Actors Ranvir Shorey and Vinay Pathak have been part of India’s evolving comedy scene long before social media took over the conversation. Known for their sharp humour and memorable collaborations, the duo has seen firsthand how audiences react to comedy across different eras.
In an exclusive conversation with India Forums, they addressed a question that keeps popping up today. Has comedy become more offensive now, or has the reaction to it simply become louder?
Then Vs Now: Has Anything Really Changed?
Shorey believes the perception has shifted more than the reality. While outrage today feels immediate and widespread, he suggests it is not entirely new.
"People were always getting offended."
Vinay Pathak was quick to agree, adding, "Always, yes."
From Legal Notices To Online Backlash

Vinay then added, "Yes, now it is just visible a lot more. Back then, when we were doing The Great Indian Comedy Show on Star One, we used to get letters, registered letters from other production houses with stamps which acted like legal letters and notices."
The difference, according to them, lies in how quickly and widely those reactions now spread.
“It Just Feels Louder Now”
Shorey explained how social media has changed the scale, not necessarily the nature, of outrage.
Ranvir added, "Nowadays, there is just more volume to it, so there is more visibility to it."
He further said, "Now it is just the internet and social media amplifying all this more so it feels more immediate and feels more in volume. But it has actually always been there. People getting offended is a disease that has afflicted human beings since time immemorial. "
Their perspective cuts through the nostalgia and noise. While platforms have changed and reactions travel faster than ever, the core idea remains the same. Comedy has always pushed boundaries, and someone, somewhere, has always taken offense.

Is comedy outrage actually worse today or just louder?
Actors Ranvir Shorey and Vinay Pathak say outrage in comedy isn’t new. In an exclusive conversation with us, recalling The Great Indian Comedy Show days, they reveal even then people got offended and sent legal notices. According to them, social media has only amplified the volume today, making backlash feel louder, more immediate, and far more visible than before.
