Music my Shashi-Shivamm is good, but not chartbuster. Songs like 'Ziddi Dil', 'Sukoon Mila' and 'Salaam India' go well with the flow of the film. The lori by Priyanka Chopra is soothing. Background music is average.
Debutant director Omang Kumar comes up with a brilliant concept, but fails to do justice to it. He focuses more on the personal happenings of Mary Kom rather than the one she is known for. The intensity of the film is mellowed down due to low production values. Also, one will find many brand promotions in the film, out of which few were placed in those eras, when they din't even exist.
Priyanka Chopra is outstanding and gives yet another flawless performance. Her physical efforts deserve special mention and is something which has never been done in our Hindi film industry by any actress. If only 'Mary Kom' on overall basis would have been as impactful as her films like 'Fashion' or 'Barfi', it would have done proper justice to her hard work and efforts. Its due to her presence and performance would like to add one extra star to the ratings. Sunil Thapa lends good support. Darshan Kumar is weak and fails to match up to Priyanka's brilliance. Shishir Sharma is fine in his part.
Dum? Well the movie has some good punchy moments with a fantastic performance by Priyanka Chopra. Also, it's not a bad film, but fails to create the magic which was created by 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag'. 'Mary Kom' is no where close to 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' nor the daredevil efforts of the real life of Mary Kom. It's a decent one time watch which ends up being a half knockout, instead of a full knockout film.
Mary Kom is a victory for its protagonist Priyanka Chopra, scriptwriter Saiwyn Quadras, and director Omung Kumar, says Laxmi Negi.
How many times has a movie touched people in a way that they cried with the characters and rejoiced with their victories?
And how many times do they recite the national anthem when the athlete wins yet another gold medal, the country's flag goes up in the stadium and makes the audiences' chest swell with pride?
Mary Kom, the boxer has done it many times, but now Mary Kom, the movie, truly packs a punch.
The fighter hails from a region which is struggling to make its presence felt on the national map; entered a male-dominated sport, and wrote her name in the annals of history with the aid of 'chai and kela' from the federation.
Mary's story is that of an underdog's.
It is a measured movie, deeply drawing us in with its protagonist, played with immense feeling by Priyanka Chopra.
Mary's story is delivered with a sincerity that makes it irresistible.
Like a boxing bout, let's talk about the movie in three rounds:
Round One: A pregnant Mary Kom in the opening scene kicks off the story on a poignant note.
The well-written script ushers the audience into the four-roped square of Mary Kom's world.
The words leave a mark when her 'Coach Sir' (Sunil Thapa) asks her to forget that the world is round but for her it will be square which symbolizes the boxing ring.
When Mary Kom is fighting with the boys in her village and vying for the coach's attention -- it may remind you of boxing films like Million Dollar Baby. But believe me, it is the only resemblance you will spot between Mary Kom and any other film based on boxing.
Indian women's boxing's most iconic figure, the magnificent Mary Kom, through Priyanka Chopra, ultimately lands with the force of a knockout punch.
Priyanka managed to get under the skin of her character and justifies just why someone would make sacrifices to excel.
With great makeup, the actress resembles the real life boxer in many scenes.
The film also displays great attention to detail in its setting -- from a simple village of Manipur to Mary's school and boxing hall where she trains.
Priyanka dominates every scene in the film, yet her coach (Sunil Thapa), and husband -- played by debutant actor Darshan Kumar -- makes their presence felt with their honest performances.
Just like Mary Kom, the boxer, the film's plot takes care that Priyanka talks less and 'pights (fights)' more.
Round Two: She is married with twins and her boxing career has vanished into oblivion.
Although her husband defies all odds to support her boxing aspirations, unlike her father, the road to success is less than rosy.
There is great regard shown to the Manipuri culture -- the Manipuri song played when Mary is fighting her personal demons -- supports my argument.
Round Three: Mary lands at her Coach Sir's door to receive training again.
It is then that he mutters the best lines in the movie and drapes a Manipuri shawl around Mary, saying -- a woman becomes doubly powerful after she gives birth and so they will have to work hard doubly too.
All the workout sessions in the gym have finally paid off as Priyanka looks all beefed up in the movie.
With her training in place and bidding a bitter goodbye to her children, Mary is all set to recreate history in a packed stadium with braying audience. That she wins the title is known to us, but Priyanka's performance in that sequence is worth the watch.
As the movie progresses, Priyanka starts boxing well and towards the last bout shown in the movie, she tries to replicate Mary's moves in the ring.
Full credit goes to Saiwyn Quadras (the scriptwriter) -- it was his idea to make a film on Mary Kom.
Exquisite work from director Omung Kumar, who seems to have found his groove with his very first movie.
Result: Only time will tell if the movie will be a hit or a flop but Priyanka has surely emerged as a better boxer.

The critics seems to be really harsh on Omung Kumar. Would MK have been better off directed by SLB? I mean he'd probably present things more like they were, rather than Bollywood-ise it, and be inspired from Chak De! and Bhaag Milkha (Not my words, many critics have said this)
Priyanka Chopra who has transformed herself into MC Kom on-screen has the never say never attitude . She is the gritty boxer from Manipur who makes her dream into Olympic medal-winning reality!
Entering a gender-dominated boxing ring is not a joke. However, MC Kom aka Priyanka just takes us on a journey of self-discovery where she turns from a poor rural girl from Manipur to Olympics.
Director Omung Kumar has brought in that precise feeling which will inspire all of us who watches the movie. Farhan Akhtar, Seema Biswas, Ben Kingsley have all inspired many by turning into the real-life character on-screen earlier. But, Mary Kom is just unexplainable.
Hats off to the debutant director Omung Kumar for bringing us one of the most inspiring biopics.
Story:
From the time the coach screams at Mary Kom, 'Mujhe bronze pasand nahin aata', till she ends up winning a gold, the narrative is just so awesome. The story goes back in time, where MC Kom (Priyanka) is shown as a person who is just not affected by any gender discriminations.
MC Kom is seen having a scuffle with a school bully very early in the narrative. Later on she takes on another far more dangerous bully who threatens to destroy her boxing career. This is how Mary is, she never stops fighting for the cause, in and out of the arena.
"The rest of the world may be round. But your world is this square ring," her coach reminds her pointing to the boxing arena. The struggle, grit, transformation, winning style are those emotions which Mary Kom depicts and takes us all through the movie. That forms the rest of the story which you have to watch it in big screen and not read it here.
Cinematographer Keiko Nakahara takes us all through the rough terrains of Manipur beautifully. A place where a girl child is a curse and a girl who fights to become a boxer, is the real struggle.
The director has not made the narrative too lengthy and stretch it. He has shown Priyanka as both a ferocious fighter as well as a tender mother.
Priyanka Chopra as expected has given her best performance. This will redefine her career in Bollywood. No other actress would have done justice to the role as much as she has.
The wonderful narrative, cinematography blended with excellent music composed by Shashi Suman and Shivum makes Mary Kom one hell of a movie which will win every heart in the country.
Mary Kom is an inspirational biopic from the first frame till the end. Omung Kumar has no doubt weaved the story so well that every person who watches this film will for sure get inspired.
Priyanka Chopra's masterclass performance goes without saying. Overall this awe strucking journey of MC Kom is all about getting inspired. There are no negatives which can be pointed out as a negative.
This film is waiting to give Box Office a superb collection for a woman-centric film.

...SLB and realistic? 😆 It would be just as melodramatic with him. To make a subtle film, you need a subtle director.
