A dumb date

Hannigan and Campbell in Date Movie
Date Movie
*
Dir: Aaron Seltzer
Cast: Alyson Hannigan, Adam Campbell

Plot: One fine morning, you wake up to see your favourite rom-coms a la Bridget Jones's Diary, Pretty Woman, and Sleepless in Seattle DVDs turned to dust by some warrior.

In this case, Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg of Scary Movie fame get their claws out on some date movies. What follows is a dumb and juvenile pastiche of sorts.

The story begins with an "I'm so ugly" gal (Alyson) knocking at Dr Hitch's door in hope of grabbing a virtual Prince Charming. After a major face-lift, courtesy, a bunch of garage mechanics, screwdrivers and hollow pipes she goes sauntering around with Mr Gorgeous (Adam), who lost his virginity to the household maid. Just before the happy marriage, the couple need to overcome a constipated cat, quirky parents, a big-butted wedding planner and a busty belle.

Acting: Alyson Hannigan in her bubble avatar evokes occasional laughter. Honestly, she engages in squinting her face, bring a ripple on her nose and a forced smile.

That's it. Coming to Adam, he can never match up to Hugh Grant or Ben Stiller. His sissy portrayal of Julia Roberts, too, appears to be in bad taste. However, Coolidge looks convincing as the Jewish mom who probes into her daughter-in-law's parents' sexual life.

What's hot: What can be entertaining, is the guessing game that you indulge in and pat yourself for every right movie you name. Otherwise, references remain obvious and you know what to expect as the film unfolds.

What's not: Be it the hairy, farty or the bathroom jokes, they lack novelty. The very idea of rolling out a grand spoof piecing together bits and pieces of a bunch of potboilers has become quite stale. The crass images are unbearable.

Just when you thought that the movie's over you're dragged to some forbidden island where husband and wife are rolling a film on King Kong tickling his beauty.

Bottom-line: If you care for juvenile and brainless comic crap you might end up with a giggle burst. You'll be better off if you stay away from this fare.
