Bipasha : The body language says it all

A picture can speak a thousand words. And what words may not clearly state, is being said through body language. Look at the images alongside. Either Bips looks thoroughly bored, or is trying hard to force a smile when posing with her man John.

Bipasha Basu too tall for Emraan

Bipasha Basu, who was approached for Kangana Ranaut's character in Woh Lamhe refused the role because Emraan Hashmi was cast opposite her.

It was not Emraan's kissing images that troubled her but it was just that she thought she would look taller and bigger than Hashmi.

"It's a fabulously written script. After a long time, a strong role was coming my way, essentially a woman-centric film. The only problem was the pairing."

    Look! Bips-Zayed on the run

Braving the bright sun and dry weather, Bipasha Basu and Zayed Khan are on the run in Pondicherry. They are running on the streets, by the seaside and everywhere possible. And making them run is their good friend and filmmaker Rohan Sippy.

"It's fun to see them run all around. Usually we are running around, now it's nice to see the actors running when you say so," filmmaker, Rohan Sippy says.

    DNA
United colours: John Abraham and Bipasha Basu at the special screening of 'Corporate.'

United we stand: Bipasha Basu and John Abraham
    After Hours Correspondent
    Friday, July 07, 2006 20:26 IST

The occasion was the special screening of Madhur Bhandarkar's 'Corporate' in Andheri, but the star attraction turned out to be something entirely different.

The film's leading lady Bipasha Basu made an entry with John Abraham — their first public appearance together since reports of their breaking up surfaced — and cornered all the attention for whatever little time they were present. But neither stayed back for the screening at Cinemax.

In fact, Bipasha had come down from Dimple Theatre in Pali Hill — where she had seen the film with John, her family and some friends — just to congratulate Madhur for the way the film has shaped up. When they arrived at the multiplex, the couple was apparently caught unawares by the posse of photographers present at what was supposed to be a private screening.

In fact, John (who didn't quite seem his normal smiling self) was heard chiding the shutterbugs, "Aap log photo to kheench lete hain, par likhne waale kuch bhi likh dete hain." With John by her side, Bipasha was in great spirits. But if John's body language was any indication, he seemed a tad aloof and distracted.

The past few weeks have been tough on Bipasha, who has been rubbishing all reports of trouble in her personal life.

"I'm upset with the rumours. John and I are very much together. I've always been open about my relationships, but now I'll only speak about my work. And I'll retaliate if anyone tries to mess with me," she said in a recent interview to Zee Muzic.

All along, John himself has maintained a studied silence on the issue. And now there is talk that the couple has decided not to buy the flat they'd booked in Vaikund building on Mount Mary Road in Bandra. So was it just a lover's tiff, now resolved? We're certainly hoping so.

John ko buri nazar lag gayi: Bipasha

9 May 2006 10:53:17 John may have recovered from his recent Kabul illness and bike accident, but girlfriend Bipasha admits she's still worried about him.

"When you're close to someone, you're bound to get affected. Knowing the business both of us are in, we can't afford such setbacks.

At this point in his career, he needs to be constantly on the go. An accident is a freak happening. Anything can happen, anytime. "

    Evil eye

The actress says she believes in buri nazar, "When I started my career, I used to get fan mail in hordes, raving about my eyes. Then, over a period of one year, I often had eye infections.

After that, I started believing in "nazar". Maybe fans' appreciation works in a weird ways; that's my mother's belief. And I believe everything my mother believes."

Bipasha thinks this is true in Abraham's case. "People love John. Maybe nazar lag gayi. Uski bike ko to definitely nazar lagi hai… but I'm sure fifty per cent of the people are with us. With success and popularity, we're bound to have rumours and bad press. If we can't handle it, we shouldn't be part of the entertainment industry."

She is impressed by John's attitude to success. "John has had too much adulation, in too little time.

He doesn't know how to cope with it. He's loved by people like crazy; fortunately, he remains down-to-earth despite being so successful." And Bipasha herself? "I'm very down-to-earth. I cannot be with a man who is starry."

Talk veers to John's role in Deepa Mehta's Water. "He's so adorable in Water. He has fitted in very nicely. From his biker-in-a-ganji image, he has got into his Gandhian khadi look, effortlessly. There was an unstated chemistry between John and Lisa Ray, which I loved."

    Smarter choices

Meanwhile, Bipasha isn't in a hurry to sign films. "I really don't want to do only realistic roles. I have to balance them with glamorous roles, to satisfy myself and my fans as an actor. So, along with Corporate, I'm very happy shooting Abbas-Mustan's film.

They introduced me five years ago, in Ajnabee. Now, they can see the change in me. Today, I'm an actress — five years ago, I didn't know what I was doing. I've become a little sharper in the last two years."

"Now, I only do those films that will get an audience. Even when I do a realistic film, it will have to be with a big filmmaker. Earlier, I was too shy to do so, but today, if I want to work with a particular director, I can go and ask him for work. But for this, I must genuinely like a director's work."

    Ritu's Draupadi

She's all set to work with Rituparno Ghosh. "I want to do Draupadi with him. I've grown up hearing tales from the Mahabharata, and Draupadi is my favourite character. People say I'm too westernised to play Draupadi, but I know myself. This is one thing that Ritu and I are definitely doing together."

My marriage with Bipasha inevitable' : John Abraham

John Abraham has bought a new home, and no it does not mean that the Dhoom star is getting ready to tie the knot with Bipasha Basu though he says they would love to get married - their respective careers willing.

Talking about his new home in Mumbai's Bandra Bandstand, John says: "It's right in the middle of Shah Rukh and Salman Khan's homes. Nice to have an Abraham between two King Khans, don't you think?"

"I'm getting a terrace constructed into it, so I can have story sessions at home," he confesses shyly.

So is this part of the preparation to finally marry Bipasha?

John laughs, "I wish it was. Though we both firmly believe in the institution of marriage and would love to get married, our respective careers have taken off in a big way. I see Bipasha being extremely busy for the next couple of years. She has now begun to sign big banners and top-line projects including Dhoom 2.

"In any case everyone knows we're a couple. We've never pretended to be 'just good friends'. So marriage would just be an inevitable conclusion to a relationship that's common knowledge. More than love, I respect Bipasha. It would be my greatest joy to marry the woman I love and respect."

John takes great pride in his woman's sudden and startling weight loss. "Bipasha works even harder than me at the gym. Her energy and drive just zap me. She's completely made over. Bipasha has just begun her second innings, and so have I."

Understandably John is said to be very upset about not being part of the Dhoom sequel. "I can't pretend I didn't want to be part of Dhoom 2 . Abhishek and Uday are such lovely boys. Working with them felt like one big family. I felt the same again while working with Ajay and Vivek in Kaal ...I'm too happy to see Bipasha working with Abhishek and Uday, and of course with Hrithik Roshan who's such a great guy himself."

John is very excited about the rewards of Dhoom . "It has undoubtedly been a turning point for me. I got my first Indian popular award for the performance. I think doing a villain's role is so tough.

"But even tougher is comedy which I'm now doing in Priyadarshan's Garam Masala with Akshay Kumar who has repeatedly proved how good he is at comedy. If I can swing this, I know I've arrived. Because to me comedy is the toughest aspect of acting."

Right now, John is looking forward to Deepa Mehta's Water , which releases in November. "I learnt to play the flute, and wear a dhoti for the film. But the best part of working in 'Water' was that I got to interact with the amazing Waheeda Rehman who is arguably the most beautiful actress of our cinema. She's so full of experience, and life. Her zest for living is exemplary.

"Such experiences are helping me to wade in different waters. In Ravi Chopra's Babul I get to do full-on masala film for the first time. It's a great role... And I don't care who all were approached to play Rani Mukherjee's second husband. I grabbed it the minute I heard it. I'm also looking forward to Milan Luthria's song-less thriller which Ramesh Sippy is producing. It was earlier called 'Ittefaq'. In terms of screenplay it's as innovative as Mani Ratnam's Yuva . It's got me and Nana Patekar in two parallel stories running in real time. I am choosing my projects very carefully. No false moves, I hope. And no mo'bikes. I've got to zoom on."

The fan following grows. "I've this terrible habit of jumping into the middle of fans. I get too excited. I've to curb that tendency. I know it's too dangerous. But I feel the fans will feel cheated if I distance myself."

About the tepid response to his last release John explains, " Karam wasn't half as bad as some of the other new films. It was slow, yes. But it had layers of meaning which came out as you watched the plot unfold. Both Bipasha and I are comfortable doing unconventional films. But we've to move on. I'd love to do a Karan Johar or a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film."

John Abraham and Bipasha Basu GOT MARRIED

This has also been the week of Abhishek Bachchan and Amitabh, and Aishwarya Rai, also John Abraham and Bipasha Basu. In the golden days of Bollywood, two actors in love were a couple, today they are an item. And in those days when such a couple wanted to get married, after doing several successful movies in which the chemistry between them was obvious on screen and which made the box-office tills ring, they went ahead and quietly got married. There was no media involved. The only photographers allowed to shoot the bridal couple were those hired by their respective families. There is no better example of this than Amitabh's own marriage to Jaya Bhaduri. And Dharmendra's to Hema Malini. Today, the song-and-dance preceding the yes-they-are-no-they-aren't weddings, is jarring. And soon movie buffs and Mumbaikars will say, so what, if Abhishek wants to marry Aishwarya and John does not want to marry Bipasha, then let them… but get off the front pages of newspapers please.
Likewise, this is also Sourav Ganguly's week, and how he must have looked forward to it, and Navjot Singh Sidhu's. Ganguly's return to Team India is a slap in several faces… we don't want to mention names, of course, but yes, one that will come to everybody's lips is Greg Chappell's. The dour Indian cricket coach must not like the way things are turning out for him, but good for Ganguly, he has worked his way back into the team not politically… but through hard work at the nets and in the gym. We hope he comes good this time, because nobody else is living or playing upto expectation, not even our Sachin Tendulkar – who will soon be running out of sympathy for his back and his elbow and his other problems. And this is Sidhu's week, this has to be the most terrible joke of his life, he finds himself convicted of a murder charge that he was acquitted off some 18 years ago. The man, we must say, is honourable. The first thing he did – and even before the Punjab and Haryana High Court awards him his sentence or he considers going to the Supreme Court in appeal, is offer to resign his BJP MP's seat from Amritsar. We don't know whether the bawdy and gutsy Sardar is guilty as charged, and whether he indeed was responsible for a killing as a result of a road rage incident, but we admire this spirit in him. Imagine, not wanting to tarnish the BJP's image. We can think of some other people who will go to hell and come back, and still expect to be welcomed into the party fold with open arms. Apparently, politics is not always the last resort of scoundrels...

Bipasha and John had a great on-screen chemistry in Jism and the film too did reasonably well. Moreover after Jism everyone wanted to see this hip and happening couple on-screen together again. They did do a few films together, but nothing really clicked. Bips and John, now an off-screen couple will soon be seen together on-screen after a break of three years. Bips and John will be seen together in Vivek Agnihotri's film Goal.

After Jism, Bips and John were offered several films together but nothing really caught their interest. Bips was keen that she would only work with John in a film that had an interesting script and one that had an unusual role for her. The two of them will be seen together in a film after a long break of three years and hence there are bound to be huge expectations and hopes. Audiences will definitely want to witness that sizzling chemistry between these two hot and sexy stars. Both Bips and John have agreed to do Goal, a film based on football. Bips says "The script of Goal has been narrated to me and yes I am very keen to do it. However I have yet to sign the film, but yes it is very positive and there's a definite chance that I will do the film." Bipasha is well aware that audiences will expect a lot from their film as they are an off-screen couple too.

Recently their were rumours about the Bips-John split, but the couple have been seen together happy and content on several occasions and now are all set to do a film together, thus putting to rest all rumours of a split. The reason why Bips has agreed to do Goal is because she is extremely excited about her role in the film as it is different and she has never done such a role before. She says "The role I have been offered is superb, the character is that of a Pakistani girl and I haven't played such a role before." Bips claims that they will have to create a new kind of chemistry between themselves as she admits that off-screen couples are under tremendous pressure when they do a film together.

However recently it was heard that Bips and John may do Rituparno's Mahabharat epic film together, but nothing more has been said on that front. So hope fully Bips will sign on the dotted line soon and once more we shall get to see this magical couple on-screen together creating their own magic

    'I don't think I can have kids'

    By Subhash K Jha

Bipasha has come back from Toronto a richer person. "After a long time I made a really close friend. She's actually John's friend. But after a long time I made truly good female friend with whom I can remain connected without a sense of rivalry.

One can't do that in Bollywood. We've made big plans to meet up and have fun. I've my own equation with John's friends, as he has with mine. It isn't as though we HAVE to be friends with each other's friends. It's just fortunate that we like each other's friends."

Bipasha misses Kolkata. "I enjoy my vacations there. But I can't live there. Of course Puja in Mumbai isn't quite the same as Kolkata. So I don't miss having my family around. But yes, I did enjoy Puja in Kolkata earlier. Now it gets too crowded and my dad gets tired out. The crowds are uncontrollable.

So it's no longer fun. But now I've my entire family in Mumbai, including my elder sister whose husband has just got a job transfer from Bangalore. So my entire family of parents and siblings live just a stone's throw away from where I stay."

Bipasha grows reflective. "As you grow older you really look for your roots. At 17 I felt great traveling alone and making my way around the world. But then family begins to catch up. I've been away from them for too long. I need my family close to me specially since I don't allow too many people to come into my inner circle."

A new development in Bipasha's life: she has been, in her words, rewarding herself with vacations. "For years it was just New Years. But Now I indulge myself on holidays when I feel like. I just went to the Toronto film festival with John. It was a lovely experience.

Toronto is such a beautiful city. I had been there earlier for work only. Of course I went because I got to spend quality time with John. But I got a chance to make some genuinely great friends in Toronto."

Tell her that John hopes to make loads of money to pay for their wedding and honeymoon and Bipasha smirks. "Oh please! I don't believe in lavish weddings. It's a criminal waste of money to call so many people who are genuinely not interested in my life.

Better to invite only my genuine circle of friends…However there's loads of time before the wedding happens. And trust me, everyone will know when it happens."

Right now Bipasha is scared of marriage. "I love kids. But right now my nephew whose parents are setting up house in Mumbai, is staying with me. And I'm scar-r-r-e-d to even think about having my own kids…

Right now parenthood seems like the most difficult job in the world. I've told my sister my nephew is enough. I don't think I can have a child of my own for a long time."

About her rather ugly run-in with the Independence Day parade in New Jersey Bipasha says women being harassed isn't peculiar to high-profile women. "But because we're celebrities such incidents get played up.

But funny things happen to women all the time, whether we admit it or not. And those who think such things happen only to me because of the image that I have, I question their intelligence level. These things could happen to anybody, yaar. It's life."

Speaking of her last release Bipasha lights up like a naughty bidi. "I really enjoyed my bit in Omkara. I got to work with a great director. I love Vishal Bhardawaj. Omkara will always be special to me. Beyond Omkara I haven't signed anything.

I've two films with Abbas-Mastan, one with Sanjay Dutt and Ajay which is almost complete, the other with Saif which will start soon. There're three other offers that I'm considering seriously. There're twenty other offers which I could've taken up at this time of my career. But I don't want to.

It isn't necessary to work every single day of the year. I don't want to have 11-12 trashy releases per year. Whatever is offered is not what I'm always happy with. Now I'm looking forward to going beyond Dhoom 2, spending time with my family, my boyfriend and just relaxing."

Bipasha irked over split up rumours
    [ 1 Dec, 2006 1036hrs ISTIANS ]

VERY MUCH TOGETHER: Actress Bipasha Basu is furious over rumours about problems in her love life. (TOI Photo)

MUMBAI: Bipasha Basu is angry over rumours about problems in her love life, saying she and boyfriend John Abraham didn't need "endorsements" from people to prove they loved each other.

Recently, she walked the ramp with John for designer friend Rocky S.

"I think people should just stop speculating about my relationship with John. They said I was looking bored on the ramp and trying hard to cover it up. If I'm not seen with John, it's a problem. If I'm seen with John, it's a problem."

"Walking the ramp with John was a normal experience. We do it all the time. And this was for our dear friend Rocky. Both John and I can never say no to Rocky. Otherwise, walking the ramp is nothing exciting," Bipasha said.

"The kind of messages we got from friends and fans saying how good we looked together, was just so heart warming. I guess John and I being together just don't make an exciting story. Now, it's more exciting to say we're splitting.

"But let me tell you John and I am not the kind of people to put up a front. We didn't walk the ramp together to prove to people that we're together. We've enough confidence in our relationship and we don't need endorsement from the outside. It's ridiculous! If our split makes news, then there's nothing much we can do about that."

Reacting to stories about how she's 'clinging' to John, Bipasha retorts: "John is my boyfriend. Who else will I cling to? Certainly not to some other girls' boyfriends?

"Such headlines irk me. I don't understand what John and I can achieve by walking together if we aren't together - More work? More individual popularity? No! What's the point? I'm the kind of person who doesn't pretend about anything in life.

"If the relationship ended, I'd never go on pretending it was on. Both John and I are too honest and too popular individually to use this relationship for more popularity. Neither of us needs to cling to each other."
