Twinkle Khanna

Twinkle Khannas latest column is all about them nipples, among other things. I love that Mrs. Funnybones is one of those celebs who use their position to call people out on shit. Her post tackles with issues of misogyny, the sexism Smriti Irani faced and Serena Williams' recent nipple controversy at Wimbledon.

Here are excerpts from her column:

Misogyny is a nebulous creature. It flies out from the mouths of poker-faced men and surprisingly also from jeering women, flutters around the room, not quite settling down at first, till it finally sinks in and nips your skin. But if you tear or bleed or cry or weep, then alas, you are being the hysterical, hormonal woman that hadn't they already foreseen?

Smriti Irani, former HRD minister, is one such woman in the midst of a clearly misogynistic storm of ridicule. A formidable woman, a successful woman and now a woman dethroned from the lofty world of academia... Her tenure may have been riddled with controversies " replacing German with Sanskrit as the third language in Kendriya Vidyalayas, Rohith Vemula's suicide, the JNU debacle... But in the cabinet shuffle that led to Smriti Irani being shifted to textiles... none of the other ministers made an appearance on the front page of an English daily with the headline Spinderella', or on WhatsApp jokes that had the PM texting Mrs Irani saying, Sorry Honey no HRD feelings'. And I doubt that the sizes of the minister's shirts were discussed even as the size of her blouse made the rounds of the Twitter world...

Twinkle Khanna

But Mrs Irani can take heart from the fact that she is not alone in this Gordian knot. Serena Williams, tennis champ with 22 Grand Slam titles to her name, has also recently been a victim of body-shaming. Last week as she played at Wimbledon, there were jokes as well as outrage that one could see her nipples through her white tennis outfit. Yes, she has nipples, I have them, my 70-year-old neighbour who wears a cotton vest under his shirt but still manages to inadvertently flash his nipples all over the building compound definitely has them. But this also led me on an interesting quest. So, last night, when the man of the house called out, Come to the table for dinner!' Hunching over my computer screen, I absentmindedly said, Not yet, I am trying to find a picture of Leander Paes' nipples!' This reply, of course was met with stony silence, but lo and behold, a minute later, I had a picture of Mr Paes and his nipples sticking out of a sweaty black Nike t-shirt as he swung his racket fiercely; and I also found pictures of a whole bunch of other male and female tennis players exhibiting the same.

But I understand why there was such a hue and cry over Serena's nipples. How else will you try and pull a woman on top of her game to your level, obviously not when the only thing you swing is a fly swatter while sitting in front on the TV and even then miss three of the four flies sitting on your bowl of French fries? So, you simply body-shame her.

My thoughts: Although I agree to a portion of what she is trying to say I feel like she is just trying to be a pseudo crusador of womens rights? I honestly see this as a non issue. Why does she suddenly need to feel so strongly about it when I didnt really see making fuss about anything in media. Also yes I get it that nipples are normal, it is a normal part of the body. But does it mean she should stop wearing a bra and walk around topless? I dont see men wearing it. Yes they are the one and the same but this is nothing sexist about it. I would have atleast respected her if she became a champion of topless activists and used civil disobedience. But if she thinks nipples are not an issue then why does she walk around wearing a shirt? 😕

She is probably active on some American twitter channels where Serena's nipples were a bigger deal.

I haven't seen the match she is talking about but it does sound like a highly subjective issue. Yes nipple are normal and both men and women old and young have it all. But the significance has always been on females. I have not created this practice but it is what it is. Could Serena would have worn a better fabric that didn't had to make it so obvious since it was not a fashion show but a sport and could he seen by both minors and adults is again debatable. But nipples are nipple and this isn't just a Indian society issue but a global taboo. If she herself doesn't feel them to be a big deal then why didn't she went shirtless like her husband does for movies?

The gist of my post is I feel like she is just grasping at straws. This isn't a misogynist or sexist issue at all.

See this is what I'm saying. She is fighting against supposed body shaming but indulging in same behavior by judging others. How does she know why somebody is sitting home and swatting flies? Maybe they are less active. Maybe they have a physical condition. Maybe they just love their French fries. How does it really matter? She thinks she is fighting for misogyny but a lot of women do care about their breasts and don't think it is anyone's business to see their nipples. There is nothing uncivilized or sexist about it. It's their personal choice.

But I'm sure 99.99% women practice breast covering so it doesn't make them an accessory to this flawed and misogynist practice. Hey I'm all for women empowerment. If she said girls should be happy with their bodies. Small breast big breasts it's all ok and be comfortable in your skin that will be empowerment. But telling them it is ok to show your nipples and people should stop making it as taboo is not empowerment. Guys also have balls does it mean they should walk around on full display and people shouldn't feel offended since it's a part of a man's body?
