Part 12

Aahil watched as Sanam rounded the corner and disappeared at the end of the hall. He ran a hand through his hair and half-smiled. He was truly in love with Sanam and it felt good to confess it to her although the circumstances in which he did so weren't the best.

But Sanam had made it clear that she did not have any such feelings for him. Aahil however, did not quite believe her. He had seen her eyes express something more than what she was letting on. It was either that or he just didn't want to believe that she wasn't in love with him. "But if she did not care for him why did she hug him after he'd returned? Why did she insist that he take off his wet shirt? Why didn't she hesitate before asking him to sleep in the same cart as her? She usually maintained all distances from him and all other males. So then how come all this was so casual for her?"

Aahil's mind was racing with a million questions. He decided to go talk to her but then thought it best to give her some time. He walked back into his room and lied down on his bed. He had wanted some sleep after all. But sleep did not come to him. So he decided to go for a walk in his garden. But when he stepped out of his room he saw Rehan.

Aahill knew that the nervousness fluttering in his tummy would be at ease after talking to Rehan. He called after him, but Rehan was in too much of a hurry and didn't hear Aahil calling him. Aahil pinched his forehead in frustration and then decided to follow him. Rehan was turning a corner towards the hall that lead to the kitchen.

"Now what would he want there? Everyone just had their breakfast..." Aahil was curious at first to see why it was so urgent for Rehan to reach the kitchen but he was really confused when Rehan didn't stop at the kitchen.

Rehan turned a corner and walked towards a hall that lead to only one room. Now, Aahil wasn't just confused but worried as well.

Rehan threw open the bedroom door, before Aahil could reach him,and entered the room. As Aahil stepped onto the landing, he saw something he wished he'd never seen.

Rehan was holding Sanam in a tight embrace and Sanam was patting his back.

"Sanam tum kahan challi gayeen thi? Main itna pareshan ho gaya tha!! Puri raat tum gayab theen aur tumhari koi khabar nahin thi!" he said as he let go of her and held her face.

"Haan woh Rehan..main," Sanam started but Rehan interrupted her.

"Tum theen kahan Sanam. Farmhouse se challi kyun gayin thee? Aur bina bataye?"

"Rehan, woh bus aisehi main nikal gayi wahan se aur phir..."

"Sanam tum puri raat bahar theen?"

"Humari gari kharab ho gayi aur phir hum.."

"Hum??!" Rehan interrupted again.

"Haan. Woh Aahil mujhe ghar le jane aaye thay lekin humari gari kharab ho gayi tho humme raat jungle main hi guzarni pardi."

"Tum puri raat Aahil bhai ke saat theen?" Rehan asked incredulously.

Aahil didn't like the tone Rehan was using. "So what if she was with him all night? What did it matter to Rehan?" Aahil thought furiously.

"Haan main unhi ke saat thi," Sanam answered innocently.

"Lekin tum aisi jaldbazi main nikleen kyun? Kuch hua tha? Kissi ne kuch kaha? Aahil bhai ne kuch kaha?"

Aahils hands balled into fists at his side. Rehan was not easing him at all. Instead Rehan was making him furious. Aahil felt like strangling him. Strangling him for asking such questions. For barging into this room. For touching his Sanam.

"Nahin unhone kuch nahin kaha tha. Rehan aap itne pareshan kyun ho rahe ho? Main aapke saamne sahi salaamat kharhi tho hoon."

"Haan Sanam. Shukar hai ke tum agayeen. Warna agar tume kuch ho jata to main apne aapko maaf nahin karpata. Tum mere liye bohut azeez ho."

Sanam smiled and cupped his cheek in her hand.

Aahil stumbled backwards at hearing those last words from Rehan.

"Tum mere liye bohut azeez ho." These words kept echoing in his mind.

10 minutes later he found himself in his room and didn't know how he'd gotten there. He closed the room to his door and pulled all the curtains. He fell back onto his bed and pulled over his covers. He wanted to sleep and forget all this as if it were all just a bad dream. Maybe if he slept, he could have a better one.

***************************************************************************************
"Haan Abdul sahab wohi wali jo maine aapki dukaan pe chuni thi. Size theek hi hoga. Mujhe pata nahin hai. Asal mein ye surprise hai to baad mein adjust karwalenge. Pandra minute main bhaij rahe hain? Haan, haan, main ghar par hi hoon. Theek hai. Allah hafiz."

Rehan just couldn't contain his happiness. He was in love with Sanam. And he was so ecstatic that he wanted to go tell Aahil this very moment. As a matter of fact he hadn't seen Aahil since he'd returned. He had to thank Aahil for bringing his Sanam home.

He almost ran to Aahil's room and then stopped himself. He would wait another half hour and then he would tell Aahil everything.
********************************************************************************************************

Nida was filing her nails in her bedroom when her phone rang. She picked it up.

"Haan Yasmeen. Kaisi ho?"

"Haan main shaadi kar rahi hoon. Aahil Raza Ibrahim se."

"Nida beta," Tanveer was standing at Nida's door and heard her talking. Nida had mentioned Aahil so Tanveer became curious and decided to step back into the hallway to eavesdrop. Clearly Nida had neither seen her nor heard her. She continued to talk.

"I know. Most eligible bachelor. Lekin ab woh bachelor nahin rehe ga. Woh to mera ho jayega. Aur uske saath uski poori daulat be," Nida smiled menacingly.

"Arre Nawab Sahab tho thay hi nahin aur Begum Sahiba tairhi undi. Mujhe paisa lene se kaun roke ga?"

Tanveer gasped. So Nida was planning to marry Aahil so she could have all the property and money? How could she do this? How could she beat Tanveer?

"Haan yaar sab planned tha. I mean property apne naam pe transfer kar ke Aahil se divorce. I mean he's such a playboy. Mujhe aisa larka nahin chaiyye. You know what I mean." She laughed into the phone.

"Tanveer ne jo besaak bichayi hain usse woh zaya nahin hone degi. Nida beta tum to is khel ki nayi khiladi ho. Tumhe harana to meri daein haath ka khel hai. Ab dekho ke tumhari baazi tumpe kaise palat thi hai." thought Tanveer and she stormed off to make a phone call of her own.

************************************************************************************************************
The ring had arrived at last and Rehan's face brightened up at seeing it firsthand. He had to show it to Aahil right now. He rushed to Aahil's bedroom and saw the door closed. So without hesitating he knocked. Real hard. Aahil opened the door five minutes later. He had freshly showered. Rehan hugged him and almost knocked the wind out of him.

"Thank you Aahil bhai."

"Thank you kis liye?" Aahil asked confused. The earlier incident had slipped his mind at the moment so he wasn't wanting to punch Rehan.

"Sanam ko wapas laane ke liye," Rehan answered excitedly. Aahil stiffened and pulled himself out of Rehan's hold.

"Main ye laya hoon Sanam ke liye. Socha ke aap se ek bhar aapki raay le loon," he breathed holding out a small blue box for Aahil to see. Aahil's eyes widened in shock. He could sense what was coming.

"Aahil bhai apka Nikkah do din baad hain. Maine socha ke uske baad main Sanam ko propose karoonga," he opened a box to reveal an intricately designed heart-shaped diamond ring. It was very plain and simple but elegant at the same time. Aahil was sure that it was just the kind of ring she would like.

His heart ached as the memory of what he had seen earlier came rushing back. His instinct was right. Rehan loves Sanam. And Rehan had jumped the wagon so fast that he was ready to propose to Sanam. Maybe he had already confessed to her as well.

But he had confessed too...last night. And he had been rejected. Was Rehan the reason for the rejection? Did Sanam also love Rehan? Was this why she didn't have feelings for him? Because she had already reserved her heart for Rehan? Aahil's mind began to race again and he was so shocked at this whole thing that he didn't have any words to say.

"Kya aapko pasand nahin ayi?" Rehan asked, with a crestfallen face. Aahil broke out of his thoughts.

"Nahin. I mean nahin, aachi hai. Congratulations," and with that he picked up the blue coat Sanam had worn last night and brushed past Rehan, who missed the gesture and smiled to himself before making his way to Begum Sahiba's room.
******************************************************************************************************************
"Nahin mujhe do din mein hi dulhan chahiyye. Mujhe har haal main dulhan ka intezam karna hai. Tume dugni keemat milegi agar ye kaam kal thak pura ho gaya. Subah thak tumare phone ka intezar rahe ga." Tanveer threw her phone on her bed.

"Ammi mujhe aap se koi baat karni hai," Rehan walked in.

"Rehan beta abhi nahin," Tanveer held her head.

"Ammi urgent hai," Rehan walked over and faced her. "Ye anghooti kaisi lagi?" he took it out and placed it in Tanveer's palm so she could feel it.

"Bohut halki si hai," Tanveer replied.

"Sanam ko aisi anghooti hi achi lage gi," Rehan responded.

"Sanam ke liye hai?" Tanveer asked surprised.

"Haan main parson usse propose karna chahta hoon."

"Propose? Rehan tum pagal to nahin ho gaye?" Tanveer shouted, clearly she was not expecting this. "Tum ek naukrani se shaadi karoge?" she scrunched up her nose.

"Ammi main usse mohabbat karta hoon aur woh ek bohut achi larki hai," Rehan pressed.

"Lekin hai to ek naukar," Tanveer countered. "Shaadi humesha apne barabar walon se karni chahiyye. Tumhare liye main heera lana chahti hoon aur tum ek mamooli patar se khush ho?"

"Ammi ye aap kya kherahi hain? Aapse main aapki manzoori mangna chaata tha. Agar hai to main khushi khushi Nikkah kar loonga. Agar nahin hai to main aapke baghair hi Nikkah kar loonnga. Lekin Nikkah main Sanam se hi karoonga," and with that he walked out of her room.

Tanveer stomped her foot.

"Ye kya nayi musibat kharhi kardi isne? Main waise hi itni pareshan hoon aur upar se ye Rehan. Sanam se Nikkah karega? Ek naukrani se? Ab main Sanam ko kaise tikhane lagaon?"

She paced the room and thought. A lot. And then it clicked. Tanveer's mouth grew into an evil grin.

"Ek raasta hai jisse main ek theer se do shikaar kar paoongi."

Part 13

Tanveer dialed number after number frantically. She had to get a hold of Sanam's Badi Ammi! And she would put all her efforts into doing so. She paced her room impatiently as she dialed the 13th number in her diary.

Meanwhile, Aahil's heart felt like it was constricting. He was shaking with anger. "Sanam and Rehan? Was this what was brewing right under his nose? A love story where his damsel was wanting to run off with his brother? How long has this been going on?"  he thought. He was storming off to Sanam's room. He had a million questions to ask her but he really didn't know what he should ask first. He finally reached her room after what felt like eons and threw open the door without knocking.

Sanam turned around in surprise. She had been adjusting her bed sheets and was not expecting a sudden entry. But as soon as Aahil saw her he lost it completely and in an effort to refrain from saying something he would later regret, he decided to keep mum and instead threw his coat (which she had worn last night) in her face.

"Ye doh deyna!" he barked and stalked out of her room, banging the door behind him.

Sanam pulled the coat off her head and stared at her now shut door, trying to register what had just happened. Aahil had seemed miffed about something and he seemed so different from the caring guy he had been last night. She stepped forward to  go after him to see what was wrong but then decided otherwise. This was the normal Aahil, whatever he said or did last night seemed like a figment of her imagination right now. Perhaps she had dreamt it all.

She put the coat on her bed and fished for the dry cleaner's number in her drawers.

*****************************************************************************************

Tanveer had finally found Sanam's Badi Ammi and had even called for her to join her for tea. Sanam's Badi Ammi was to arrive in less than fifteen minutes and Tanveer was pacing her lawn rehearsing her lines for her.

10 minutes later she heard footsteps and she froze to her spot. Of course she could not see the woman, but she was sure it was her so she began to deliver the lines she had committed to memory.

"Aasalamalikum Mohtarma. Main aapka kabse iintezar kar rahi thi. Aasal main mujhe aapki ijazat chaiye. Main Sanam ka haath mangna chahti hoon apne bete Aahil ke liye," she got straight to the point.

Dilshad adjusted her glasses. "Arre ye toh bohut achi baat hai Begum Sahiba. Lekin humari haisiyat...,"

Tanveer cut her off, " Arre aap kaisi baat kar rahi hain? Humme aapki Sanam bohut pasand hai!" and after plastering a sickly sweet smile Tanveer turned around to face Dilshad.

Dilshad's eyes widened in shock as they instantly recognized the woman who had killed the Khan family. Dilshad's purse slipped out of her grip with a small thud.

"Kya hua? Aap chup kyun ho gayeen? Kya aapki is nikaah ke liye manzoori hai?" Tanveer asked eager for a response. She walked towards Dilshad, found her hand and held it.

"Kuch to boliye," she pressed but she felt the hand slip out of hers and heard another thud. This time a loud one. She rushed forward to figure out what had happened but tripped over something large. A guard caught her.

"Begum Sahiba aap theek tho hain? Ye mohtarma to behosh ho gayin," he announced.

Tanveer yanked herself out of the guard's grip.

"Ya Allah inhe bi abhi behosh hona tha? Kabir ambulance bulao!" she ordered. And the guard rushed off in a hurry.

Tanveer frowned and kicked the earth beneath her. "Buriya se jawab bi nahin mila!"  She sat in her car and told the driver to drive to the bank. Another plan was cooking in her treacherous mind.
*******************************************************************************************************

Rehan was sulking in his room. He could not believe that Begum Sahiba, sorry, his Ammi, was not happy with him proposing to Sanam. Just because Sanam worked for them didn't mean that she was any less than Rehan. Rehan found a friend in her and her genuine personality made him fall for her. She was the perfect soul mate. He didn't care whether she was rich or poor. Servant or heiress. He could care less about things like that. And the only person he could talk to, Aahil, wasn't responding openly to him either. Maybe Rehan's sudden urge to propose was a shock to everyone. Especially because there was already one wedding going on in the house. Rehan shook his head and lightened his mood by imagining how Sanam would react to his proposal.

Of course he didn't know what destiny had in store for him.
*******************************************************************************************************
"Kya?!" Sanam sobbed into her phone. "Konse hospital mein? Main abhi poch thi hoon!" and she ran out her room trying to find her way to the main door while her vision blurred by her cascading tears.

She finally saw the door and hurried towards it but collided hard with someone.

"Arre Sanam dekh ke chalo! Konsi train choot rahi hai tumhari?" a flustered Latif called after her.

It was almost dark outside and this bad news was clawing at her throat, almost suffocating her. She had to make it to the hospital at any cost. She didn't know how she had flagged down a rickshaw, but she had; and within 20 minutes she was standing at the reception in the hospital.

"Main apni Badi Ammi ko doond rahi hoon. Dilshad Ahmed Khan," she breathed.

"Please bathaiye woh kahan hain aur kaisi hain!" she pleaded with the nurse.

"Woh abhi ICU main hain, unko dil ka daura parda hai aur ek laak rupee chaiyye hain unki surgery shuroo karne ke liye. Aap rakam laa den aur hum procedure shuroo kar thay hain," the nurse told her.

"Ek laak? Dekiye main itni bari rakam to abhi kahan se laoon gi? Main chalis hazaar ka intezam kar sakti hoon. Aur kal tak main bakhi ke paise deh doon gi. Lekin please aap surgery shuroo karye. Meri Badi Ammi iss wat bohut khathre main hongi."

"Sorry hum poori rakam ke saath hi start karenge," the nurse insisted.

"Aap samaj kyun nahin rayi hain. Meri Badi Ammi ki jaan chalii jayegi! Aap 40 hazaar rakiye aur main bakhi paison ka bandobast karti hoon!"

The ICU doors opened and the doctor stepped out and Sanam hovered over to him quickly.

"Doctor sahab meri Badi Ammi kaisi hain?" she asked.

"Woh bohut hi nazuk halat main hain. Kya aap paise layin hain?" he questioned.

"Dekiye doctor sahab. Mere paas abhi sirf chalis hazaar hain aur main kal shaam tak aapko puray paise laa doon gi aap please surgery shuroo karye. Please."

"I'm sorry beta. Humari policy hai ke..."

"Agar abhi 70 hazaar den to chalega doctor?" a familiar voice interrupted them.

"Arre Begum Sahiba aap yahan?" the doctor almost bowed before her.

Tanveer stood smiling, she was clutching a silver suitcase.

"Ye lain aur surgery shuroo kaar ye," she handed over the case to the doctor and tapped her foot impatiently.

"Zaroor Begum Sahiba," the doctor scurried off to the ICU.

Sanam began to cry out of relief.

"Begum Sahiba mujhe samaj nahin araha ke main apka shukriya adaa kaise karoon. Apne mujpe iss waqt bohut hi barda ehsaan kara hai. Aapki iss neki ki waja se mujhe meri Badi Ammi wapas  mil jayen gi. Pata nahin main aapka ye ehsaan kaise chukaoon gi," she sobbed.

Tanveer stepped closer to Sanam and cupped her face in her hand.

"Sanam beta tum roh kyun rahi ho. Tum humara ehsaan chuka sakti ho. Ek chota sa kaam hai humme tumse. Bolo karogi?"

Sanam nodded into her hand.

"Soch lo. Ek baar wada karliya to shayad palat na pao," she smiled ear to ear.

"Kuch bi, Begum Sahiba. Main apke liye itna to karsakti hoon," Sanam offered, not knowing what was to come.

"To tum humare bete Aahil se Nikaah kar lo!" There. Tanveer had blasted the bomb. She had hit one theer at two shikars.

Sanam's eyes bulged at the realization of Begum Sahiba's words.

"Nikaah?" she mouthed in a whisper that was barely audible.

"Haan Sanam, Nikaah, woh bi Aahil se."

"Lekin Begum Sahiba, unka nikaah to kal Nida ke saath ho raha hain na?" she asked in confusion.

"Nahin. Woh larki hume bilkul nahin bahh thi. Humara madlab hai ke usne akri waqt pe inkaar kar diya hai. Ab saare mehman ko bi invitation pauhuch gayen hain aur puri tayari bi hogayi hai. Aagar tum ye nikaah nahin karogi toh Nawab khandaan ki bohut beyzathi ho gi. Bolo kya tumhe ye Qubool hai?"

Sanam dropped down onto the chair behind her. This was a heavy price to pay for this favor. But she didn't think she had a way out of it. Thoughts began to race through her mind and she felt sick to her tummy.

"Acha tum aise karo ke sochne ke liye kuch waqt ley lo. Ek ghanta hai tumhare paas. Aur ek aur baat. Aagar tumhe Aahil se koi problem hai to tum sirf theen mahine ke liye Nikaah kar lo...baad mein usse talaq ley lena. Phir tum apne raaste aur woh apne raaste,"and with that Begum Sahiba walked out of the hospital.

Sanam sat frozen to the spot, entangled in a web of confusion. Unfortunately she didn't even have Haya to ask for some advice. She didn't want to marry Aahil for three months. That would be playing with his emotions. It wasn't fair. This wasn't how she was raised. Nikaah was commitment for life. And she didn't know if she was ready for it at all. She hadn't even dreamt of Nikaah since hers had broken off a few months ago. And Nikaah with Aahil? She didn't even know what kind of a human being he was after all. He ran hot and cold and till now she was neither able to understand him nor his fickle behavior. God, she hadn't even figured out what her heart thought about him.

She was so not ready for this Nikaah. But if she refused Begum Sahiba, she might get angry. After all she did pay for her Badi Ammi's treatment and Sanam owed her this much.

But sacrificing her life for another? Yes, her Badi Ammi was more than her life. Of course, she would do anything for that woman who took care of her for all those years in her life, where her parents had left a void. She owed her life to Badi Ammi.

Begum Sahiba came back to stand over her.

"Toh kya faisla hai tumhara Sanam?"

***********************************************************************************************

"Qubool Hai," Sanam spoke. The crowd cheered as a single teardrop slid down her face, hidden from the world by her gorgeous golden dupataa.

"Aahil Raza Ibrahim wal Mohammad Raza Ibrahim, kya aapko Sanam Ahmed Khan se Nikaah Qubool Hai?"

Aahil raised the veil of flowers away from his face. Did he hear that correctly? Sanam Ahmed Khan? Say what?!!

okay dearies here is the next part!!!!!!!!!!
