Sanjay Dutt granted 30 day parole for nose surgery of his daughter

Bollywood actor and 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts convict Sanjay Dutt has been granted parole of 30 days because of his daughter's nose surgery.

The actor had applied for the parole in June saying he needed to respond to the ill-health of his daughter. Pune divisional commissioner sanctioned two days ago. He's likely to be home in next two days.

According to Vijay Satbir Singh, principal secretary (home), "We have been informed that the Pune divisional commissioner has approved the parole application and Dutt will be out after completing the formalities."

The 30-day parole can be extended by 60 more days and, therefore, he can be out of jail for maximum 90 days. Since the beginning of his his sentence in May 2013, the actor has reportedly been out of jail for 136 days. (28 days in October 2013, 90 days in December 13-January/February 14, 16 day in December 2014)

While furlough is a right given to the prisoner that can be availed of each year, parole on other hand is entirely on the prerogative of prison department officials. This decision may be quite controversial as another convict in the Bombay blasts, Yakub Memon, was hanged to death on 30 July.

Memon, who would have been 53 on the day of his execution, was executed just before 7 am today at Nagpur Central Jail.

Supreme Court's refusal to grant him 14 days of reprieve from the date of the rejection to his mercy petition by the President had evoked criticism.
