Identical twins result when a fertilized egg accidentally gets split completely/duplicated and forms to separate embryos which develop into babies. They will be completely identical because they are born when one egg gets fertilised by one sperm. They are called monozyogtic twins.Non identical twins are usually a result of more than one egg being fertilized at the same time.In these cases the twins are not identical they are more like siblings who have differences. They are called dizygotic twins.
aparnauma,
the discussion is on whether IDENTICAL twins can look different (monozygotic twins)... so the reference to dizygotic/fraternal twins you have made is irrelevant.Monozygotic twins are NOT completely identical. They have different fingerprints, different teeth prints (unique dental records) and the iris of the eyes is also unique in indentical twins which is why passport biometrics can distinguish between eye records.
