OMKARA IS A GOOD FILM BUT A BAD ENTERTAINER By Pankaj Shukla - Eye TV India Bureau
Critic's I-view
To make film on literature and still be loyal to cinema is not an easy task. Lyricist Shailendra put his all money on the story 'Maare Gaye Gulfam' of Fanishwar Nath Renu to make 'Teesri Kasam', the only film he made as a producer and died of heart attack after it collapsed at box office. But, Sanjay Leela Bhansali won accolades worldwide when he just took the characters of 'Devdas' by Sharat Chandra and made them look modern in his film of the same name.
And, now music director-turned-film director Vishal Bhardwaj attempts the litmus test by trying his hands on 'Othello', the famous drama by none other than Shakespeare. And, this is his second take on Shakespeare after the famous 'Maqbool' that he made on Macbeth. Many people in India as well in the West have tried to build a bond between literature and cinema, but after watching 'Omkara' claimed to have been made on Othello, one feels that the directors better leave literature for its identity, if they are going to make films like these.
First, it's a warning for those who are planning to watch 'Omkara' at the weekend with their families to refrain from doing so. 'Omkara' is agood film if you watch it in the absence of your family members. It's like 'Bandit Queen' revisited where expletive words and dialogues pour in and cross all the limits of decency. For me, I never expected this from Vishal Bhardwaj. And, if Vishal thought that adding these kinds of words is the only way to attract public attention, then he is letting down the entire cast.
'Omkara' moves around Ajay Devgan in the title role. He is 'Othello' of Vishal. He runs a gang of hooligans who control the mob with their muscle power. Omi referred as Omkara in the entire film has two trusted lieutenants: one is Kesu Firangi (Vivek Oberoi), the Casio, and other is Langda Tyagi (Saif Ali Khan), the Iago. As Othello does in the original novel, Omi awards number 2 position in his gang surpassing Langda Tyagi. Tyagi is too devoted to Omi. He cannot digest the fact that Keshu has beaten him in the race of loyalty.
From here Tyagi changes completely and he plans to make life of Omi and Keshu hell. Enter Emilla alias Indu (Konkana Sen Sharma), Tyagi's wife, and he hatches a plan that will sow the seeds of mistrust and jealousy between Omi and Keshu. And for this he makes Desdemona alias Dolly (Kareena Kapoor) his target. Tyagi makes Omi believe that something is cooking on between Keshu and Dolly. The chosen target is hit with a right bang and Omi's anger is about to erupt as a volcano, but he puts a lid on this and the anger seeps out in parts but more dangerously.
As a film 'Omkara' is a masterpiece, but as an entertainer it is not. The film is worth watching for its craftsmanship but not many in the cities of Mumbai, Bangalore and Kolkata will co-relate with the language of the happenings. Vishal Bhardwaj has worked hard on the script with the help of Robin Bhatt and Akash Khurana, but the end result is not as encouraging as it could have been. Maybe the trio was very much influenced by 'Bandit Queen', but they must know how the gang lords of western Uttar Pradesh talk.
They do abuse each other but not like this and women do not use such a filthy language at least with their near and dear ones. Minus the filthy language, 'Omkara' could have been a treat to watch. Having scored already on music tracks, the film got very good opening in the first show, but the word of mouth bad publicity brought the attendance down to nearly sixty percent in the evening shows. 'Omkara' also scores at the creative level in art department and the costume section too needs to be appreciated. Each character in the film is given a different look and the feel. Costumes are apt too.
'Omkara' will also be remembered for fine acting by its cast. This is rare that the entire cast works in tandem and supports each other. If Ajay Devgan shows the vulnerability and task mastery in the role of Omi, it's Saif Ali Khan who in the role of Langda Tyagi complements Omi's character with his evil designs. Saif and Ajay have worked before in 'Kachche Dhage' too, and this pair can be deadly on screen for sure. Vivek Oberoi after a long gets a role that suits his personality and reminds of Chandu Nagre while doing Keshu in 'Omkara'. Kareena Kapoor as a village belle who performs well and looks ready to do everything to get a place in the different cinema. Bipasha Basu is there as a bonus for the viewers.
However, the lady who lasts even after the film is over is none other than Konkana Sen Sharma. She is just superb, be it making the cow dung cakes or taking part in the evil works of her husband. The film has all the north Indian ingredients to make it work in at least in U.P and Bihar. But why the people will come to theatres to see what they watch daily is a question Vishal should have posed to himself before attempting on the look and feel of 'Omkara'. On the whole, 'Omkara' will be remembered as another good work by a brilliant director, but it may not find a place in the hit films of the year. Take care, Vishal if you attempt to make 'King Lear' in future!

By Naresh Kumar - Eye TV India Bureau Isha's Hollywood dream Isha Koppikar is dreaming of entering into Hollywood. After all, she considers herself as good as Aishwarya Rai. Both belong to Karnataka and share the same person as their manager. Simone Sheffield based in New York manages the professional affairs of both. After watching the lesbian role of Isha in 'Girlfriend', Simone had told her that she deserved to be in Hollywood because of her face and figure. This was enough for Isha to dream of Hollywood roles, and she began taking English lessons from Simone. Mohd Rafi's death anniversary Mohammad Rafi is the name that will always remain in the realms of the entertainment industry. He is the topmost singer who sang more than 26,000 songs in his career that are still heard on the lips of Indians spread all over the globe. Mohd Rafi said alvida to his fans on July 31st, 1980, to his friend-music director Lakshmikant Pyarelal. His last words still resound "Ok, now I will leave", and soon the great soul disappeared! His fans do remember him this day every year. They include beggars, eunuchs, drug peddlers, hawkers and vendors. Madhur claims that his movie has sixty characters and some ten of them are the real ones. Though these persons are new to face the camera, they have fared quite well, he adds. Suniel denies quitting Suniel Shetty has denied reports published in a section of a press that he has decided to quit films. Shetty says, "I have been misquoted. In fact, I will continue doing films though I shall not do more than one or two in a year. I have done enough of hard work and need time for myself". The actor said this at the time of completion of the shooting of Dharmesh Dharshan's 'Aapki Khatir'. He continues to take interest in doing movies is proved by the fact that just after 'Aapki Khatir' , Suniel flew to London for the shooting of his movie 'Don't Stop Dreaming' being directed by Aditya Kapor, son of legendary actor Shammi Kapoor. Moreover, Suniel is also acting in Subhash Ghai's 'Apna Sapna Money Money' besides Manishankar's 'Mukhbir', Apoorva Lakhia's 'Shootout...' and most important J.P.Dutta's 'Umrao Jaan', beside others . When asked about his character and the story of the movie Suneil said, "I play the role of a Gujarati boy and Amisha Patel plays my wife. The story centers on five persons - Amisha, Akshay, Dino Morea, Priyanka and I." Paresh Rawal as director/ producer Paresh Rawal who has recently shot to fame and has occupied an important position as a comedy star in the industry is contemplating to enter into direction and production too. Though he has been denying this, he is likely to launch his directorial debut with Feroz Nadiadwala. Besides, he is also trying on the small screen by directing some serials. In any case, Paresh has raised his professional fee. When the heroes and heroines can charge astronomical amounts why should he not increase his price, he asks. Comic monopoly is breaking fast There has never been anybody's monopoly in the film industry. Producers, directors, heroes, heroines, and villains -- all have faded away with the passing away of time. But, the comedians lose their charm sooner than others. There has been a time when Raj Kapoor ruled the industry as a super star. However, he was replaced by Rajendra Kumar, Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan. Similarly, Mehmood once dominated the industry as comic king but soon yielded place to Johny Walker. With the passage of time, Johny Lever took over from Walker and shared the platform with Govinda. Now, Rajpal Yadav is ruling over the industry as the comic king. |

By S. Kumar - Eye TV India Bureau Celina in big banners Now, Celina Jaitley's hands are full with a number of movie offers, including many from big banners. Besides, her last year's hit 'No Entry' and her widely acclaimed performance in 'Tom Dick And Harry' as well as her hit world tour along with Akshay Kumar, Sushmita Sen and Preity Zinta, have lent support to her growing career graph. At present, Celina is acting in Subhash Ghai's 'Apna Sapna Money Money'. As reported earlier, Ghai has signed her for his three more movies. Yes, she is shooting in Vikram Bhatt's 'Red' too. Soon, she will be seen in Suneel Darshan's 'Shakala Boom Boom' with Bobby Deol and Upen Patel. SRK' in trouble Shah Rukh Khan, who is undoubtedly the king Khan and the most popular actor of Bollywood, is indeed in trouble these days as he may lose his status to another actor waiting in the wings to succeed him. Luckily though, there isn't one but many in this race for number one position. They include Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham and Hrithik Roshan. So, SRK is safe in his position for some time until they compete with each other and present a winner as his successor. Has Shah Rukh to yield his place to someone? Rampal prefers to quit Arjun Rampal has declined a movie offer recently. He attributes this to his objection to director Apporva Lakhia's demand to get his hair trimmed. In fact, the movie has been in trouble since its inception. In the beginning, Urmila Matondkar was replaced by Neha Dhupia and then by a newcomer Neha Oberoi. Now, Arjun Rampal has quit it. Lakhia says that he will sign Amitabh, Abhishek, Sanjay Dutt, Viveik Oberoi, Rohit Roy and Shabeer Ahluwalia but is yet to zero in on a girl to play a journo in the movie. Sons to replace fathers in sequel Feroz Khan is very enthusiastic about making or rather remaking though a sequel to his own super hit 'Qurbani' that he made in seventies. He has assigned the main role played by himself in the previous avatar to his dear son Fardeen and that of Vinod Khanna to the latter's son Akshaye Khanna. This will be great indeed! Possibly this will be for the first time that the two sons will play the respective roles of their fathers in a sequel! Who will replace Zeenat Aman is yet to be finalized though. Pakistani actress Meera claims to play this coveted role but subject to the permission from Pak authorities. Feroz hasn't so far finalized any name. Karan's influence in industry Arjun Rampal and John Abraham have readied themselves to oblige their director friend Karan Johar in the latter's forthcoming 'Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna'. While Arjun will play a cameo, John Abraham will act as disc jockey in the company of both the Bachchans and the whole cast of 'KANK', comprising Kajol, Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukherjee and Preity Zinta, in joining the item number to lend their support to Karan Johar. Comedian turns director Comedian Sajid Khan who has successfully acted and hosted TV shows in the past is entering into a new venture. This time he has entered into direction. He is directing Sajid Nadiadwala's 'Hey Baby', starring Akshay Kumar, Fardeen Khan and Riteish Deshmukh. Shankar-Ehsaan -Loy will provide music to the family entertainer. |

BALAN'S LOSS IS AISHWARYA'S GAIN
By Naresh Kumar - Eye TV India Bureau
In the News Vidya Balan of the 'Parineeta' fame has quit her favorite director Rituparno Ghosh' 'Rahgir'. She has been replaced there by Aishwarya Rai. To avoid any further debate as to why she has quit, Balan has been heard pleading that Aish is the fittest actor for 'Rahgir'. Rituparno isn't happy either with Balan's decision to quit his movie. Even the new production company, UTV, isn't aware of it, it is said. Balan is stated to have argued that she is unable to understand the movie character meant for her! Strangely though, Balan has accepted a role declined by Priyanka Chopra in another movie. Priyanka has rejected women-centric movie director Raj Kumar Santoshi's 'Halla Bole' as she had to look a bit older in the character of a mother of a six year old child in it. Priyanka has said no to this matured role that moves around Ajay Devgan. Balan has, however, quickly grabbed it though she has been reportedly declining such roles in the past. For example, Balan had said no to Sudhir Mishra's 'Bahut Nikle Mere Armaan' and recently Rituparno Ghosh' 'Rahgir' on such grounds. |

She is excited because she is the solo heroine in the movie; she is nervous as she has to take the full responsibility of the movie on her shoulders. Initially, she was hesitant to act with a new director and actor, but Shivam Nair's narration removed her doubts. She is happy now due to the involvement of Imtiaz Ali. Besides, she finds the role challenging as she is the only female lead in the movie. The movie is about two people from different walks of life and how their relationship develops slowly. Rekha changed nappies Yesteryears' heartthrob Rekha feels much proud in declaring that she has changed nappies of Hrithik Roshan. "I have brought up Hrithik in my lap for three months when he was a child." Being the close friend of Rakesh Roshan and his wife Pinky, Rekha has changed superstar's nappies. She said this while chatting about today's most popular star Hrithik Roshan whose recent release 'Krrish' will soon be apart of Harvard's curriculum. Besides, his 'Dhoom-2' is coming too. Rekha is reminded about the emotional relationship between mother and son and between grandmother and grandson. Rekha says, "I feel that Hrithik has now turned a complete man from a child when he talks about his wife Suzane, and how much he loves her." Neha & Kunal in 'Haath Se Haath Milaa' Actress Neha Dhupia and Kunal Kapoor paid homage at Mahatma Gandhi's Samadhi at Rajghat in New Delhi on July 15th during the Aids awareness campaign 'Hath Se Hath Milaa'. Fifty volunteers from a Delhi based Flag Foundation joined together to take an oath to pledge his or her commitment to as many people as they can along with Bollywood starlets -Neha Dhupia and Kunaal Kapoor along with the Yuva star Ranjana Bhatnagar. This is to recall that 'Haath Se Haath Milaa', produced by the BBC World Service Trust, in partnership with the National Aids Control Organization and Doordarshan, is viewed by millions across India. Viveik Oberoi, Shilpa Shetty, Fardeen Khan, Raveena Tandon, Tabu, Anupam Kher and Dia Mirza have already filmed for this reality-style series. Sonu Nigam opens studio Sonu Nigam who has so far been known for making experiments in his hairstyles and forays in movies, has this time decided to make a still bolder experiment in his profession by opening a studio for himself as well as other singers. This is indeed the boldest experiment of his life. He has realized the importance of the music industry and foreseen its future prospects much before others could think of it. Blasts concern Salman The recent blasts in Mumbai have concerned Salman Khan as much as any other citizen. He has condemned this act by saying, "No religion teaches you to kill another human being. I come from a family in which we believe in all cultures. I've read the Geeta, Quran and Bible. Nowhere has it been mentioned that we should kill people in the name of religion. I feel sad for people who don't have a mind of their own and are conned into doing this. They are either doing it to impress others or out of fear." He is afraid that it's not easy to revive the earlier spirit in Mumbai, though the poor have no choice. "Going back to work is not easy after you hear such incidents, but what can a poor man do? He has to look after his family and has to work for it. They don't have a choice. They have to face life ahead." |

It was fun to do it: Bipasha By MIO Team Jul 31, 2006, 05:24

|
 | We've seen Bipasha Basu putting her best feet to the item songs and letting the floors in fire. But for Vishal Bharadwaj's item songs 'Beedi jalaike' and 'Namak' in 'Omkara', the setting was something different and though she enjoyed doing the numbers she was nerve wrecked as well. The character of Billo that she enacts in the film, was challenging beyond measure. She had to dress, speak, behave and act differently for the character. She managed these things fine, but when it came to the item numbers there was some uncomfortably on her part. "On the first day when I went on the set to perform the 'Beedi jalai le' song in Omkara, I saw the crowd and I had a panic attack and ran away. I had never seen so many unshaven, unkempt, unbathed and lecherous men in a crowded, sweaty place. It was only later that I got to know that these 'lecherous' men were actually fine actors. They had been preparing to acquire this UP bhaiyya look for weeks. Doing item songs can get very boring. But the ones in Omkara are special. I have the highest regard for Vishal Bhardawaj and even being cast in a small part in his film is an honour. 'Namak' item- song is my favourite. When I heard the song it sounded difficult. And to lip-sync Rekha Bharadwaj's intricate rendition was equally difficult. On top of that, they got a dance-guruji Bhushan Lakhandri, instead of a routine choreographer to choreograph the number. But in spite of my reservations Bhushanji and Vishal had faith in me. I pulled it off. The other song 'Beedi' just happened. It was fun to do it," she says. |

|
New Delhi, July 31 (IANS) The music of Karan Johar's "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna" is creating the right mood for the film's release with the title song perched firm in the top slot for a month now. The top 10 Hindi film songs of the week are: 1. "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna" - Film: "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna"; singers: Alka Yagnik and Sonu Nigam; music: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. A sad and touching number, the song is on most listeners' lips. 2 "Bidee" - Film: "Omkara"; singers: Sunidhi Chauhan, Sukhwinder Singh; music: Vishal Bharadwaj. A rustic item number that hit the right chord with music lovers in the cow-belt area. 3. "Chand Sifarish" - Film: "Fanaa"; singers: Shaan and Kailash Kher; music: Jatin-Lalit. A naughty and romantic number, the song remained on top of the charts for months, but is slipping now. 4. "Ya Ali" - Film: "Gangster - A Love Story"; singer: Zubeen; music: Pritam. A favourite Sufi song with listeners, it has entrenched itself properly on the music charts and is moving up. 5. "Dil Na Diya" - Film: "Krrish"; singer: Kunal Ganajawala; music: Rajesh Roshan. The album was not an instant hit but the success of the film has increased its sale and the song has moved up a notch on the music chart this week. 6. "Teri Yaadon Mein" - Film: "Killer"; singers: Sonu Nigam, Tulsi Kumar; music: Anu Malik. The film bombed but the song's popularity is keeping it in the news. 7. "Junoon" - Film: "Rocky - The Rebel"; singers: Amrita Kak, Himesh Reshammiya; music: Himesh Reshammiya. The energetic and high-voltage song has entered the chart on the seventh position. 8. "Aashiqui Meri" - Film: "36 China Town"; singers: Himesh Reshammiya, Sunidhi Chauhan; music: Himesh Reshammiya. New releases have overshadowed this fast-paced number, which is losing its popularity. 9 "Golmaal" - Film: "Golmaal - Fun Unlimited"; Singers: Anushka Manchandani, Vishal Dadlani; music: Vishal-Shekhar. A youthful song with a funky tune, it is quite popular with teenagers. 10 "Lamha Lamha" - Film: "Corporate"; singer: Asha Bhosle; music: Shamir Tandon. A sad number sung by Asha Bhosle, it ruffles up the listener's emotions. |

"Phir Hera Pheri" - Director: Pankaj Vora. The film's success has surprised trade analysts. Viewers immensely enjoy the antics of Paresh Rawal, Akshay Kumar and Suniel Shetty. 6. "Fanaa" - Director: Kunal Kohli. The movie survived because of its pre-release controversy otherwise it has nothing to keep the audience hooked for three hours. 7. "Chup Chup Ke" - Director: Priyadarshan. The first half of the movie is hilarious with Paresh Rawal and Rajpal Yadav's chemistry being the highlight of the comic caper. 8. "36 China Town" - Director: Abbas-Mustan. The Shahid Kapur-Kareena Kapoor magic is fading away and the movie has nose-dived. 9. "The Killer" - Director: Hasnain S. Hyderabadwala, Raksha Mistry. A rip off of Michael Mann's "Collateral", the film is a complete let down. 10. "Tom, Dick & Harry" - Director: Deepak Tijori. Another comedy, which didn't get a good opening, is running on word-of-mouth publicity. |

Needless to say Irrfan Khan's dialogues sounds tremendously appealing due to his baritone voice. But there is something more to his voice. Guess what? Actually Irrfan can sing too. Those who already like his voice have another reason to fall in love with it. This facet of his voice came to be known only recently. He has already sung two songs for Mukesh Bhatt's 'The Killer' that appear in the climax of the film, reviving the yesteryears classics 'Zara saamne toh' and 'Lag jaa gale'. He got the chance to get behind on the mike when on the sets director Raksha Mistry heard him signing and she has overwhelmed by it. He was a bit hesitant to sing the song but at last complied with her wishes. The outcome was just killing! |

"I'm in talks with directors and producers but nothing is finalised as of now. I want to be remembered at the end as a good character. I'm not caught up with playing a main lead in the movie. I haven't really been away from cinema per se. I've been doing films in the South meanwhile. I'm currently shooting for a Marathi film and another Bhojpuri film. Today there are so many genres and kinds of films. An actress like me would find it much easier to find a place in mainstream cinema today than she would have a few years back," she says. |

Maddy to be seen in Sunglass, not Suri By MIO Team Jul 31, 2006, 05:24

|
Actor R. Madhavan has replaced Sanjay Suri in Rituparno Ghosh's bilingual 'Sunglass'. The film will start shooting from next week and this was the last minute change made to the film. Sanjay Suri has been earlier signed for 'Sunglass'. But Sanjay had some reservations about the character after hearing the script. The demand of the character was a man with 'mischievous smile, a naughty flint in the eye and a devilish demeanor.' Maddy suited the role perfectly and he agreed immediately to do the role when approached by Rituparno. Maddy will now be joining the shooting after wrapping up his schedule for Mani Ratnam's 'Guru'. He will leave for Kolkata on July 31 to start shooting for Sunglass. Madhavan is very excited about the film and says, "It's just my luck that I had the required dates because another project of mine got cancelled. It's not just the temptation of working with Ritu. It's the entire team. I've never worked with Naseeruddin Shah, Jayaji and Konkona. I saw Konkona in Omkara, she's amazing. And we'll make a great pair. Plus, I have never done a bi-lingual before." |

Interview : I'm not remaking 'Johnny Mera Naam': Dhawan
|
|
Director David Dhawan, who loves making comedies, is amused by the latest story of another re-make, this one being attributed to him. 'No I'm not doing a remake of 'Johnny Mera Naam'. There is no truth to this at all,' Dhawan told us. 'If we are talking remakes then I'm doing a remake of my mentor Manmohan Desai's 'Amar Akbar Anthony' next year for the Tips production house. That commitment is signed, sealed and delivered. It'll star the three Khan brothers - Arbaaz, Salman and Sohail - in the roles played by Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna and Rishi Kapoor.' David gets into the 'Amar Akbar Anthony' mood after he wraps up 'Partner' for Sohail Khan next summer. Talking about 'Partner', he said: 'The project has been delayed because of Salman's dates. He couldn't shoot for a long time. And when he could, he had to give priority to Shirish Kunder's 'Jaan-e-Man' and Ravi Chopra's 'Baabul'. These projects were nearing completion and had to be given priority. 'Salman had shot for 'Partner' for just two days. We'll finish it next year and move on to 'Amar Akbar Anthony',' said Dhawan who is all set to move away from the mirthful mood. 'Nowadays everyone is making a comedy. In November, I am doing a film for UTV, which is a complete departure from my comedies. 'It is a powerful feel-good subject written by Renzil d'Silva (who co-wrote 'Rang De Basanti'). The minute I heard it, I decided I had to do it. It takes me into a territory that I haven't been before.' The film's main protagonist is a 22-year-old guy. 'The hunt is on for the right face. I can't make the film with the wrong cast,' said David. |
