The word nazar or evil eye has a malicious significance in Indian households and so is Nazar utarna or getting rid of the evil eye especially so when a baby is around. Your child is always the cynosure of everyone's eyes. It is a common belief that when a person stares at something/somebody and it gets harmed, he is said to possess an evil eye. However, a person laying an evil eye might not want to do it intentionally or may not necessarily be wicked. Usually, when a child is crying incessantly without any apparent reason or is not eating well or is showing signs of discomfort, that usually such things are practiced.
Here are a few totkas / remedies to ward off the evil eye effects:
' If your child has an evil eye cast upon him/her, wave some salt over her/his head and toss it into the fire or water. This is also one of the most followed techniques for nazar utarna.
' Another common widely followed way is to wave red whole chillies over the affected child and throwing them in the fire. People are usually heard of saying that if the smoke smells of chillies, then the child was not affected by an evil eye or buri nazar. But, if the smoke does not smell of chillies, it is said that the child was indeed troubled by the evil eye and it has been warded off.
' Babies are usually adorned with kajal (kohl) under their eyes or on their foreheads. There is a common belief that this actually mars their beauty and makes them look unappealing to the evil eye.
' A small pocket knife, an iron piece or religious charms are kept by the baby's side to protect him/her.
' Bits of pottery from a burial ground, tooth of a crocodile or a tiger's claw at one's homes are popular charms said to ward off the evil eye in India.
' While walking down village roads, you might often find beautiful designs inscribed and engraved on stone slabs. Apart from added attraction, these also help in warding off the evil eye.
' Small mirrors are also sewn or braided together and are said to reflect back bad energy.
Indian superstitions apart, here are a few interesting ways in which the evil eye is cast away in other nations:
Italy: Little olive oil is poured into a water vessel. If the oil on the surface takes the shape of eye, then the victim is believed to be cursed with the evil eye. Prayers are chanted till the droplets of oil no longer create the shape of an eye.
Europe: Charcoal or burnt match heads are tossed into a pan of water. If they float, then the baby is considered to be the victim.
Ukraine: Molten wax is dripped from a candle into a pan of water. It is believed that if the wax splatters, or sticks to the sides of the bowl, then the victim is under the malefic eye. When the wax sinks to the bottom of the vessel, the victim is declared healthy.
China: A six-sided mirror is hanged on the front door to annul bad energy. This procedure is followed in Feng Shui as well. Mirrors are often used as a cure to negative energy.
Saudi Arabia & Middle East: In countries following Islam, the evil eye is called Dajal. Prophet Muhammad had forbidden the use of talismans or remedies to get rid of the evil eye. They believe that praying to 'Allah' or God is their ultimate solution. Muslims believe that a sentence should always be remarked with a 'Masha Allah' or 'Tabarakallah' to ward off the evil eye.
