Ahalya's story will be dealt in two parts , since, the single post will get too long.
Ahalya , the first in the list of Panchkanya . Her story is sad very, very sad but it has a lot to teach, she is not given a voice, only silence and this silence screams of her innocence.
Ahalya literally means unploughed land, created by 'Brahma' ( an epithet for Brihaspati) She presides over the earth and her blessings renders our minds like an unploughed land , which is bereft of all malice. Her story is narrated in Ramayana ofcourse. Its in the Mahabharata and all the 18 puranas, the katha sarit sagar (ocean of stories) and all of them have a new dimension to add .
Ahalya is given to Gautama as wife (and Indra was disappointed!) because of his restraint over his senses; as time passes, their family grows and they have three sons Shatananda, Chirakarin and Saradwana, they also have a daughter Anjana (mother of Hanuman) who was adopted.
Indra was never able to forget and he kept a tab on Ahalya.
Brahma puran says Indra duped Ahalya by assuming Gautama's form while in some other stories she is aware of Indra coming as Gautama, some stories she is sexually assaulted by Indra
In Katha Sarit Sagar ,Indra disguised himself as a cat and entered Gautama's ashram and the latter sees him leaving , he angrily asks Ahalya " Who is standing there"? She remarks with a sly smile " esha khalau majjara"! That definitely is a cat ! In other words , she says: "that's my love". There's a pun on the word majjara, which in prakrit means my lover (ma - my; jara- love or lover)
Anyway Rishi Gautama was very furious and he curses her to be stone, which again is a pun on the word 'stone'
Ahalya was aghast, horror struck , petrified by the words of the rishi and she withdrew herself from the world around her.
Her story is curiously linked with the story of Ugratapas and Shilavati , the son and d-i-l of Atri and Anasuya .
The son was wayward and his wife was way too devoted and was blinded by his love. Once , Ugratapas wishes to visit a prostitute; a leper, he wouldn't listen to the counsel of his family and was very adamant to fulfil his wish. His wife Shilavati then decides to fulfill his wish and carries him in a basket , its dark and the lady and her husband don't notice rishi Mandavya engaged in meditation and , by mistake Ugratapas touches the rishi with his feet in terrible fury , the rishi curses Ugratapas to die before sunrise. Shocked after hearing the curse, Shilavati , then counter curses that , if she was ever devoted to her husband, if she had always served her elders with devotion then there'll no sunrise.
The whole world then panicked . Surya/ Sun had to stop his chariot and his charioteer Aruna was greatly agitated, sensing this opportunity he decides to play a prank. He turns into a woman and then enters Indra sabha, where Indra is enamored by her beauty and they make love , a boy is born out of this union , the boy was as beautiful as the mother , he is named as Suvalin (Vali/Bali) After this , Aruna becomes a man again and returns to take charge of his duties as charioteer of Surya. Surya wants to know about why Aruna was missing? The latter tells him what had happened , so now Surya wanted to have a look at Aruna's female form and he too goes Indra's way! Another boy is born out of this union and is called Sugriva .. the two boys wouldn't stop crying as they wanted a mother , who could look after them , I & S now have dilemma, where to find a mother?! Aruna can't be a woman again to take care as a mother, his job would get hindered so Indra thinks of Ahalya, his friend who was a good mother , apart from her own sons ( Shatananda, Chirakarin, and Saradwana) she had adopted a girl 'Anjana' and looked after them very well so he instructs Matali, his charioteer to leave the babies into Gautama ashrama quietly; Ahalya would know and take care of those babies and it happened exactly the same. The babies were raised with lot of love and care and rishi Gautama didn't like it one bit!!
Did we leave , the fate of Ugratapas hanging? Well, all the God's descend and request Anasuya to coax Shilavati to take back her words as the world would be plunged into darkness. The noble lady obliges and has to sacrifice her son. Vishnu then promises that tridev would take birth as her sons for the supreme sacrifice made.
Back to Ahalya
Indra would now visit Gautama ashram regularly , to see the children and to see Ahalya, on whom he always had a crush..
Sometime later Ahalya does take Indra as her consort and that's why he gets the curse but inspite of this act, she is declared as sinless by her son Chirakarin. Gautama had not only cursed Ahalya, he also orders Chirakarin to chop her head off and in the same fit of rage he gives away Anjana to his friend Kunjara, the vanara king and leaves the toddlers Vali and Sugriva to the care of riksharaja .
Chirakarin was in a great dilemma , he thought how could he kill his own mother from whom he had taken birth and yet how could he not fulfill the orders of his father who was also his Guru , he thought over for a very long time, years passed and he was still thinking! When Gautama returns from remorse, he apologizes to his son for uttering a terrible order but his son says , he was all the while thinking and this relieves Gautama , he accepts that given to his ego he had uttered terrible words and blesses his son to have a very long life Chiranjeevi bhava!
What reasons Chirakarin gives to his father, before he says his mother was sinless and why Gautama had to accept it ...?
