Hello People,
I am new in this section but couldnt stop myself on asking a general opinion about whose way of loving her beloved is appreciated more.

Picking out two women from historical movies (based on Bhansali's movies ONLY) Devda's Paro and Bajirao's Mastani were way ahead of their time. They were open about their love confessions, they had the character and ability to look beyond the conventional social, racial, caste and religious differences and were not shy to take the first step.

Paravati or Paro waits for Devdas for 18 years. she is not afraid to come to his room alone at night to seek her right of love. Later, she even had the character to turn down her beloved to save her self respect. Once she is married, she looks past everything and is not afraid to go to the door step of a prostitute and demand to meet Dev. She is not afraid to go to Dev, after her marriage and ask him to come along so she could take care of her, and then, lastly, she is not afraid to run to her dying beloved when when her husband is calling out her name.

Coming to Mastani, it was love at first sight for her. This woman was not afraid to travel to a whole different culture just on the wish to meet her beloved. She stays in hostile conditions, she bears insult, until she is accepted and married, and spends her life as an outcast but refuses to leave her beloved and in the end dies in his name.

So these were two powerful women of older times presented to us by Bhansali. Whom do you all think has loved her beloved in a better way?

Is turning down your lover like Paro for your self respect right or agreeing to stay with prostitutes just for a glimpse of your lover like Masatni right?

Is asserting yourself on your lover when you know he is already married like Mastani did right or is stepping out of the way with dignity right like Paro did after knowing Dev's family plotted against her?

P.S - This is strictly a comparison of the CHARACTERS, NOT the movies or the actresses playing them.

People need to understand that Devdas is a fictional story so Paro did not existed in real life. Mastani was a real woman who lived. So their is no comparison.

If the topic is strictly based on two films made by SLB then Mastani was way ahead.

Paro . Because her love was not about getting married to Dev , or achieving him , she always wished for and wanted his happiness, and expected him to love her back. She did not ruin his life to create her own, instead his father-issues haunted him for his whole life.
Mastani was selfish, yes . she not only ruined Bajirao's happily married life, but also her motive was to win his love for herself. At the end you do not feel sad for her, may be dying was the best thing happened to her because life would be too tragic after all whatever she did .

The times when the stories hpnd shd also be taken into account before judging the characters. This was 1700s where polygamy was RAMPANT and it was not wrong at all to take multiple wifes and concubines. Men went off to war and never knew if they live or die. They wanted progeny everywhere to ensure their genes flourished which is why they married young and you had kids at 15 and 16 yrs. Mastani did not think it was a big deal to marry Bajirao or be with him. Marriage was never an impediment in her days, falling in love was. She was wrong to have fallen in love with him which is not expected in those days. She fell in love that was the fault.

Both I would say were selfish in some way!

Paro for knowing dev's happiness lied in her and still not fighting the world for him!! Choosing her mother's pride over dev's love!!
Mastani for choosing her love for Rau over her love for her son! I find it really selfish that in the search of immortalizing love, you forget that your son would also be alone in the world!!

in terms of movie n acting Bm
in terms of devdas paro n bajirao n mastani
devdas n paro hurt one another more than others..
yes devdas did hurt chandramukhi as well bt he never promised
chandramukhi his love or commitment
so paro devdas thr story is of selfless immortal life n love...tale of judai..

while bajirao n mastani frankly has a selfish love
story where kasi has been kind of given a raw deal..
am nt moved with thr love story much..
its an ordinary love story whr u desire someone end up
fathering a child n then ok go n die like mortals do..
nothing so special

Paaro's love was unconditional..so its Paro...
But both got trageic endings..
So its better to exist as a normal woman.. who falls in love with someone.. gets happily married..and stays happily everafter unless th death pwns you down!

Both r different. Mastani for me is braver. Well she didn't have a choice in reality of choosing her hubby. Her dad married her off to make alliance.

Who wud have thought Rau n Mastani wud fall in love.

She fought for her love . it's better to try to win your love instead of regretting later.

Yes dey were doomed but their names are immortalized in history!

She may have tried to survive after Rau's death but may have lost her will to live.

Mastani for me...I may be in the minority who did feel for the character...Bajirao n Mastani r actually what you call soulmates...her heart stops the moment Rao dies...so much luv she had for him n he for her... n their fight with the whole world to be with one another is what makes them so dear...
