More than being embarrassed m scared...I live in India, and the lack of women security in India is heart breaking...I never go out late nights...and if i do m accompanied by a male guy (mostly my dad)... never in my life ive been to nightclub or anything at night...
New Year celebration means either going out wid family on 31st, or stayin at home n cutting a cake...and den may be a little party during day on 1st of Jan... Thats not it! Metro is the only safe mode of public transport that i can use...all others r jst scary...even travelling alone, very far in car gets scary at tyms n i always keep it locked wen m driving... Carrying a pepper spray is a must for me! 😲

Even wen I was looking fr a job, any night shift job (wich is d case fr most corporate jobs) was a big NO for me...in fact i had to change my career direction as well bcoz this thing coz MNC r 2-3 hrs away frm home n its unsafe to come late...even if dey r providing cabs... And frankly speaking, more than loving India, I hate it for its evils... 😡

As far as the topic is concerned, fr most ppl here, its jst a news fr u all...u can read it, get embarassed n dats it...Bt for ppl like me, its like living in constant fear fr every day n second of my life...I dont knw whether m safe at any place or not... Sadly, dats just become a daily routine fr most women in India😭

West Bengal: Gang-raped on a platform for the village to see

Dwaipayan Ghosh & Someswar Boral,TNN | Jan 24, 2014, 01.56 AM IST

Cops in Bengal's Birbhum district on Thursday arrested 14 men, including a village headman who had ordered the gang-rape of a 20-year-old tribal woman for alleged sexual relations with a man from outside her community. As tempers flared across the state and another anti-Mamata Banerjee wave over rising gender crime swelled, the chief minister replaced the district police chief C Sudhakar with Darjeeling SP S N Gupta.

Even as the administration claimed it had acted promptly, more gruesome details emerged. Villagers told TOI on Thursday that after the kangaroo court ordered her to be sexually savaged, the woman was placed on a raised bamboo platform so that the gang-rape was viewed by the entire village, children included.

"If the family does not pay up, go and enjoy yourselves," is what headman and now prime accused Boloi Murdy allegedly told the men.

The woman's family alleged she and her lover, a man from a nearby village, were tied up in Murdy's courtyard, where a kangaroo court was held and handed down the punishment " a Rs 50,000 fine for the man and gang rape for the woman. Some villagers told TOI that the woman's cries rent the air all night but no one stepped forward to help her. Even her family, who lives 50 metres away, could not rescue her.

Doctors attending to the critically injured woman said on Thursday they had "clinical evidence" of penetration by several men. The report has been sent to police, said Birbhum medical chief Dr Asit Biswas.

The woman's family was not given even a night's time to arrange for the Rs 50,000. Once the headman ordered rape, it was a free for all. "Among those who raped her were teenagers and some old enough to be her father," said a villager, who was willing to depose to escape arrest. "Almost the entire village " including children " had joined the kangaroo court. All of them hailed it as the correct move," he said.

The village, 60km from Shantiniketan, the cultural and academic hub created by Rabindranath Tagore, is populated by adivasis and has no electricity or school. The administration has always been wary of interfering with tribal traditions, leaving the adivasis to live by their own laws. It saw a horrific humiliation of a teenage girl in 2010 for having an affair outside the tribe. She was paraded naked through four villages and anyone was free to grope her. Although it triggered outrage across the country, the Bengal government wasn't quite proactive. All the accused are out on bail.

Even on Thursday, a day after the gang-rape by up to 13 people, the village didn't show any hint of repentance. The women, in fact, barracked police, insisting the men had done nothing wrong and that the woman had to be punished. The women tried to stop police from arresting the accused and additional SP Prasanta Kumar Chowdhury had to rush in reinforcements. Journalists were barricaded until Santhal outfits intervened.

No less shocking is the attitude of the administration. Police didn't seek custody of the accused"something unprecedented in gang-rape cases. The public prosecutor didn't even turn up in court, apparently because it was a holiday. "We have arrested all the accused in quick time," said Sudhakar by way of an explanation. Despite the prosecutor being missing, the court sent the accused to police custody for 14 days.

No government official"from the BDO to the district magistrate"bothered to meet the survivor's family or visit the scene of crime. Armed policemen milled about the village and some were seen cordoning off the shack in which the rape platform stood, barely 20 feet from the hut of Murdy, the headman.

The villagers threatened to ostracize the woman's family for cooperating with the authorities. "We will never allow the woman and her family to return," cried out villagers. They accused the woman of framing the accused because she was ordered to leave the village if she continued her affair.

"We know that she lived elsewhere with that mason. She made a lot of money. How can we allow the family back? Nothing happened. She made false allegations against our family members because we opposed her illicit relationship," said Panmuni Tudu, a villager.

Bhaju Hembram, who was the headman a few years ago, told TOI that he knew what was going on but since he had "lost his voice" he left without any protest. "What can I do? Now Balai is recognized as the headman," he said. He acknowledged his son witnessed the gang-rape but he, too, refused to say anything.

At Mamata's behest, Trinamool Congress leader Mukul Roy made a formal statement, saying: "The government is firm and will take strictest action against the culprits. It is a social malaise and we shall combat it politically, socially and administratively."

Exaggerated the whole issue ... If a Nation have 2 Billion plus population and democracy is top priority, we can expect such events here and there ... nothing to be shamed ... we have lots of other things to be worried and proud off ... Next decade is more important for us, if everything goes right, it will be challenging for other super power to digest India's rate of growth ...😃

Took up the complimentary newspaper in the bus to read and the only news about India was this gang rape in Bengal.
Seems like all rapists are running around freely and doing as they please. Never seen the situation to be this bad like it is now.

It is actually a reason to be ashamed off. Of course there will be incidents here and there, but if the crime rate keeps on increasing and we fail to curb it, it's a cause for concern and shame. It's wrong to say that there are lots of other things to be worried of... yes there are lots of other things to be worried of, but this is an equally important thing to be worried of - crime in general and crime against women in specific.

And we shouldn't bother about this super power stuff. We should concentrate only on our development. Super power, developed, rich etc. are attributes that will come naturally if we take the right steps to uplift the country.

In larger Democracy, you can't presume Harmony all the time ... you have to understand how our country is different from others, so many altered societies, unalike language, dissimilar religion, the whole demography is dissimilar ... so rape can be transpired because of our lenient attitude and minus of the severe law. At the same time you can't be stringent, when you expect the larger participation in Democracy ...

my Greek colleague(not that his country is great) last night commented when we touched upon issues of rapes in India that he saw pictures of hideous looking men who gangraped someone. And could not believe people who looked that disgusting were capable of raping someone..
God knows what he meant by that exactly or whether it was insensitive comment. I mean if any good looking guy rapes someone would that be less torment?

I'm not presuming harmony all the time. But there should be adequate effort to contain those who wants to disturb the harmony. So that one thinks a hundred times about the consequence before they commit a crime. At present, because of inadequate security and slow investigations, many times the criminals doesn't have to face any consequences. Our nation (especially the administration) is lacking that will to collectively fight crime on a war footing.

And who told you that democracy means you can't have stringent laws or can't implement them stringently? Democracy is a form of governance which cannot take anti-people measures, that is, the government should pay heed to what the people want and run the country accordingly (not that it happens all the time, but that's another debate). So. do you think that common people want rapes to happen and if govt. takes stringent measures against it, people will be displeased?

Madam / Sir... just tell me which is the larger Democratic nation in this Universe ... name it ! I guess you don't live in India ... if we don't compromise in the name of Democracy... Delhi law minister would have been arrested by now for breaking law of the nation ... when you deal with a larger democratic nation, always we have to compromise... that's why we need a Dictator...😉

Largest democracy is the USA and washington says that 1 in 5 women in USA is raped 😕
It cant be just democracy that is to be blamed but the need for people to dominate others, for a feel good factor that is responsible for all the violence and unhappiness in the world. That means that the only way people feel good about themselves is by exerting power in some form or other over others.
