I disagree. Boyhood was a story of a boy growing from childhood into young adult. Ellar Coltrane was the only main protagonist as the story revolved around him. There was no female protagonist. Patricia Arquette along with Ethan Hawke who played his parents were supporting characters.
Requiem for a Dream revolved around four main characters and Ellen Burstyn was one of the four leading characters. It was Ellen Burstyn who shined the most out of the four and got the most appreciation for her performance from every quarters of critics.
Here Filmfare messed up. Tabu was definitely the main protagonist along with Shahid as the story revolved around mother-son relationship. Maybe they wanted to reward Tabu's performance and the only way to give her the award was to list her in supporting female category. The best female actor winner was fixed between PC & Kangana and they surely didn't want to go against the flow.
