Dil Dhadakne Do Movie Review - Elite Entertainer

Rating: 3.5/5

Expectations:

We all know about the great writing flair of Javed Akhtar due to his path breaking films as a story writer followed by soul touching lyrics in many popular songs. Javed Akhtar's first wife Honey Irani despite of been popularly known as a child actor, also portrayed her writing skills by giving us some great films like 'Lamhe', 'Darr', 'Aaina', 'Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai', 'Kya Kehna', 'Koi Mol Gaya' and few more. The legacy continued with the launch of their son Farhan Akhtar as a writer-director in 'Dil Chahta Hai' followed by their daughter Zoya Akhtar as a writer-director for 'Luck By Chance'. Though, Zoya Akhtar got her biggest commercial hit in the form of 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara' which connected with both, classes and masses. Thus, right from the first announcement of her latest film 'Dil Dhadakne Do' with its unique ensemble cast on a cruise liner, the expectations were at its peak as the recall value of Zoya's last hit film 'ZNMD' was very high. So let's find out whether 'Dil Dhadakne Do' will match up to the high expectations and surpass the popularity level of 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara' or might end up being a medium level product just like it was in 'Bombay Talkies'.

Story:

'Dil Dhadakne Do' is a story of a business tycoon Kamal Mehra (Anil Kapoor) and his wife Neelam Mehra (Shefali Shah), who are celebrating their thirtieth marriage anniversary on a luxury cruise liner with their children Kabir (Ranveer Singh) & Ayesha (Priyanka Chopra). They are joined by their families, friends and relatives along with Ayesha's husband Manav (Rahul Bose). Kamal Mehra on the other hand is going through a financial crisis and so, wants his son Kabir to marry Nuri (Riddhima Sud), daughter of business tycoon Lalit (Parmeet Sethi). Little do they know, that Kabir is getting attracted towards a dancer Farah Ali (Anushka Sharma). What happens next is what the entire film is all about.

Screenplay & Technicalities:

The one line story is a typical Bollywood family drama type of story which we have been witnessing in the 60's, 70's and the 80's era films with actors like Rajendra Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Shammi Kapoor, Govinda, Rishi Kapoor, etc. Right from the first scene of the film the movie is highly predictable and moves on a snail pace. It's the treatment and the characters which makes 'Dil Dhadakne Do' interesting followed by the whole premise setting in the luxury cruise liner. There are many small moments and minute scenes like Anil Kapoor - Shefali Shah argument over the dinner, introduction of various characters while boarding the ship, Ranveer - Anushka Sharma first date, Anil-Shefali convincing Ranveer to get married, Priyanka Chopra playing tennis with Rahul Bose, Ranveer imagining a break-up story, Farhan Akhtar's view over equality, Priyanka explaining reasons related to Rahul Bose to her family, Anil firing Ranveer, family argument in the medical ward, Anil-Shefali's repenting, followed by the finale moment and few more, which will help you being engaged to the silver screen. Not to forget the quirky dialogues by Pluto the dog (voiced by Aamir Khan & penned by Javed Akhtar). On the flip side, the length of the film is almost three long hours and has many repetitive moments followed by few bland places in the middle portion of the film. Also, the dramatic finale part might ruin the viewing experience for many people who like films from of this genre. There should have been more hilarious or comical moments that would have kept the fun element intact in the film. The movie has been beautifully shot on the luxury cruise liner with some breath taking visuals of Greece and Turkey.

Music & Direction:

Music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy is not at par with their last two associations with Zoya Akhtar's films. Though, 'Swing' and 'Gallan Goodiyaan' are visually entertaining. 'Pehli Baar' could have been avoided. 'Dil Dhadakne Do' is used in the end credits. The background music is outstanding and goes brilliantly with the flow and setting of the film.

Director Zoya Akhtar comes up with an old story line in a modern packaging associated with it. She adds up the minute nuances in the film due to which the movie looks highly appealing. She does full justice to her main lead characters and displays them in all shades of life. The movie might not be Zoya's best work in terms of quality or on a commercial level, but is a far better product in this type of genre. It is a sweet and clean family film with some brilliant performances, which is hardly seen in recent cinema.

Performances:

Anil Kapoor looks fantastic and gives an ace performance as per the demand of his character. It's tough to take away your eyes from this evergreen actor. His body mannerisms and facial expressions are enough to essay his performance. Ranveer Singh is cute and charming. He adds up the life in the film, which at times tends to be bland and boring. Priyanka Chopra looks stunning and slips easily into her character. Shefali Shah is outstanding and delivers a fine performance. Together all these four main characters compliment each other's work and emerge as a winning team. Anushka Sharma is not up to the mark. Its good her role was not that lengthier. On the other hand, Farhan Akhtar was great in his small role and one does wish to see more of him in the film. Rahul Bose does full justice to his character. Zarina Wahab, Riddhima Sud, Parmeet Sethi, Manoj Pawa and others lend good support. Pluto the dog is super cute and entertains you with its presence.

Final Verdict: So bol meri 'Filmi Khopdi' iss film mein kitna hain Dum???

Dum??? Well the movie is an elite entertainer with decent performances and great moments attached to it. It's not as classy as Zoya's debut film 'Luck By Chance' or highly entertaining as 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara', but still has its own merits to end up as a decent watch. The masses might find it tiring, bland and boring, but for the ones who love such types of ensemble films will not be disappointed for sure. On an overall basis, 'Dil Dhadakne Do' is like having a Pani Puri in a five star hotel, which is totally healthy and looks visually appealing, lacking a bit over the spices.

The Pinkvilla Review: Dil Dhadhakne Do

Starring: Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, Priyanka Chopra, Ranveer Singh, Anushka Sharma, Farhan Akhtar, Rahul Bose & Riddima Sud

Director: Zoya Akhtar

Writers: Zoya Akhtar & Reema Kagti

Cinemotographer: Carlos Catalan

Music: Shankar Ehsaan Loy

Producers: Excel Entertainment, Junglee Pictures

Distributed by: Eros International

Zoya Akhtar's Dil Dhadhakne Do' extends the central argument of her thoroughly entertaining Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara'; that of following your heart's desires over diktats of conventions & calculated choices. This time, Zoya extends her universe of the super rich, super swanky to include a dysfunctional Punjabi family, and adds layers to their interpersonal relationships. Only in the process, her point and effort at times, feels labored. An introspective, visually soothing journey within, at times, this trip lacks a booster dose of intensity.

The film is narrated in Aamir Khan's voice, through the eyes of the wizened family dog, Pluto. In brief, the Mehras- Anil Kapoor & Shefali Shah- are a wealthy, successful married couple where the husband is a self made success story; and the wife is a socialite with a shrewd strategic mind. The marriage is a sham and their kids- Ranveer Singh & Priyanka Chopra- knows it. They also suffer it's side effects. The son is expected to inherit their business empire, even as his wants to be a pilot; and their daughter, the successful entrepreneur, is not considered family' after her marriage. She is married to Rahul Bose, in another shambolic set up. All four and a collection of family friends set off on a luxury cruise to celebrate 30 years of marriage for the Mehras. Here, chance encounters & past liaisons bring the brother & sister closer to their reality of wanting to live life on their own terms. And the film concludes in a predictable climax. A luxury cruise with wine, blue waters, tables laden with exotic dishes & catchy songs are part of a luxuriant mise en scene.

The film's biggest victory is it's succinct but firm handling of hypocrisy. By playing out nuances of petty rivalries between society wives, petty competition between business bigwigs & overarching fakeness of marriages, Zoya & her co writer Reema highlight the inherent dysfunctional but compulsive hypocrisies of Indian society. A second advantage that makes this film eminently watchable is its cast- Anil Kapoor is brilliant and Ranveer Singh is definitely more evolved and impressive in this role. Priyanka Chopra handles a conflicted role with finesse; although one wishes her character's angst had some more screen time. Farhan Akhtar is competent in his role even as Anushka Sharma feels somewhat under utilized. Shefali Shah is also fairly convincing as the suffering rich housewife who has little choice over her fate. Its supporting cast of the family's friends adds the much-needed garnish of comic relief & realistic conversations.

Where the film falters is its narrative. There are moments where too many layers are playing out simultaneously and have little room to breathe together. This becomes distracting. A few crucial scenes give you a sense of inadequate completion; giving you the feeling of leaving engaging conversation mid way. Subtly conveying human emotions is Zoya's strong suit; but at times, this film leaves you with a sense of unfinished drama.

Zoya has also tackled a crucial issue- that of an empowered woman seeking to leave a husband on grounds of dissatisfaction- aptly. One hopes that audiences view this element of the film objectively, and not with judgment. Accepting that a woman really might have a choice is still not common.

A detail that struck me is the engagement of this film with exotic Mediterranean ports; languid walks, soaking up the sea & sight seeing hardly find place in this crowded ensemble piece. What comes to mind is Death on the Nile'- the Hercule Poirot films with a similar setting. Influences of a journey on giving perspective to a confused soul draws from it's locations; which Zoya did so well in ZNMD. One doesn't see that bit in this film.

Having said that, DDD is great timepass, and it's a beautiful, visual story interspersed equally with laughter & introspection. Watch it for the family & the truism of dysfunctional relationships. You will be entertained.

The Final Verdict:

Ticket Price Value 75 Percent.

Dil Dhadakne Do Movie Review

Rating: 4/5

ddd review

Expectations: Dil Dhadakne Do is biggest multistarrer film this year. The film has interesting Starcast, Brilliant Director, Writer so one can expect only Blockbuster here. Trailers of the film are also promising and give great feel so in all cases Dil Dhadakne Do has to be a great feel good entertaining film.

Outcome: As mentioned above, film has great expectations so to keep them and satisfy the audience is the biggest responsibility of writers here. Dil Dhadakne Do is really enjoyable, entertaining and fresh cinema thanks to its subtle yet relatable feel.

The film is a story of dysfunctional Mehra family which has Anil Kapoor playing self obsessed Kamal Mehra, Shefali Shah as his wife Neelam Mehra who is skilled in pretending that everything's perfect, son Kabir Mehra( Ranveer Singh ) who has to follow his father's foot step always and a daughter Ayesha Mehra (Priyanka Chopra) who is successful working girl married to Manav (Rahul Bose). Mehra Family plans a great cruise party for the eventful 30th Anniversary of Kamal and Neelam where Kabir meets Farah Ali (Anushka Sharma) and falls in love. Ayesha also meets Sunny Gill (Farhan Akhtar) his childhood friend. What happens next? You have to watch the film to know.

Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti have written an amazing screenplay which just takes you at new high of emotions after every small interval. The screenplay is so subtly wonderful and has such connect that you will fall in love with everyone and everything. Pluto Mehra - The Dog narrates the story (done by Aamir Khan) which is another high of film. Watching the film you will laugh, you will smile, you will wonder, you will be teary eyed and you will have your finger under your teeth. Dialogues written by Farhan Akhtar are like pearls. Film is bit longer but never boring.

Performances wise Anil Kapoor deserves Top rank. He creates such aura and such charm onscreen that you will become his fan all over again and before going home you will buy DVD's of all his films. He is such a charismatic actor. Ranveer Singh is brilliant. He is treat to watch and will give goosebumps to female audience. Male audience will envy him. Performance wise he is excellent. Priyanka Chopra is too good. She looks hot and acts supremely well. Heart winner. Shefali Shah also acts very well. Farhan Akhtar and Anushka Sharma are also very good in comparatively short role. Rahul Bose is good. Pluto Mehra is awesome.

Zoya Akhtar's Direction is Excellent. Music of the film is good. Javed Akhtar's lyrics are rich. Cinematography is awww-some. Editing is sharp.

Overall, Dil Dhadakne Do is a perfect watch this weekend. Its going to be a Blockbuster. Miss it at your own risk.
