Delhi Safari Review (Delhi Safari Movie Poster)

Rating: 2.5/5 stars (Two-and-a-Half Stars)

Voice cast: Govinda, Akshaye Khanna, Boman Irani, Urmila Matondkar, Suniel Shetty and Swini Khara

What's Good: The humour; the dialogues; the very apt voice casting.

What's Bad: The unnecessary songs; the forced melodrama; the hurried climax.

Loo Break: None.

Watch or Not?: Watch Delhi Safari some really funny dialogues and a change from the regular mythological animation.

Earlier in August, a satire site had posted an article about the state of the animation industry in India which said, "If I have to watch one more show reel filled with baby elephants, round-eyed tiger cubs or plucky street urchins, I'm going to slit my own wrists." Unfortunately, Delhi Safari isn't exactly an exception to the rule, but it's not exactly slit-your-wrist material either.

Threatened in their own habitat after the death of the leopard Sultan (Suniel Shetty), the animals in Sanjay Gandhi National Park decide to migrate. But Sultan's young son, Yuvi (Swini Khara) grapples at one last chance to save his home. The plan is a bit far fetched: they want to reach Delhi and voice their grievances to the Parliament. For this he brings together to a makeshift group of animals from the forest: Bagga the Bear (Boman Irani), Bajrangi the monkey (Govinda), Sultan's widow Begum (Urmila Matondkar). But none of the animals can speak for the humans to understand their predicament. So they coerce the parrot Alex (Akshaye Khanna) into joining them.

Bajrangi's DNA might be close to that of humans, but the mischevious monkey wants to ensure that the animals do not talk to humans. If that isn't enough, the monkey and the parrot get on each others' nerves at every possible chance. And Alex is with them more out of force than choice and is just biding his time to escape.

What happens to this strange Delhi Safari?

Delhi Safari Review: Script Analysis

There's nothing special about the story or the screenplay by Nikhil Advani, Girish Dhamija and Suresh Nair. It's Milap Zaveri and Girish Dhamija's dialogues that do the trick mostly. The exchanges between Alex and Bajrangi are a riot. In fact, it's Alex and Bajrangi's characters that stand out in the film.

Otherwise the script and story is quite a yawn. There's not really much of a "safari" in the movie with the only memorable (and funny) spot being the one in Rajasthan with the Marwadi flamingoes/bustards doing a synchronized dance/garba! The climax is rushed while some of the scenes of the elder Sultan are shameless rip-offs of Disney's The Lion King. The characters remind you of Kipling's The Jungle Book too.

Delhi Safari Review: Voice Artists, Direction, Music & Technical Aspects

Govinda (as Bajrangi) and Akshaye Khanna (as Alex) are no doubt the stars here. Their bickering and their dialogue delivery is really the winner. Boman Irani (as Bagga), Urmila Matondkar (as Begum), Suniel Shetty (as Sultan) and Swini Khara (as Yuvraj) are alright.

Director Nikhil Advani has done a good job with the film but he should have added more of humour and less of the forced melodrama. Most of the songs are quite unnecessary; only the one where the flamingoes/bustards burst out dancing and singing in Marwari looks nice. The animation is alright, except that Alex seems to have fur rather than feathers. The 3D is a waste. Aarif Sheikh's editing is good. Songs by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy are forgettable; Tubby-Parik's background score is ordinary.

Delhi Safari Review: The Last Word

Delhi Safari is a welcome change from the regular mythology/modern-take-on-mythology. Though it may not match up to international standards, the humour element and Alex-Bajrangi make it an enjoyable watch.

Delhi Safari (Movie Review)

Critics Rating - * * * & half

What it is – If you think the movie is only meant for children, no you are wrong in-fact every Hunter, Minister, Builder and Social Activist should first go and watch the movie. The film teaches you that don't just shout and do the campaign for Save Animals and forest, if you are really concern change your attitude towards animals. Stop troubling Animals and their territory by every mean possible. It is about Save Animal Save Forest and So Save the Humanity. The Director Nikhil Advani has given his best shot to make the child film a worth watch for every age group.

The monkey is as sly as a fox, the bear is as cool as a hippie and the queen leopard is as elegant as a supermodel – the animals in Delhi Safari leave you awestruck

Nikhil Advani, the director of Delhi Safari claims that it's a film made for children and it intends to educate them about the plight of animals because of us humans. But honestly, it's a must watch for adults too. It's preachy in a creative way and the decent animation is sure to keep the grown-ups hooked on to the screens.

The only hitch is the songs – a major put-off. When the story is riveting and the characters are super interesting, we don't see the point of having intermittent tracks in between, it somehow ruins the flow and the fun of watching a movie that has all the potential of being a feel-good flick.

So this tale is about a leopard family that is happy in their own wild world. It's one of those families that live together and hunt together, and the lush green National Park is their comfortable abode. But the cruelty of human beings and their materialistic intentions ruin the life of these wild inhabitants. A bullet goes straight through Sultan's (the father leopard and the head of the jungle) torso, leaving his wife and cub devastated. And that's how a revolution begins, with the cub (Yuvi) motivating the other cynical members of the jungle to prevent their natural home from getting razed to the ground.

How an enthusiastic bear, a street-smart cub, an elegant queen leopard and a sly monkey head to Delhi along with their interpreter Alex (the parrot) to make humans realise their wrongdoings, is what the story is all about. The adventurous trip-for-a-cause taken by these determined animals and the kind of challenges they face on their way makes the film an interesting watch – sans the songs of course, as we said before.

The cub Yuvi looks amazingly cute with his tawny-brown hair and hypnotic puppy eyes, the perfect character chosen by the director to create the awww feeling inside the hearts of the audience.

The celebs seem to have gone completely ballistic while lending their voice to these well-etched out creatures. While Urmila fits perfectly into the shoes of the elegant wild cat, Akshaye Khanna surprises us with his humorous and hoarse parrot pitch. Govinda's Bhojpuri language gives us the giggles and Boman Irani – the bear – struts around in his stylish fedora, lending a very sophisticated feel to the hairy creature's voice.

All-in-all, Delhi Safari is a fun flick and the animation is sure to not make you pucker up your noses. With a riotous expedition and a fun story to boot, the movie is an interesting watch for children and adults alike.

Delhi Safari
By Taran Adarsh, 17 Oct 2012, 08:26 hrs IST
For some strange, inexplicable reason, animation movies have not been embraced warmly by Indian moviegoers, although the last two movies [ARJUN THE WARRIOR PRINCE and KRISHNA AUR KANS], both 2012 releases, had some gorgeous images to offer. Now DELHI SAFARI makes an earnest attempt to match up to the toon flicks served by Hollywood. Also, this one's in stereoscopic 3D.

DELHI SAFARI goes beyond the boundaries of a "cartoon film" and attains a much elevated status. There's humor, there're sad moments, also songs, witty one-liners, loads of excitement and fun, but along with the joy and amusement, DELHI SAFARI carries a message: It raises its voice against deforestation and protection of wildlife habitat. In fact, the message is hammered well in the final moments of the movie. Clearly, DELHI SAFARI is not merely an attempt to delight the kids, but grown-ups as well.

A thunderous noise breaks the silence of the national park. A closer look reveals the jungle has been raided by man and machine. Sultan, the king, tries to fight a futile battle and ends up losing his life. The animals discuss their fate of losing their habitat to human beings. Everyone is convinced that it is futile to fight humans and the only option is to leave and move to a safer home.

The hot-headed monkey, Bajrangi, wants to declare a full-scale war against humans. But Bagga, the bear, has a more civilized suggestion. He believes that all problems could be sorted out through peaceful discussions. So the best way to get back their homes is to have a dialog with humans. The problem is, no one can speak the human language. The pigeon recommends Alex, the talking parrot, who can come to their rescue. Yuvi, Sultan's cub, Bajrangi and Bagga decide to kidnap Alex from his luxurious golden cage. However, their hope turns to despair as Alex hates animals. Loves humans.

The journey to Delhi begins. A motley group of animals travel across India with a message. A message that they discover not only plagues their homes, but the homes and lives of thousands of other animals on the way.

DELHI SAFARI has several brilliantly stylized sequences, like the one at the very outset which brings back memories of THE LION KING. The fight with the hyenas in Gujarat and the wild chase by honey bees, which results in a roller coaster ride, also knock you off your feet. In fact, it's a treat devouring these portions in 3D. Conversely, the leisurely pacing [at times] and a few unwanted songs and sequences act as roadblocks. The culmination - the Prime Minister promising to address the issue - could've been persuasive. It seems abrupt.

DELHI SAFARI takes giant strides as far as animation goes. Of course, we still have a long way to go before we match up to the Hollywood standards, but you can't deny that the efforts are getting superior. In fact, I'd go to the extent of saying that DELHI SAFARI is the best animation film to come out of India. Besides, notwithstanding the hiccups, it's cleverly written [screenplay: Nikhil Advani, Suresh Nair, Girish Dhamija], has smart and witty lines [dialogue: Girish Dhamija, Rahul Awate, Milap Zaveri] and is delightfully rendered in 3D.

Advani has roped in reputable actors for voiceovers. Akshaye Khanna [parrot], Govinda [monkey], Boman Irani [bear], Suniel Shetty [leopard], Urmila Matondkar [leopard] and Swini Khara [cub] add credence and authority to the on-screen characters. Prem Chopra, Saurabh Shukla, Sanjay Mishra, Deepak Dobriyal and Girish Dhamija have done the voiceover for other characters.

On the whole, DELHI SAFARI offers something new on the platter. There's ample for the kids, but there's enough for the grown-ups as well.

Review: Delhi Safari is a fun film

Movie poster of Delhi SafariRohit Khilnani feels Delhi [ Images ] Safari [ Images ] is a must-watch.

Though many Indian studios have tried their hands at animation in the past, Delhi Safari reaches the closest to a good quality 3D animation entertainer.

Kids, who enjoyed the Madagascar series and even Jungle Book, will enjoy Delhi Safari because there are a lot of things in the film they can relate to, like the popular Sanjay Gandhi [Images ] National Park in Mumbai [ Images ], names of other Indian cities, Hindi movie dialogues and even the mention of the popular Indian news channels every now and then.

Delhi Safari, directed by Nikhil Advani [ Images ] is a joy ride that will take you on a fantasy trail from Mumbai to Delhi. It also sends an important message of protecting animals, a message many NGOs and government agencies are finding hard to spread. And this is where the medium of cinema does the job best.

The story that starts at Mumbai's National Park where a builder encroaches in the forest to construct a housing complex, promising homes close to nature. The close proximity to nature obviously comes at the cost of cutting trees and even killing animals.

Thus starts the journey of a leopard, her cub, a monkey, a bear and a parrot for justice. They decide to take on the builder by going to New Delhi and protest in front of the parliament in the presence of the media.

Despite the predictable song-and-dance and even the story, Delhi Safari works as the train journey from Mumbai to New Delhi has a few of stops and fun moments that fit well into the plot.

Funny as it may sound, Govinda's [ Images ] voice for Bajrangi the Monkey is just perfect. The actor, known for his comic timing makes you laugh even with his voice.

Boman Irani [ Images ] as Bagga the Bear also works well as you can make out that the actor has put in effort to perfect the many moods of the bear.

Suniel Shetty [ Images ] and Urmila Matondkar [ Images ] as male and female leopards and Akshay Khanna as the talking parrot are not bad either.

Although the songs in the film do pop up more often than needed, the film, overall, signifies the progress Indian films have made in the animation genre.

The animation team at Krayon Pictures and the writers Nikhil Advani, Suresh Nair and Girish Dhamija deserve a pat on their backs for the sincere attempt they put in making Delhi Safari a fun film.
