Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the producer of Mary Kom, says only Priyanka Chopra could have pulled off the role of the champ boxer in the movie.

Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali compares Priyanka Chopra with "Million Dollar Baby" star Hilary Swank insisting that only "Barfi!" star could pull of the title role in "Mary Kom", a biopic on Olympic bronze medallist and five-time World Champion M.C. Mary Kom.

Sports drama "Million Dollar Baby" was the story of a waitress' determination to become a boxing champ and Swank played the protagonist in the film, which did so well that it took home four golden statuettes.

"'Mary Kom' is a very special film and no one other than Priyanka could have pulled off the role," Bhansali told reporters at the trailer launch of "Mary Kom".

"Priyanka is an atom bomb and power packed talent. Her dedication, passion, and commitment toward her work is commendable. If Hollywood has Hillary Swank, we have Priyanka Chopra."

Sanjay Leela Bhansali also compared Priyanka's talent with Nutan and Waheeda Rehman saying she is in the "same league".

Bhansali feels "Mary Kom" was destined to happen.

"If a film has to happen, it will happen. For this film, we had no meetings or readings. Omung was in the lift and told me he wants to make a film on Mary Kom and I said yes then and there. So, I feel the film was meant to happen," he said.

Directed by Omung Kumar and co-produced by Viacom18 Motion Pictures and Sanjay Leela Bhansali Productions, the movie will release Sep 5.

Actress Priyanka Chopra Wednesday unveiled the trailer of her much awaited film "Mary Kom". She plays the Olympic bronze medallist boxer in the biopic and described it her "hardest" work so far.

Produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and helmed by Omung Kumar, "Mary Kom" will have its world premiere at the forthcoming edition of Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

"This is my hardest film so far. Mary was the inspiration herself for me for the film," Priyanka Chopra told reporters at the event here.

"We worked for 18 hours in cold, rains, and in very tough conditions. It was team effort and I am happy that Mary was overwhelmed and cried after watching the film," added the actress.

The film shaped well, thanks to the support of Mary Kom, five-time World champion. Priyanka spent a lot of time with the champ from Manipur to understand the nuances, stance and style of a boxer.

She indeed is a powerhouse talent no doubt. Waiting for MK.

PC is best as Mary KOM. I can't see anyone else than her doing MK so flawlessly. She is brilliant brilliant brilliant in trailer.

So rave reviews have already started flowing Priyanka Chopra's way. But nothing can perhaps beat Sanjay saying -If Hollywood has Hillary Swank, we have Priyanka Chopra.
And it's not for nothing Sanjay chose to draw this comparison. In the 2004 Hollywood hit, Million Dollar Baby is about an amateur determined woman who works with a hardened boxing trainer to become a professional. Mary Kom too traces the journey of Indian boxer Mary's phenomenal rise to the pinnacle of glory.
While Hillary essayed the lead role in this Oscar winning movie, it's Priyanka Chopra who finally clinched the dream role of playing the dream role of India's celebrated female boxer.
Hillary's scintillating performance in this Oscar winning movie clinched her a plethora of accolades and appreciation. Even though both movies are based on boxing, we feel the cultural difference would make Mary Kom radically different from Million Dollar Baby. Whether Priyanka would be able to match or perhaps even upstage Hillary remains to be seen.
Sanjay however couldn't stop praising Priyanka. Comparing her to yesteryear actresses Nutan and Waheeda Rehman, Sanjay said, " Priyanka is the only actress who does roles that Nutan and Waheeda Rahman used to do."
Well, now that's a huge compliment coming from none other than Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
