Single Day Records of Hindi Films
Back in 2013, when we did a similar article, big films were crossing the 30 crore mark at the box office. But in the last couple of years, on a major holiday, 35 and 40 crore on a single day has now become possible.
Happy New Year and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo are the only two films that have crossed the 40 crore mark on a single day - which also happened to be the biggest day for film business in a year i.e the holiday for Diwali.
Back in the day, Hrithik Roshan's Krrish was the first film to collect Rs 5 crore on a single day and Ghajini was the first film to go into double digits. 10 crore plus opening has now become normal' even for films featuring the young stars in the country. But back when Ghajini released, it was earth-shattering.
In 2010, Dabangg came and conquered the box office. For the next couple of years, Salman set the record with his Eid releases - Bodyguard became the first film to cross the 20 crore mark and within a year, Ek Tha Tiger smashed every box office record by becoming the first film to accumulate 30 crore on a single day.
Dhoom 3 did the unthinkable by collecting 35 crore plus on a non-holiday.
Single day milestones:
- 5 crore - Krrish (Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra)
- 10 crore - Ghajini (Aamir Khan, Asin)
- 15 crores - Dabangg (Salman Khan, Sonakshi Sinha)
- 20 crores - Bodyguard (Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor)
- 25 crores - Ek Tha Tiger (Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif)
- 30 crores - Ek Tha Tiger (Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif)
- 35 crores - Krrish 3 (Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra)
- 40 crores - Happy New Year (Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone)
In the next few years, it'll be interesting to see which film will cross the 45 and 50 crore mark on a single day. 50 crore will truly be a massive achievement!
