Review: 'Heroine' is absolutely Kareena's film, not Madhur's

Review: 'Heroine' is absolutely Kareena's film, not Madhur's
Wronged lead protagonist. Check. Cheating lover. Check. Clinical depression. Check. Manipulative friends. Check. Homosexuality. Check. Rising and then eventually falling and slowly fading in career. Check.

These are the main ingredients of each and every Madhur Bhandarkar film. And 'Heroine' is no different really. After giving an insight into the world of Fashion, Page 3 media and Corporate world, Bhandarkar delves into a territory which is perhaps the most familiar to him - Bollywood.

Bhandarkar narrates the story of a shining actress Mahi Arora (Kareena Kapoor) who seems to be slowly losing her sheen all thanks to her personal life and erratic mood swings. Even though Mahi is considered the best in the industry and is the reigning queen of Bollywood who everyone wants to compete with, Mahi seems to be more interested in getting married to her boyfriend, superstar Aryan Khanna (Arjun Rampal). Aryan, meanwhile, is going through a divorce and remains non-committal towards Mahi, which leads to her downfall.

Wronged by the people whom she is most close to, Mahi seeks psychiatric treatment and plans to resurrect her career and her life. While she manages to re build her image, get a new boyfriend (Randeep Hooda), sign some fabulous endorsements and also some films, Mahi realises that to be at the top of the game, she needs to compromise her own morals and ethics and leave behind people who probably care for her the most.

The premise of the film, like every other film of Bhandarkar, remains the same. Lead protagonist who has negative shades goes through the highs and lows in her life, enjoys a period of success and then goes through a low phase only to reform and rebuild herself as a human being. What Bhandarkar shows is not new to most of us; it is just presented in a snazzy, glamorous way.

The film could easily be written off but for Kareena's performance. As the bi-polar, erratic, insecure and vulnerable fading star, Kareena gives a superb performance. She looks beautiful, glamorous and makes Mahi her own. In fact, some of the incidents seem to be lifted straight out of Kareena's life (yes, there is an MMS scandal as well). Kareena, who has for a long time been used as a glamour quotient in Rs 100 crore films, gets a meaty role and gives it her best shot. Some of the scenes in the film, although a bit unnecessary, need courage to be enacted and it comes as a surprise when a hard-core commercial actress like Kareena agrees to do such scenes. And then, does them so convincingly.

Arjun Rampal, as the confused, non-committal, playboy Aryan Khanna, gives a believable performance. It is also refreshing to see Randeep Hooda play a charming cricketer madly in love with Mahi, especially after doing a dark role in 'Jism2'. The man though, is underused. In fact, Madhur manages to cast some very talented actors like Shahana Goswami, Ranvir Shorey and Sanjay Suri in walk away cameos who ably support the film's narrative.

The film has a very linear narrative and for the greater part of the first half, one keeps wondering what exactly the plot is. A little bit of editing would also do a lot of good to the otherwise predictable storyline.

Does 'Heroine' work? Yes, but only because of Kareena Kapoor. From doing the raunchy act in 'Halkat Jawaani' to the scenes where she is battling depression and popping pills, to the confident I-don't-care-attitude of a confident actress, Kareena makes Mahi memorable and lovable.

One little request to Mr Bhandarkar; when the next time you use gay characters in your films, please don't make them so obviously effeminate. All gays aren't like that.

Ratings: 2 for the film and one extra one for Bebo. Three cheers for the film!

Saw the movie Heroine last night.

The movie before the interval was good but after the interval there were a lot of ups and downs. Coming to that a bit later.

*spoiler alert*

At somewhat the beginning of the movie, they try to show someone doing a story on her so it made me think she dies at the end of the movie tragically so this female presenting her life is trying to take us on a journey of how she got to that point. But after watching the entire film I was wondering who that lady was. And why was that part even there? That's one thing I didn't like about the movie.

Also, when she was playing the character of a prostitute and she has a "lesbian moment" with her co-star. It was just really bizarre to me. In the end, when she's showing something to her PR agent, I almost thought, that's what she's going to release as a scandal. Or I was expecting the co-star to come back and be her friend and support post-scandal. None of that happened so that whole bit was just like a random thing thrown into the script for no reason.

The other being the ending. With the way the movie was going, one would expect either a happy or a sad ending. But the movie had a rather dull ending. It ended up giving rise to more questions and leaving you with a sense of, "what the hell happened?" and not in a good way. It was disappointing.

The good thing about this movie was that Kareena did some convincing acting especially as a drunk, pill-popping, cigarette smoking actress. But then Kareena has always been good at emoting. But almost every character in this movie was smoking in almost every scene. It was a little too much. Also, because there were so many ups and downs in the movie, you don't get to relate to Kareena's character. You are just along for the ride and hoping for the best.

The first half of the movie was pretty good. It started off with a bang. Arjun Rampal's role is very similar to his character in Om Shanti Om initially. But it's also very confusing towards the second half. When Kareena asks him if she's still a heroine in his movie, he doesn't tell her either way even though he fought for her to be in his film. When she leaves angrily he decides to call the producer/director of the movie and put his foot down about Kareena acting opposite him. He could have easily done that in front of her or at least be honest with her when she was questioning him. So I didn't understand why that scene took place the way it did. Also, when Kareena wasn't picking up his call, he could have just sent her a text message. It's really that simple. lol.

*spoiler over*

I feel this movie is going to do fairly well but will probably get mixed reactions. Mostly disappointed with the ending because it's senseless. Also, all the famous dialogues of this movie have already been covered in all the trailers so it doesn't pack as much punch in the theatre when you've heard it so many times.

Kareena might get awards for her role but the movie could have been MUCH better. This was certainly NOT Kareena's best movie (script-wise).

Kareena Kapoor's birthday gift: Heroine releases today

It's finally that day. Kareena Kapoor's much discussed and awaited Heroine releases today. The movie depicts the life of a heroine in B-town - the challenges and the triumphs, the despair and the glory. It promises to be role of a lifetime for for it's star who turns 32 today, and we can think of no better birthday present.

Madhur Bhandarkar has a resume of thought-provoking films (read Chandni Bar, Fashion) and, going by reviews of early birds who have already seen the movie, this installment is shaping up to be another feather in his cap.

Heroine began on a false note when original star Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was announced her pregnancy and was dropped from the movie despite having launched it in grand fashion at the Cannes Film Festival last year. Her ouster was the cause of much debate and discussion on whether actresses were allowed to have personal lives and the feasibility of introducingno pregnancy clauses in their contracts.

According to Kareena Kapoor, playing the role of Mahi Arora in the movie has been her "bravest" so far. She's already got a rare thumbs up from her strongest critic, sister Karisma Kapur, who was reduced to tears by the movie and couldn't praise Kareena's performance enough.

The movie is said to be based on real events and borrows from the lives of stars such as Preity Zinta who used to visit theatres playing her films in a burkha, just like Kareena's character does in Heroine. Kareena Kapoor accepted the role as she felt she could relate to Mahi Arora. "I always take challenges when it comes to performance oriented roles and Heroine isn't something that I could have missed," said Kareena Kapoor in an interview.

The movie also stars Arjun Rampal and Randeep Hooda in important roles. "I am excited about the fact that the love story between the characters played by Kareena Kapoor and me is very different. Actors do say this all the time but when you watch the film, you would see that for yourself," Arjun Rampal told PTI.

Heroine has been religiously marketed and promoted across India, with Kareena Kapoor attending various reality shows on TV, road shows and campaigns.

Kareena has already drawn praise with her item number in the movie, Halkat Jawani. Heroine is already being compared to Vidya Balan's The Dirty Picture, another film that charted the rise and fall of an actress and one that led to Vidya being spoken of as the "fourth Khan."

Whether Heroine will do the same for Kareena Kapoor remains to be seen, but the ghost of Aishwarya, for one, has long been laid to rest.

Great review, very detailed! I tried not to look at it too close coz it contains spoilers, so I read most of the ending.
So what are your final thoughts on the film? Not how it will do, but personally, would you call this a bad film, a good film, an average film?

Heroine won't affect Barfi: Anurag Basu
Anurag Basu More Pics
It is the week that is now being called as the Clash of the Cousins.

Kareena and Ranbir Kapoor would lock horns at the cinemas near your home to bite off a larger piece of the box office collection. While Kareena's Heroine is reportedly being released in around 1500 screens, Ranbir's Barfi! has been having a ride of the time with impressive first week collection; even though the movie was released in only 600 screens.

In an exclusive conversation with TOI, the Anurag Basu couldn't hide his astonishment over the overwhelming response to Barfi!.

The director, at his honest best, shared that he didn't expect a grand response to Barfi! "I was not expecting such tremendous response. In fact, when we conceived the idea to make Barfi!, we thought to make it 'cost-effective' and we made in Rs. 35 crore. I am pleasantly surprised and humbled by the success," confessed the director.

Ranbir has been appreciated by the audience for mutely expressing his heart out. "Ranbir was the first and last choice for the film. He is effortless as an actor and was truly Barfii during the film. Before the shooting started I took Ranbir and Priyanka through workshops, but later we just did the shooting part, so if I say we worked hard, then I would be lying," chuckled Anurag.

Kareena Kapoor is leaving no stone unturned to make sure that her much-anticipated film Heroine rings the bell at the box office. So, will Heroine slow down the process for Barfi! which has already managed to cross Rs 50 crore mark? "I don't think Barfi! will be affected by Heroine. Both are different films and there are audience for all kinds of films," answered Anurag.

'Heroine' a big test for Bhandarkar, Kareena Kapoor

This Friday will evaluate the staying power of two big Bollywood brands

Mumbai: This Friday, the staying power of two Bollywood brands will be evaluated. One is Brand Kareena. The other is Brand Madhur.
Kareena Kapoor, who plays the lead in the 21 September release Heroine, will be testing her ability to ensure a healthy box-office opening for a woman-oriented story. The movie's director, Madhur Bhandarkar, will find out if he still holds his position as the preeminent chronicler of our angst-ridden times.
Bhandarkar is a genre unto himself. He's certainly not the first director to have explored social problems, but he is one of the most high-profile chroniclers of middle-class anxieties about a range of topics, from the advance of women in the workplace and unequal social status to increasing Westernization and a weakening of the law and order machinery. It is a given that Bhandarkar's films will rattle the status quo despite the fact that he is a card-carrying member of the film establishment.
"It is an overwhelming feeling to see how much support I have from the audience," Bhandarkar said. "Whether I am a brand or not, I have no clue. But yes, I have created a separate space for myself and people have accepted my films with open arms."
Bhandarkar's grittiest film, Chandni Bar (2001), about the depressing life of a bar girl, came early in his career, but it's his later sensational works, notably Page 3 (2005) and Fashion (2008), which have lingered in public memory. Bhandarkar is in the mould of N. Chandra, the late 1980s director who directed such fiery hits as Ankush, Pratighat and Tezaab before fizzling out. The filmmaker, who assisted Ram Gopal Varma before making his debut with Trishakti in 1999, has voiced consternation about the perceived erosion in moral values in a rapidly changing, globalizing society. Page 3 expressed shock at the seamy underbelly of Mumbai's high-society, Satta 2003) highlighted political corruption, while Fashion wallowed in the dirt beneath the ramp. Heroine is about "the rise and fall of a superstar", Bhandarkar said. The movie will look at the film industry with the grimness of Sunset Boulevard rather than the fondness of Rangeela. The role of Mahi Arora was initially offered to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, but she dropped out of the project after she became pregnant. Will her loss be Kapoor's gain? "Kareena brings in every mood of Mahi Arora to the table," Bhandarkar said. "Kareena is a spontaneous actress and she picked up Mahi's character so well that by the end of it all one could only see Mahi and not Kareena."
The typical Bhandarkar formula is to pick up newspaper headline'he was trending before the word was invented'and to mount the cinematic equivalent of a sting operation. The formula has been the most successful for films like Page 3, Bhandarkar's morally righteous but also heavily topical expose of upper-class hypocrisy; Corporate (2006), about wrongdoings in the upper echelons of business; and Fashion, which pokes around the powder rooms of designers and models. Most of his modestly budgeted but highly visible films have been produced by Percept Picture Company. UTV Motion Pictures bet on Fashion (it netted Rs.30 crore), while UTV Disney will release Heroine across 2,400 screens.
Bhandarkar's last exercise in social critique film, Jail (2009), flopped, according to the online industry tracker Box Office India, while his maiden attempt at comedy, Dil To Bachcha Hai Ji (2011), was an above average grosser (it earned Rs.28.47 crore at the box office).
Still, brand Madhur might be somewhat dented, but it is by no means defeated. "Madhur's standing is such that anybody will be willing to bankroll his films," observed veteran trade analyst Vinod Mirani. "He's like James Hadley Chase, who changed the profession of his characters but followed the same story graph. Madhur picks topical subjects, he is not expensive, and he produces his films within budget."
"Also, he manages his publicity well."

😊...this was my expression throughout the film...sometimes cz I was enjoyin it n sumtimes cz it was unintentionally funny.

The story has nothing new for it except that Mahi has clinical problems unlike Meghna or Silk. Madhur...I felt has made a KHICHDI...here... which has taste variations every time u take a bite (lol pardon my crap analogy).

Bt thats wat he has done...in order to do better den fashion...he just took some shocking moments n compiled them together...saying this is the reality of bwood...like where is the flow dude????

the editing was leggit bad...like who did they hire...shirish kunder 😆

Now performance wise...I kno i mite b minority bt Divya dutta was too cocky here, usually I love her bt here she seemed desperate to get sum limelight on herself by trying too hard

Arjun was ok.,,,never liked him before n still dont 😆 Randeep was good...again y do dey give him such LESS screen time...I liked him n bebo together 😳

Dialogues were good bt not clap worthy like TDP...lolll I kno cant help bt compare
Music was dissapointing like I sooo wished dey had a nakka mukka kinda numbr to beat up the tempo n play it in critical situations

Best thing here was BEBO.,...she was awsome...even with this repeatitive script...she managed to get in the charachter n perform...esp in the last 20 mins or so
👏

The only concern was...charachter seemed too vague n forced...n blame goes to writer who made the charachter sooo complex for no darn rsn...sumtimes simplicity speaks more (like barfi)

So yup its one time watch...u guys shuld see it if ur a bebo fan n if u aint got nuthin to do this weekend lol

I didnt wanna criticize the film bt its just maybe my expectations were so high cz MB said its one of his best wrk n bebo was confident too sooo mayb dats y m finding more flaws...

Kareena has completely done wat was told her to do...so she has given 100%...problem is the script n the pressure of making a master peice that has to b better than TDP or Fashion
