I just want to make certain I am understanding this correctly. Are you thinking that a choice to implant a bovine prosthetic valve is at the same level of ethical dilemma as having to choose between 2 children?
As someone who does have children I can tell you, it's not even close! Not sure how a vegetarian parent would react but would like to think that they too, would place their children first.

No offence. It was a hypothetical question.
You had asked a hypothetical question if anyone from the pro-ban group would refuse to give their loved one a valve made from a cow in case they needed it.

Your question assumed a future scenario where a product from a cow, a dead cow presumably might become irreplaceable in case a loved one gets sick. I am not comparing ethical dilemmas here.

Do you think the pro-ban group should endorse cow slaughter just in case they need a valve made from a cow in the future? Do you think this is a feasible or logical decision-making process?

Btw, valves, insulin etc are most often made from pigs as their DNA is the closest match to humans. I expect the Muslims and Jews would have the biggest issue in this case. 😆

Big list there. I ask the pro ban group, how many of these will you be giving up? If you or your loved one needs a valve replaced, will you refuse it?

People always have choices and most people do make conscious effort to avoid beef or its byproducts and thats why we have so many options for every products. A diabetic will choose choose sugar free product while a vegan will choose beef free product. Which valve r u talking about thats made from beef ? Anyways when its comes to choosing between life and death, obviously people will choose their love once but not at the cost of killing someone else. People should use the nature (animals) for their benefit but don't kill/harm them for our pleasure. It should be two way traffic not one way.

this discussion has gone way off-track... Again.. vegetarians are against consuming animals by killing them for sole purpose of eating.. if a cow js required for blood transfusion.. you can drain the cow dead.. if required,... the up side is the former saves more cows than the latter kills... so...yes have your capsules, jello, valves, kidneys and ... whatever else.. just dont kill it for eating purpose...

If me as a vegetarian come across a cow while driving i cant evade.. i will run her over... 😊

Bovine valves have been around a long time

Insulin in use these days is human analogue. Animal insulin is also in use but has declined considerably.

So it's not some future ethical dilemma.

As far as research is concerned, rats and mice account for about 95%. They say they are working on 3Rs: Refinement of tests so animal distress or pain is minimal, Reduction of the number of animals used in one particular study, and the Replacement, whenever possible, of animal experiments with non-animal experiments: https://www.amprogress.org/animal-research

As for medicines with animal derivatives, like gelatin in capsules or coatings, they don't necessarily need to make them using animal by-products. There are "vegetaria" alternatives available too. As long as they make a conscientious effort to wean away from "zootherapy", as long as we continue producing quality chemists, we don't need to worry about hypothetical moral dilemmas such as "the calf or my child" in future..

When it comes to saving a life then obviously it doesnt matter matter whether the valve is made from animal or piece of junk as long as it can save that person life. The point that some people are making here is give respect to life whether its human or animal. If we have right to live they have right too live too.

^^True. Humans donate organs and tissue too.

Except that in our case it is voluntary.

Now, there are things we have done to animals but so far what made us do them is mostly ignorance or lack of knowledge for alternatives. The hope is that we will not forever be ignorant.
