Anjali Purohit's characterization

Hi All,
It's been some time since I've made a thread and I wanted to start a discussion regarding Anjali Purohit's characterization. I would like to make it clear that I am not criticizing the actress who plays the character but generating some discussion on the character it self.

First off Raj's parents have been a mystery element since the start of the show. Initially we were told that everyone in Raj's family has had a love marriage (first point of difference between the families) Raj's parents, Madhuri-Jashan and Raj - all love marriage candidates.
Then we learned that his parents stay in Australia for business - it wasn't clear if Raj's mom also worked or not at the beginning of the show.

I'm not sure what prompted CVs to create a powerful, successful and slightly arrogant business minded woman to be Raj's mom - perhaps to highlight the vast difference between the 2 families and how they approach life and to be additional support for Arpita's career ambitions - but that can be a different discussion. I'm not concerned about the character sketch of Anjali Purohit.
I'm not sure if this is a disconnect between the vision CVs had and how the actress was described to play the character or the actresses limitations in playing the character. Regardless of the reason I find the personality as shown thus far of Anjali to be disjointed - Raj and Madhuri are such sweet natured, kind, compassionate, down to earth people - as their mother I would have expected Anjali Purohit to be less abrasive - I can understand stern, assertive, but I would hope she had a little more compassion. If anyone here watched Pavitra Rishta - I would have expected Anjali Purohit (who is a successful business woman) to be similar to Sunanda Tai or Attu from PR - that level of assertiveness and sternness - a harder exterior but a fair heart underneath.
I didn't like the show down between Avni and Anjali at the hotel - granted Avni was totally out of line (thats a different discussion) but the way Anjali was shown to react and the way she told Avni to shut up in her room when Avni was trying to apologize - the whole scene the entire interaction just seemed out of context.
Does anyone else feel that Raj's mom came with a different set of expectations and what we are seeing seems slightly out of place?

I love his Mom she cares for her family but she is a business woman yes she was rude to Avni at the house but Avni behaved very un mannerly to her in the hotel. She wants a sweet girl for her son not some party girl who is disrespectful I know Avni is not disrespectful but his momthinks different because of how she behaved

Hello! Nice post. I have two major points in relation to this.
Firstly, I'll confess I've seen the Avni-Anjali first interaction very cursorily as I was busy these days. But from whatever i know, I feel that on order to add the drama they slightly exaggerated the whole thing. So the reactions of each of the two were more than what their characters would normally give. While this is something I didnt like, I guess they have to cater to everyone. But apart from that, I believe Anjali's character has been designed to contrast the Khandelwal's way of life and as I had mentioned in one of my posts earlier, this contrast can turn out to be a source of tension later which might lead to an interesting track.

Now the second point which i think is causing the problem. The creatives chose a different actress for this role earlier and had to change her at the last minute. Since scenes had to be telecast, they rushed and shot as fast as they could and also used body doubles. I feel that in such a situation, the whole thing became disjointed. It takes time to fit into the skin of a character and this actress didnt get even that much. The flow that would have come out got disrupted because of all this. I dont think Anjali is that hard-hearted also as today's episode did try to show her in a different light. But the whole thing didn't come out clearly because of the same practical reasons I mentioned above. Based whatever I have seen so far, I feel the issue is the actress and the time shortage rather than the characterization itself. The coming weeks will probably give us a better picture when the actress settles into her role.

Once again, nice post! :)
