Shortly after Rahul's birth, while roaming his kingdom, prince Siddharth once saw a very old man, barely able to walk. Next time, he saw a terminally ill patient, & next time saw a funeral procession.

He started thinking that I can do any number of things in my life as a human & as a king, but if its known that sooner or later I'll grow old, fall ill & die, what is it in all this for me??

This actually is a question dealt in detail in Vedanta that a man can do anything in life, but if he fails to reach the lotus feet of Lord through true devotion (bhakti), his human existence will ultimately be a waste.

Anyways, so disturbed was prince Siddharth with these questions that soon he left his beloved wife yashodhara & his new born son Rahul sleeping, in the dead of the night, & went to forest & stated meditating.

Then there are a lot many instances in his life, which I think you'll see in the new serial.

Ultimately he got answers to his questions while meditating under a Bodhi tree.

And then spent the rest of his life telling about his experiences & what according to him is the best way to enlightenment, to his numerous disciples.
