As Gunjan
arrived in Morena a vibe of joy sprang to the entire city. Everyone greeted her
warmly and she too was happy to be there. She had missed every nick and corner
of her city. It seems like she has returned after ages but still she could feel
the warmth of her people intact.
Her family
was on cloud none seeing their daughter after so long. Her family consisted of
mainly her parents. Mr and Mrs Bhushan. But she has always been close to her
extended family as well. A close bond
was formed between them. Gunjan was treated as the chief guest and why wouldn't
she be, she was the apple of their eyes. From the cuisine to the decoration all
was of her choice as if it was her own wedding. After the meet and greet
session Gunjan enjoyed the delicious food, and having eaten almost everything
that was on the table excused herself and went to her room to unpack.
After a
while she sat on the bed exhausted. Enjoying the breeze, she felt calm and
peaceful though she was worried for Samrat and SM but still she had a belief of
positivity. She smiled to herself thinking of him. He was not as bad as he
poses himself to be she thought and her smile widened. His cute antics were a
treat to watch. The way he asked her to go and enjoy the weeding was
commendable not even knowing that mom was trying to make him understand that he
needs to go with her and this made her sad. Her smile vanished immediately and
she made a face. How much she had wished and hoped for Samrat to come with her.
Even if she had the slightest hope that he could join her now. But what if he
didn't liked her family? Or her city? The preparations only could be loud and
irritating for him, leave alone the wedding. She shook her head in dismay as he
was not going to come anyway.
"Tou hamari beti yahan Samrat ko yaad
kar rahi hai haan?" Her
mother's voice made her brought her back to Morena.
"Nahi maa bas asey hi..., she trailed off.
"Asey hi nahi beta kuch tou hai. Acha
lagta hai na wo?"
"Maa. Wo kon wo?" Gunjan avoided her mother's gaze as
her cheeks turned to a heated colour trying to hide it.
"Wohi beta ji jisne apki
galon(cheeks) kay eh haal kiya hai?". Teased her mother.
"Nupur kahin nazar nahi a rahi kahan
hai?"
"Tumhari aadat nahi gayi na baat
badlne wali? Koi baat nahi Samrat badal dega. Sahi kaha na?"
"Aap bhi na Maa."
"Main bhi kya huh? Bas beta meri tou
yehi dua hai ke tum aur samrat hamesha khush raho. Aik doosre k saath raho."
"Jiii. Apko koi help chahaiye?"
"Nahi nahi beta sab ho gaya hai bas
sham ko tayaar rehna aik chota sa function hai. Waisey bhi asal hungama tou kal
se shuru hoga."
"I am so excited maa. Kal mehndi phir
sangeet..shaadi aur reception. Kash meri shaadi bhi..." She looked away without completing
her sentence.
"Gunjan beta tumhein tou pata hai ke
sab. Khair chodo tum khush ho na yehi bohat hai hamara liye. Aur waisey bhi
meri jaan purani baatein yaad karne se kya milega ga? Dukh ke siwa?"
"Ji."
Gunjan gave
a weak smile to her room and after resting for a while went to get dressed for the
evening. The hall was beautifully decorated with lilies, fancy lights and other
bright coloured stuff. The ambiance was quite festive making her feel the
jitters of the weeding. She smiled to herself seeing her cousins arguing over
who was to perform. There was no main event but just to do the final rehearsal
for Gunjan her cousins had arranged a pre
mehndi ceremony'.
Everyone
settled down for the performances to begun. Gunjan enjoyed a lot, swinging her
head to and fro and as the music grew louder. The smile on her face was evident
from her eyes. That spark, that shine made her parents adore their little one.
With teary eyes, they smiled staring at her with love and adoration. They were
happy seeing Gunjan so cheerful. It seemed life has finally returned to her.
Gunjan
herself shook a leg on random songs with her fellows. Laughing, teasing and
cheering was all going on. The house was set on fire. It truly looked like the
wedding has actually begun. Only the premiere is yet to begin; the mehndi and
sangeet. Whereas the actual wedding and reception will be like The Oscars.
Gunjan
changed into her night dress and laid down to sleep but she couldn't. Despite
being so tired sleep was nowhere. Anxiety kept her awake for a bit after which
she dialed a number on her phone.
Samrat.
"Hey,Gunjan kaisi ho? How was today's
function?"
Gunjan
smiled hearing to his voice. It just felt good.
"Theek hoon aur aap?"
"Acha hoon and don't worry mom bhi
theek hain. Gunjan
heaved a sigh of relief.
"Aur kya kar rahe thay?"
"Kuch nahi yaar abhi office work
khatam kiya."
"Hmm."
Gunjan felt odd.
Yaar' is a diversional word. She didn't knew why she felt weird.
"Hum friends hain na?"
"Haan hain kyun?"
"Nahi wo actually tumne mere "yaar"
ko sahi se receive nahi kiya na."
"Sorry Samrat mujhe aadat nahi hai
isiliye."
"Apologize karne tou nahi kaha."
"Phir?" The innocence of her voice made
Samrat smile widely.
"Tumhe pata hai tum bohat innocent ho."
"Acha maa bula rahi hai baad mein
baat karte hain."
"Oh hello mujhe kya roadside romeo
samjh rakha hai?"
"Nahi tou."
"Madam aap meri lawfully wedded wife
hain girlfriend nahi jo maa a gayi tou phone rakh do."
"Ji..."
Gunjan
blushed hard. Her cheeks turning to crimson red. Embarrassed she was lost in her
thoughts when she heard Samrat on the other side wishing her good night.
"Good night."
Gunjan barely
managed to say. She is a wife. Samrat's
lawfully wedded wife. Finally their relationship was moving ahead. There was
something substantial to look forward to. Gunjan slept peacefully after a long
time. No nightmares for today. At least her present will not haunt her for a
while now. As she always wanted it to be ,her life was finally smooth. No
complications. Hopeful for the future and smiling in the present a satisfied
Gunjan had her covers on and went into her dreamland like a baby.
...
The next day
went by quickly and finally the mehndi night was on. Embellished with different
kinds of flowers. The view was delightful. The fairy lights were on position on
the center stage to be lit as the performances would begin. Everyone had their
best clothes on but what Gunjan looked was out of the world.
She came
downstairs in a yellow coloured lehnga with the dupatta tugged on her left
shoulder. Her makeup included eyeliner, a bit of kohl and lipstick. She kept in
minimal. She accessorized her look with jhumkas and a simple golden coloured
chain. Her hairstyle completed her look which was a messy fishtail braid
delicately styled on her right shoulder. People adored her as she descended
from the stairs. Looking absolutely majestic.
The bride
and groom were brought into the hall and they seated next to each other ready
to enjoy the event. Or maybe to witness the cold war that was about to start.
It's Groom vs Bride. The famous competition between these two sides.
Performances began and people supported their own teams. All the popular mehndi
songs were played.
Suddenly,
Gunjan felt a feeling of isolation gripping her. Seeing all the couples enjoy
and dance she missed something in her life. Something vital.
Although they were not a typical couple but
still she wished him to be here with her. His mere presence could cheer her up
at this moment.
The music
took her by surprise.
Tu ho
gayi one to two
Oh kudiye what to do
Oh ho gayi munde di
Tu turu turu turu..
"Samrat??" Gunjan looked at
him shocked. He twirled her round. But she was numb...bewildered to see him
there. In front of her eyes.
Dacing!!
Patanga
vargi
Tu ainwayi udd di
Oh ho gayi munde di
Tu turu turu turu..
Hila de chaldi
Tuk tuk tu Kardi
Make up tu kardi yaar..
Angrezi padhdi
Ghit pit tu kardi
Jimme queen saadi Victoria
He pointed towards Gunjan
while lip sing the song.
Tu ghanti big ban di
Poora London thumakda
Oh jaddo nachche pehn di
Poora London thumakda
Tu ghanti big ban di
Poora London thumakda
Oh jaddo nachche pehn di
Poora London thumakda
He took Gunjan's hand and here they were on
the stage. Staring in each other's eyes.
Lathe di chadar
Uthe honeymoon kar maahiya
Aavo saamne, aavo saamne
Tera ki size hai ve das maahiya
Malmal da kurta
Dikh da hai sab kuch clear maahiya
Tere saamne, tere saamne
Lagda hai chhota palang
maahiya..
Gunjan's cousins and friends surrounded the
two and teased them through the wordings of this peppy song. Gunjan looked down
and bit her lower lip, to avoid her cheeks from turning further red.
(Oh siyapa..)
(Oye hoye hoye
Death hi ho gayi..)
Loudspeaker te, Madonna vajdi
Ho like a virgin
(Aithe utthe kehndi)
Trafalgar de
Kabootar vargi, O meman phir di
Gootar goo kardi
Gulabi shade da, rang hai firangi
Rakhi tu saanw ke aar
Saanu te lagta, Southall toh changi
Jaga koi nahi hai badiya
Samrat danced with all the
zest making her look nowhere else but him. Making her smile and admire him all
the more.
Tu ghanti big ban di
Poora London thumakda
Oh jaddo nachche pehn di
Poora London thumakda
Samrat brought a new energy
with him and everyone enjoyed that.
Tu ghanti big ban di
Poora London thumakda
Oh jaddo nachche pehn di
Poora London thumakda
Oye...
Sir pe gilassi rakh.. London thumakda
Punjabi style vich.. London thumakda

Gunjan also shook a leg
with Samrat taking in all from the moment. Losing herself.
Thumakda thumakda
London thumakda
Thumakda thumakda
(Oye wah ji Wah..)
Gunjan got embarrassed on realizing that all eyes were on her and stopped immediately.
Tunakda tunakda
Tumba tunakda
Tunakda tunakda..
Oye Oye oye
Oye Oye oye..burrr...
Oye shava...
