-the-ears architecture dreaming of shifting to Paris. Both want each other but know that they can't be with each other in the long run because their career paths will eventually take them on their separate ways. Solution, let's live in till we have to ultimately part ways. However, things in movies as in life are never that straightforward, especially when it comes to matters of the heart, and, as expected, the initial desire gives way to differences of epic proportions when the time comes to part ways. Why? Because that silly old thing called love never makes it easy, does it?

The script moves along at a nice clip as long as the romance remains fun and frothy. You'll quite enjoy the casual banter and mischief played out between Aditya and Shraddha as they take you along their journey of trying to make things temporarily work. But once the fun and games are over and problems creep into their relationship is when problems also being to weigh the film down and also expose Shaad Ali's ineptitude at handling the more complex scenes.

(Also Watch: Up close and personal with the Ok Jaanu stars)

We buy into why Adi and Tara wanting to find a stop-gap solution for their love, we also buy the hurdles they face after some time, but we can never buy their methods to deal with those hurdles because they aren't sold to us convincingly. What seems to be regular issues faced by tons of modern-day couples are played out on repeat mode and needlessly stretched. At one point you do wonder why such logical and level-headed people at the beginning of the film suddenly become inept at working out simply obstacles in their relationship.

For their part, Aditya Roy Kapur's and Shraddha Kapoor's chemistry helps even out the clumsier portions of the screenplay. Aditya is in his elements and coolly waltzes through the film while Shraddha once again bring her by-now familiar and perfected coy, demure act to the fore. However, she needs to revamp it soon before it gets stale. A.R. Rahman's music while pleasing on the ears is nowhere close to the caliber of his erstwhile masterpieces, but then again, that's how most of the film plays out - appealing at first glance, showy even as time moves on, but has little else to say or point out.

(Also Check Out: Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur's scorching Filmfare shoot)

Nevertheless, the light tone maintained throughout the film makes it a decent trip for a date and a sweet, well-done climax kind of redeems the narrative after some of its shortcomings. Plus, there's Naseeruddin Shah who always pops up whenever you need him to get through the more-strenuous portions. Wish, there was more of him and Leela Samson in Ok Jaanu. If you're in the mood for a breezy date film with your loved one, then go for it.

Adi (Aditya Roy Kapur), a video game developer saves a complete stranger Tara (Shraddha Kapoor), an architect, who was about to jump in front of a local train in Mumbai after fighting with her boyfriend. Just few days later, the two meet again in a church at Adi's close buddy Jenny's wedding and they hit it off instantly. In no time, they become more than just friends, in their words, Jaanu.

Adi follows Tara on her work assignment to Ahmedabad and they spend quality time together. After returning, Tara shifts to Adi's rented room at retired High Court Justice G Shrivastava's (Naseeruddin Shah) house. His wife Charu is a renowned classical singer and Alzheimer's patient who often leaves the house on her own and loses her way. Adi and Tara rescue her a couple of times.

Very soon, the aged couple grows fond of the youngsters. Charu's bonding with her extremely caring husband, whom she fondly calls Poplu, inspire the young lovebirds. However, they have a very strong no strings attached condition in their relationship and choose to respect each other's privacy. But that does not happen in reality and they end up behaving like every other couple, who get worried when they can't find each other, fight in a posh restaurant and click selfies when they are happy.

Six months pass like a dream and then comes the time to separate. Adi creates a video game called Mumbai 2.0, for which he has to move to Los Angeles and Tara gets admission to study architecture in Paris. Extremely upset for having to leave each other, the lovebirds decide to enjoy the last 10 days of being together!

OK Jannu Review: Script Analysis
Here is some more old wine in a new bottle. The story is just so predictable! Bollywood has witnessed N number of movies with a similar storyline on no commitments and no strings attached relationship. This one adds to the list soon after Befikre, which released last month. There is absolutely nothing new in the story.

Naseeruddin Shah's character is interesting. He is a strict but affectionate person, who treats his tenant as his children and takes care of his ill wife single handedly. He is a person to whom they can confide and plays a father figure to them. His wife Charu is also a very kind lady but unfortunately often fails to remember people owing to her disease.

Tara's relationship with her mother depicts how children get affected when their parents part ways. There are not too many characters in the film but the characters are nicely created.

Dialogues like Charu saying, "Tum dono Manglik ho? Tab toh shaadi ho sakti hai" and Adi and Tara planning to name their pet dogs and kids Shishupal' will make you laugh out loud.

OK Jannu Review: Star Performance
Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur's chemistry needs no introduction. The Aashiqui 2 co-stars seem just made for each other.

Aditya's acting is commendable, especially in a scene where he is shocked to hear about their engagement plans from Tara.

Shraddha has put up a fairly good performance throughout.

Naseeruddin Shah is a delight to watch!

Leela Samson's portrayal of an Alzheimer's stage two patient brings tears to the eyes.

OK Jannu Review: Direction, Music
Kudos to the director for choosing just the right set of actors. Viewers do enter the theatre with high expectations from the helmer of films like Saathiya and Bunty Aur Babli and he doesn't disappoint them. The first half of the film moves pretty fast but slows down a bit in the second half.

Adi and Tara fall in love a bit too fast, as if they will miss a flight if they don't fall in love right now. We wonder if people do fall in love that fast in reality!

Some scenes in Mumbai's local trains reminds us of Saathiya. There are few scenes, which just add to the length of the film and it would still be great if these could be omitted. Otherwise the film is more or less tightly edited.

Tracks like Ok Jaanu, Kara Fankara and The Humma song could be heard on loop. The music overall is great!

OK Jannu Review: The Last Word
OK Jaanu is an extremely entertaining film. Adi and Tara's chemistry will make you feel young and want to fall in love once again! This film is a must watch for all romantic souls!

Ok Jaanu Review By Vishal Verma, Glamsham Editorial
Send to Friend

An adorable, fresh and breezy rehash of Mani Ratnam's 2015 multiplex hit O KADHAI KANMANI (Oh Love, Apple of my Eye), Shaad Ali's OK JAANU is a harmless tribute to his mentor/guru - Mani Ratnam's 'playing safe' return to mainstream recognition. How much it 'figures out' for Shaad after the KILL DIL debacle and JHOOM BARABAR JHOOM that failed to make the required 'dhoom' needs to be seen.

However, the 'AASHIQUI' (love struck) minded youngistaan will find it as a sweet love letter to their valentine; even after finding this Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor starrer is not only repeating their charming chemistry post AASHIQUI 2 but also revisiting the cliches of rom-com at will.

OK JAANU MOVIE STILLSOK JAANU MOVIE STILLS

Mani Ratnam's original was set in Mumbai and this official remake by Shaad Ali also does the same. Even the names of the lead characters are not changed.

A promising video game wizard Adi (Aditya Roy Kapur) glances through the gaps in between the bogies of passing trains at a wannabe top architect of tomorrow Tara (Shraddha Kapoor). But actually they meet properly later at a friend's wedding in a church seated few seats away from each other. Whispers and phone numbers get exchanged and simultaneously their disagreement on the institution of marriage makes them a perfect match. After bunking offices at will, touring 'aapro Ahmedabad', and doing 'Chamma Chamma' on 'Hamma Hamma', Adi and Shraddha decide to 'live-in' surprising retired judge Gopi Shrivastav (Naseeruddin Shah), owner of the house in which Adi is stationed.

Symbolizing the concept of love till the end of times and commitment, Gopi is married to the love of his life Charulata (Leela Samson) a renowned classical singer suffering from Alzheimer's. Gopi cooks for her, takes care of her and even after Charulata's growing disease, is happy that she still remembers him and calls him by his nickname given by her out of love.

The rest of the story is how Adi and Tara finally say 'jab tak hai chanda or sitara, saath hamesha rahe hamara' plunging into the belief of shaadi and commitment.

Shaad continues the Mani Ratnam influence in his narration and is able to give the film a breezy look. The deja vu of his earlier work, SAATHIYA comes in but it's not harmful. The best part of OK JAANU is the contrast of Adi and Tara's belief depicted in the wonderful relationship between Gopi and Charulata.

The elder couple's episode gives this rom com a welcome debatable edge and a layer as the script rightly justifies Tara's disagreement over the institution of marriage. However Adi's unexplained belief on not getting married hampers the young couple's conviction to their common belief but the endearing episodes of Gopi and Charulata redeems this flaw.

Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor make an adorable pair and are at their charming best.

Laced by Ravi K. Chandran's marvelous capturing of Mumbai city, the movie is technically superior with smart craft and editing by A. Sreekar Prasad. A. R. Rahman's music adds to the flavour. The remix of 'Humma' and 'Kaara Fankaara' look better while one watches the film. Saajan Aayo Re is soul stirring.

Naseeruddin Shah excels and Leela Samson is earnest. Naseer gets some gems to deliver - 'never miss the train even if you don't have the ticket' is one of them. Kitu Gidwani as Shraddha Kapoor's mom chips in with valuable support.

On the flip side, the movie is overpowered by predictability in the second half making it appear boringly longer then the duration. Bollywood rom-coms continue to nurture this cliche idea that marriage is the end of life and love but many a times it's not the case, for a considerable chunk it's a beginning.

Mani Ratnam made a comeback by 'playing safe' with O KADHAI KANMANI and his follower Shaad Ali has just repeated what Mani did. Mani's film was feel good, fresh but not a great cinema as per the calibre of the prolific helmer who is said to have left his influence on RGV, Shaad Ali, E Niwas etc.

Shaad Ali though successful in making a feel good and harmless rom-com losses mark on not being original and mostly rehashing his mentor's work in OK JAANU for the thinking audience.

For the rest OK JAANU is breezy, harmless love story that repeats Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor's charming and adorable on screen glory (read chemistry).

OK Jaanu movie review: Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur's aashiqui gets a Mani Ratnam twist
Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur's OK Jaanu has hit the theatres. While the film is an official remake of Mani Ratnam's 2015 hit O Kadhal Kanmani that starred Dulquer Salmaan and Nithya Menen in the lead roles. Helmed by Shaadi Ali, OK Jaanu reunites the superhit Aashiqui 2 jodi of Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor to reprise the characters of Adi and Tara played by Dulquer and Nithya in the original. Is the film worth your money? Well, here's our take on Shraddha Aditya's latest outing on screen...
What's it about
OK Jaanu is the story of non committal Tara and Adi who want to focus on their careers. Adi is a game developer whose only aim is to make it big and go to the US. Adi accidentally meets Tara first at the railway station and then at a friend's wedding. The two instantly hit it off and even exchange numbers. During the course of their interaction Tara reveals to Adi about her plans of pursuing architecture in Paris. Adi and Tara at the beginning decide that marriage isn't meant for him and opt for a live-in relationship instead. How they convince an elderly couple (Naseeruddin Shah and Leela Samson) to accept this modern concept and let them live in their home and how the former get influenced by the latter's love forms the second half of the movie. Do Tara and Adi pick their careers over love? Well, you'll have to watch the film to find out.
What's hot
While the film's lead protagonists are Shraddha and Aditya and the story revolves around their lives, it is Naseeruddin Shah and Leela Samson's love story that will touch you the most. Yes, Mr and Mrs Srivastava give this otherwise regular story some much needed depth. There's nothing wrong with Mani Ratnam's OK Jaanu story, yes it is not a Romeo Juliet and it does not have some trying situations for the couple to fight and realise their love for each other. But not all love stories need tragedy and sometimes it is in fact an easy breezy romance that makes for a good watch. It's a regular girl meets boy story and how their initial attraction transforms to some strong feelings for each other.
Aditya and Shraddha fare well as actors in this one. The part actually lends to Aditya's real life easy personality and hence he manages to do justice to his character in most parts. While Aditya's good looks and charming smile will keep you distracted there is one particular scene where Shraddha tricks him about their parents meeting to take their relationship forward, where the actor shines by emoting perfectly. Shraddha as the happy-go-lucky girl does a good job.
The dialogues penned Gulzar give you a wide variety. While you have Adi and Tara mouthing lines that most youngsters do, the language and nuances change when senior actors take stage. There's one part where Mr Srivastava asks Adi to help him fold his sleeve up as he's amidst household chores. Naseeruddin Shah says, "Mere aasteen upar kar do and you know that Gulzar is at work.
AR Rahman's music and Ravi K Chandran's cinematography will win you. Shaad Ali proves that he loves Mani Ratnam and literally recreates frame-by-frame of the original (OK Kanmani). And yes, Anita Dongre deserves a special mention for Shraddha and Aditya's styling. The hues and the clothes are so impressive that you'd want a makeover asap.
What's not
The Humma Humma song seems a complete misfit. It's too forced and visually jarring. And I'm not complaining about the perfectly choreographed moves inside a hotel room. But the whole vibe, is too abrupt. Juvenile as it may seem, Shraddha's hot pants with latkans hurt your eyes and one wonders if she's indeed going to sleep in those. A feeling you often have while you catch one of the saas bahu promos on TV. (Also read: OK Jaanu music review)
While Shraddha and Aditya both fare decently through the first half, the emotional scenes are a major let down. There's very little scope for an actor to NOT perform in this film, and the climax is where the real test lies. Unfortunately both Shraddha and Aditya fail to make you feel for their characters when it is most needed. What's worse is you have two prolific actors in the same frame. And yes, Shaad Ali has a massive Saathiya hangover.
What to do
Well, OK Jaanu will be a treat to Shraddha and Aditya fans. If you are a sucker for romantic films or then easy movies then you wouldn't mind spending your two hours and fifteen minutes in the theatre for this one.

"...it's a pointless film because an exact and I mean frame to frame exact version already is in Tamil. If you're interested in the story of Adi and Tara, a young live in couple in Mumbai, you can see Mani Ratnam's vastly superior OK Kanmani. I can guarantee that you will fall in love with Dulquer Salmaan and Nithiya Menon..."

Read Detail Review
Nirmata (Makers)

Directed by Shaad Ali of Saathiya fame, the director is in good form with this film considering his one was a huge disappointment, Kill Dil.

Produced by Mani Ratnam and Karan Johar, since its an official remake of Mani Ratnam's Tamil film O Kadhal Kanmani, the film not only has his vibes around with the music, but the Saathiya vibes too.

Alekh (Story) - Patkatha (Screenplay)

Not judging whether the director did justice to the original version but the film is definitely a fresh take on the exhausted topic, commitment phobia.

Film making is a tough job, either you are disappointed with the core matter or climax. This film that deal with millennial couple problems is one confused cup of tea for us, we didn't like quite a lot but we also did like it overall.

The film's topic on contemporary romance is ordinary but the take is refreshing, as in its drama free and doesn't burdens one.

The whole film is only good in parts and it's the climax that is super impressive because it is relaxed, seems real and not typically done.

The music and screenplay has been kept intact from its Tamil predecessor, which is a good thing but still the script should have been altered a bit to make the film more interesting. Especially the pace of the film needed variations, it followed one straight line. It is a scene-for-scene remake and capitalizes on great moments from the original film. Also, a 20-minute additional edit would have made the film happening.

One actually captivating part of the script is the parallel subplot with Nasser Sahab's story.

Abhineta (Actors)

Shraddha and Aditya's chemistry is not just natural, its gifted. They both shine throughout the film in roles tailor made for them. Or we can put it this way, they have acted so well that they actually become Tara and Adi from the film for us.

Naseer Sahab's character adds a lot of weightage, sense, emotions and is essential in the film's script and concept. Both him and his wife played by Leela Samson add a practical and sensible angle to the film and makes it more coonecting.

Geet Sangeet (Music)

Rahman's music with with Gulzar Sahab's lyrics weaves magic for this film...It's just out of this world fantastic.

Nirnay (FilmyCurry Verdict)

In the end, when you walk out, there is this unknowing happy smile on our face, and that's all matters in a film. And we guess that's what makes this film a good one.

'Ok Jaanu' Movie Review: Aditya Roy Kapur & Shraddha Kapoor's Cute Chemistry Makes This Refreshing Love Story Worth Watching With Your Jaanu!
13-Jan-2017 | 222 | Jaivardhan Chaudhary

'Ok Jaanu' Movie Review: Aditya Roy Kapur & Shraddha Kapoor's Cute Chemistry Makes This Refreshing Love Story Worth Watching With Your Jaanu!
Star Cast: Aditya Roy Kapur, Shraddha Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah and Naseeruddin Shah

Director: Shaad Ali

Producer: Mani Ratnam, Karan Johar and Apoorva Mehta

Claps For: Performances, Cinematography, Music and Direction

Slaps For: Clichd storyline

What's New: A less melodramatic, more urban and fun side of Aditya and Shraddha's chemistry!

Popcorn Refill: Interval

Plot: Aditya and Tara are two individuals completely against the concept of marriage. While the young lad dreams of making it big in America as a video game developer, Tara is an aspiring architect with dreams of shifting her base to Paris. The two meet at a friend's wedding, and soon find themselves attracted to each other.

They decided to live together for a couple days before going their own ways to achieve their dreams. But as the phase of attachment begins, saying goodbye to each other for the sake of their career becomes a problem!

Performances: The previous decade saw the rise of the man-child on the big screens. And ably joining the league of Saif Ali Khan and Ranbir Kapoor is Aditya Roy Kapur. Aditya literally owns the movie with his infectious charm, smile and goofy attitude. While his previous roles proved his mettle as an actor, this one proves that he has it in him to connect with the youth and become the next big hero of the generation since the actor brings so much of himself to the role of Adi.

While we've seen how amazing Kapur is as a romantic actor, it's a complete delight to watch him not trying to overshadow Naseeruddin Shah's performance or prove that he too is a great actor, but just stand there and play his part with the much-needed conviction.

Shraddha Kapoor is a like a breath of fresh air who never fails to win hearts as the innocent and cute girl. Be it the nervousness in her eyes before her first kiss with Adi or the ease with which she walks out of her office while talking to her jaanu on the phone and narrating how she's making a fool out of her boss- Shraddha delivers a sincere performance and walks shoulder-to-shoulder with Aditya.

Both Shraddha and Aditya's chemistry is the biggest reason why this movie lives up to its expectations. You've seen them look into each other's eyes and sing romantic duets, and cry hugging each other. But Ok Jaanu' brings out a completely different aspect of their on-screen chemistry. Despite the exclusion of romantic melodrama, the two create a rather refreshing, new and adorable aashiqui on the big screens! They know how to remain crazy and have fun; and at the same time know when to add the magic of intense romance to their performances.

Naseeruddin Shah, as usual, is a treat for the eyes. Taking over the responsibility from Prakash Raj, Shah lends the much-needed maturity and emotional depth to this otherwise fun-loving flick.

Leela Samson has done a good job.

About The Movie: Shaad Ali's Ok Jaanu' will be compared to two films the most- one is its own predecessor OK Kanmani', while the second is the recently released Befikre' which too had its characters playing the "no-marriage" and "no-serious-attachment" card time and again before discovering that they cannot live with each other. However, Ok Jaanu' is any day a better film than the Aditya Chopra directorial.

Right from the first scene till the last one, Ok Jaanu' completely relies on the screenplay of OK Kanmani' to recreate the magic. However, it's no joke to achieve what a great director like Mani Ratnam did a few years back; and that in itself is a win for Ali, whose previous directorial was nothing but plain disappointment.

Be it making the lead pair walk down the streets of SOBO or getting the two to romance each other inside a local train or BEST bus- Shaad perfectly captures the essence of Mumbai; and how the daily routine and aspirations of life play an important role in an urban couple's relationship!

There's magic in nearly every scene. Whether the one where Adi and Tara exchange numbers inside a church or when they express their love after a short trip to Ahmedabad- Ok Jaanu' will ensure that you come out of the theatres with a warm and fuzzy feeling.

The jokes are spot on, while the conversations between Adi and Tara are realistic and at the same time complete fun. Plus, scenes of the two with Naseeruddin Shah and Leela Samson are like a cherry on the top.

Add to that the music by A. R. Rahman. Thankfully, the makers don't aim for another musically hit album a la Aashiqui 2' but incorporate tunes that ably support the scenes and make it a delight to watch! The only problem with Ok Jaanu' is its clichd storyline- something we've seen in all the recent films. While the storyline is predictable, Shaad and his team ensure that you remain engaged in the world of Adi and Tara without getting bored.

Here's a movie every urban couple will easily be able to relate themselves with. If you too belong to that generation that ensures giving love priority but not making it your life's only motto, then go and watch it with your Jaanu!

Combo-On-Offer: Romance + Drama

Verdict: We give Shaadi Ali's Ok Jaanu' CLAPS for being an adorable romantic flick along with shining performances by Aditya Roy Kapur, Shraddha Kapoor and Naseeruddin Shah.
