This is a slice of life cinema! Savor it till the last bite. Although at first it takes time to get into the pages of DIL DADHAKNE DO, you are never really out of sorts. In fact, you are never into it; but from the outside, you relish every bit of the drama that is unfolding on screen, with its humour, irony and matter-of-fact complacency.

As you watch the first few scenes unfold in Zoya Akhtar's latest, you are a passive viewer as one craftily designed sequence after another unfolds with telling effect. This is not your average Bollywood cinema. This goes one notch higher. No single character tries to hit out and every member of the Mehra family plays it to the 'T'. The supporting cast (everyone of them), break through the cauldron of 'Bollywood monotony' to add spice to their character. Even Pluto, the dog, who narrates the story in between, is used with ingenuity.

In a multi-starrer of this magnitude, it's easy for any one character to be ignored. But here, Zoya makes sure that even a bit role by the little girl in spectacles, stands out. With heavyweights in the frame, this is a tough task. Watch Zarina Wahab in her limited scope give a deadly demonstration of what a good performance should be.

Anil Kapoor is at his best as Kamal Mehra, the head of a business family who does not think twice before skewing any situation to his business advantage. It does not matter if his daughter Ayesha (Priyanka Chopra) or son Kabir, (Ranveer Singh) are the fall guys. His wife Neelam (Shefali Shah) is the perfect high society woman trying to keep things together, including her marriage, with a nondescript view of relationships around her, even that of her daughter and son.

So when Mehra decides to celebrate his 30th wedding anniversary on a 10-day bash on a luxury cruise liner in international waters with select guest, you gear up for a fancy holiday party. But what unfolds is the reality of their lives and of those around them, including the Soods, who were included in the last minute on the guest list in the hope of boosting his failing business.

Mehra soon faces some very important truths, beginning with his own family, far from the actual reality of the tough and calculative businessman that he portrays that he is. Every character on board has his or her life entwined with the other and the manner in which the plot moves forward on the high seas is stuff of which good films are made of.

Shefali Shah is superb, taking every blow with her chin up. If her performance in LAKSHMI was scary, here, she lends that right amount of credibility to shape this high-society woman that she is. Priyanka Chopra fleshes out a subdued, mature performance along with Anushka Sharma who too breezes in like a breath of fresh air. Having said that; her character in DDD looks like an extension of the recently released BOMBAY VELVET.

Ranveer Singh is refreshingly different adding chutzpah to his character. Vikrant Massey and Rahul Bose throw in their weight with good performances while Farhan Akhtar enters at a crucial moment, to lend a twist to the plot, which till then gives you the picture that everything is hunky-dory with the Mehras and everyone around them.

And though I have mentioned that every actor steals the show, for me it is Ridhima Sud, who powers through, in a very subtle, classy manner pushing her love story forward with meek enthusiasm.

The music is cool to the point that you don't take anything home with you, but enjoy it while it lasts. Special mention must be made of the choreography by Bosco-Caesar. Superb. Every step falls in place!

DIL DHADKANE DO may not find its audience with the typical, commercial, Bollywood masala filmgoers, but with the metros and the urban crowd, it's sure to be a monster hit.
