There has been an obtrusive rise in the trend of Bollywood movies being shot at real locales, the general public didn't even know existed before they saw it on the big screen. Lately directors seem to have developed a penchant for stepping out of the sets created for shoots and use real life locations as milieu for filming their movies.
The Box Office has seen a bunch of youth centric movies in the last few years, many of which have also had their scenes extensively shot at different college campuses across the country.
Listed down here are a few of those movies in which breathtakingly stunning college campuses served as the quintessential backdrop for filming and they instantly transported everyone who saw, right back to their college days.
1. 2 States- IIM, Ahmedabad
Based on the bestselling novel by Indian author Chetan Bhagat, 2 States is a story about two MBA students, Ananya and Krish, who meet at IIM, Ahmedabad while pursuing their courses and eventually fall for each other. The movie is shot by and large in the magnificent IIM campus and while the protagonists do look stunning, the beauty of the backdrop, clearly steals the show.
2. Raanjhanaa"IIMC, Delhi University
Yes, all this while you thought the movie was shot in JNU, because thats what the movie told you. But due to some legal issues in procurement of licenses, the crew wasnt allowed to shoot on the JNU campus. The makers therefore filmed scenes at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication campus, Delhi University where they essentially attempted at creating a faux JNU vibe. The Sonam Kapoor- Dhanush starrer explored different corners of the IIMC and gave the audiences a sneak peek into the scenic Delhi College quite perfectly.
3. 3 Idiots- IIM, Bangalore
Another Chetan Bhagat novel adaptation, 3 idiots is a coming of age comedy drama film that revolves around the lives of three engineering students at a certain engineering institute called Imperial College of Engineering, (ICE). The scenes depicting their lives in the fictitious ICE have been shot largely at the Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore over a period of 33 days. Throughout the film, the viewers get to see the lobby, foyer, hostel rooms and different sections of the sprawling campus, that are bewitching to say the very least.
4. Bodyguard & Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge- Symbiosis, Pune
The massive acre campus of Symbiosis Institute in Pune has been a popular choice for directors and rightly so because tucked away in the scenic valley, this college makes for a rather picturesque setting. In 2011, Bodyguard, starring Kareena Kapoor and Salman Khan was filmed here. In the same year, romantic comedy Mujhse Fraaandship Karogewas released and that too was predominantly shot on the Symbiosis campus.
5. Rockstar- St. Stephen's, Delhi University
Directed by Imtiaz Ali, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Nargis Fakhri as protagonists, the movie was a huge success and its soundtrack took youngsters by storm. The movie portrays the life of a young student from Hindu College, Delhi who aspires to become a great singer someday. The flashback scenes in the movie essentially depict his life in the college and a great deal of scenes was filmed at the Hindu College, while a couple of them were also shot at Hindu College and Shri Ram College of Commerce. The campus buildings had an unprecedented ethereal air about them that only worked as the perfect backdrop to make the end result so striking.
6. Student Of The Year- Forest Research Institute, Dehradun
This 2012 Karan Johar blockbuster was hands down the most glamorous movie of recent times. Apart from the three new faces and a dozen new artists he launched in the film; what caught the eye of many was the larger than life college and resplendent lives of students portrayed which made everyone hate their not-so-fancy colleges. The college shown in the movie was a fictitious St. Teresa College which in reality was the Forest Research Institute of Dehradun. The vibrant environment, beautifully designed edifices, contemporary libraries, gave just the perfect feel to the movie and naturally fascinated the young audiences.
7. Rang De Basanti-India Habitat Centre, Delhi University
With power packed performances, compelling storyline and a winning soundtrack, this 2006 Rakeysh Omprakash Mekracreation took the country by storm. The college sequences of the movie have been substantially shot at the India Habitat Centre of Delhi University and they have managed to capture the Delhi college culture effectively, be it sitting and snacking on omlette-pav or rehearsing for play in the auditorium; this movie is one of the best depictions of college life of a Delhiite.
8. Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na- St Xavier's, Mumbai
An instant hit with the youngsters, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, starring Imran Khan and Genelia DSouza in pivotal roles was a movie about a bunch of college kids and their coming of age. Opening song and initial scenes of the movie have been elaborately filmed at the reputed St Xavier's College, Mumbai. The gothic architecture of the college building, antique windows and stunning chapel make for the perfect milieu for this movie.
9. Fukrey- Miranda House, Delhi University
This 2013 Indian comedy film starring, Pulkit Samrat, Varun Sharma, Ali Fazal, Manjot Singh, in lead roles is a tale of four slacker boys from Delhi and their metamorphosis into responsible young adults. The principal filming of the movie took place at the esteemed Miranda House (a women's college affiliated to Delhi University) where major college scenes and opening song have been picturized.
10. Ishk Vishk- Sophia's, Mumbai
This 2003 romantic comedy film starring Shahid Kapoor, Amrita Rao and Shehnaz Treasurywala was an out and out college drama that focused on relationships and heartbreak amidst love, friendship, anger, jealousy and a range of other emotions. Sophia College, Mumbai was where major scenes of the movie were shot preponderantly.
