There's been a lot of hue and cry about sharing of profits by actors..here are a few points:
1. IT IS PROFITS NOT TURNOVER: I would have understood if they demanded a share in turnover but this is "profits"...the terms are different...it's what the producer makes above his costs
2. BRAND VALUE: you and I might think of JTHJ as a YRF production but for most people it will remain an srk-kat movie...as a movie goer what appeals to us the most is an actor...a lot of unconventional movies have done well in the recent times but the brand value an actor brings is undoubtedly high
3. REDUCTION IN RISKS: why do producers agree? coz movie making is a risky business..a contract which has profit sharing as a clause will have a reduced fixed remuneration...applying probability the risk on the producers gets reduced
4. UNFAIR TO WHOM: the actor is not eating into anybody else's shares...the crew and technicians are being paid exactly what they were getting before...it's a manipulation of an actors fees between him and the producers...nobody is getting affected...they aren't cheenofying anyone's rozi roti
5. NOT CONFINED TO ACTORS: ar rahman raj kumar hirani ashutosh gowarikar all take a share in profits...it's not that big a deal
