List of characters:

Sneha (played by Neelima) - Main character of 'Thamarai'. Bold and fun loving person who lives with her aunt Rajalakshmi. She does not know about her family's haunting past.

Rajalakshmi/Raji (played by Nirosha) - Paternal aunt of Sneha, she is very caring towards her niece. She is very supportive of her brother Karunakaran who is in prison.

Karunakaran (played by L. Raja) - Sneha's father and elder brother of Raji. He is a doctor and founder of a hospital. He went to prison after suspecting and killing his wife Kasturi. He is worried about Sneha's feelings towards him when she learns of the truth. Sneha believes her father is doing business overseas but she has seen him in prison but thought he was someone else. Karunakaran hates his brother in law Raghavan for being the main reason for his jail sentence. He was cheated out of his hospital by Doctor Muthulakshmi who was his fellow doctor and took care of the hospital while she was in prison.

Kasturi - Sneha's deceased mother and the youngest darling sister of Raghavan. She was a nurse working in Karunakaran's hospital and they fell in love and married. She was killed by her husband Karunakaran. Doctor Muthulakshmi was her friend.

Raghavan (played by Varadharajan) - Head of the family and elder brother of three sisters. Married to Shyamala he has four children. He is very emotional about his sister Kasturi's death and hates Karunakaran. He is a stern, sarcastic man who does not openly show his love for the children. He refers to people he hates by the number of letters in their name. He disowned his son Rajeev for marrying Uma without his consent. He suspects Sneha of scheming something.

Shyamala - Raghavan's wife who is very friendly and kind towards her children. However she lives in fear because of her husband's daily rages.

Rajeev (played by Sai Prasanth) - Raghavan's eldest son who eloped with his lover Uma. He has a daughter named Kushi. In recent times he remains estranged from his controlling wife Uma. He tells Dwarakesh and Sneha about his uncle Karunakaran and aunt Kasturi's story however he does not know Sneha is his cousin. He is the boss of Sneha at her workplace.

Uma - Rajeev's bossy wife who is the daughter of millionaire Gajendran. She hates her husband's family for not accepting her and vows revenge on them. Currently she and her daughter Kushi are loving in Raghavan's house for a scheme.

Gajendran - Uma's rich dad who is a criminal. He bad mouths about Rajeev to Uma, trying to separate them. He hates Raghavan as well.

Kushi - Rajeev and Uma's daughter who is fond of her father's relatives. She always argues with Uma.

Meena - Raghavan's elder daughter who was unmarried and had a lot of failed marriage proposals for a long time. She fell in love with the married Kadhir but unexpectedly she marries his brother in law Saravanan. She is being pursued by Kadhir whom she is no longer in love with.

Kadhir (Ashok of KMKV) - Meena's former love who is married to Aarthi with a daughter. He is currently persuading her to love him.

Aarthi - Kadhir's wife and Saravanan's sister. She approves of Meena, unaware of her husband's affair. She is a daughter.

Saravanan - Aarthi's sister and Meena's husband who worked in the army. He is kind and a good husband to Meena but unaware about her past with Kadhir whom he considers a brother.

Dwarakesh ('Maniyarasu' of Chellame) - Raghavan's second son and Sneha's lover. A kind and sensitive but gullible boy who believes what his sister in law Uma says.

Priya - Raghavan and Shymala's talkative youngest daughter. Her elder siblings are aware that their parents adopted her. Suspected to be Karunakaran and Kasturi's second daughter - Sneha's younger sister. Currently she is against Uma and is friendly with Sneha.

Rajeev has seen Raji together with Karunakaran but doesn't know it's him.
