The Spiral Staircase: A Perspective

So I was reading Karen Armstrong's biography "The Spiral Staircase" again and I came upon the last chapter where she interprets the first part of T. S. Eliots' Ash Wednesday as talking about her life and lifes struggles. Reading it I was reminded forcibly of Arhi and their relationship so I thought I'd share my view and help explain the circles these two keep going in and try and define just how beautiful it is in its tragedy.

I wont quote the poem because every one has their own interpretation of poetry, but it was the explanation that Armstrong gave for the verses that really got to me.

"I toiled round and round in pointless circles, covering the same ground, repeating the same mistakes, quite unable to see where I was going."

Arhi like Armstrong are covering the same ground like one does while climbing a spiral staircase. the ground, the steps, the actions all seem repetitive but the situations have changed even though the principal character are repeating the same mistakes they dont realise that they are still going up as they can not see what comes at the next turn.

Their relationship and it's dynamics have changed even if they dont realise it and act the same, say the same things.

The poem starts with the famous verses "Because I do not hope to turn again, I do not hope." this shows the hopelessness that the spiral staircase brings but thats the beauty of it. you feel that you can not go on and at every turn you believe that you have reached THE turn of conversion which completes the spiralling circle but you are wrong as the staircase can only take you higher and higher and not stay in one place.

Similarly we believe that every turning point in their relationship will be THE moment but it's not that easy. a love like theirs has to struggle up and beyond for it to reach it's culmination in to legend. THATS what has us hooked, THATS what has us climbing the spiral staircase with them, not knowing what lies ahead, despairing at the repetitive, at the same reactions. yet we should rejoice because we are climbing higher and higher with each turn and getting to the epiphany we all crave.

comments, views, criticism and designer shoes are all welcome (size 6), bashing, name calling and insults are not.

p.s. this has nothing to do with my FF Spiral Staircase. well not entirely... some what.

p.p.s. I love you (i couldnt help it :D)

Beautiful, Mini ..

Y'day ..In an answer to a posters query [ she had said ARHI are back to Square 1 ]..I had said that ARHI are in different square ...This is exactly what I meant when I said that ...They are in a square but the interplay, the understanding , intra-relationship between them has changed...for every turnback to the square, they begin the journey superficially the same but vastly changed when searched in depth..😊

Lovely Post..enjoyed it 😃

Hey,

If the beautiful story that you are writing under this name if what you have interpreted from this poem, then bow down to you girl... It is true that everyone has its own interpretations about things, but how rich and thought-provoking that can be sometimes, leaves me in a jaw-dropping-like condition... And you just gave me another of those moments...

I appreciate your interpretation, hands down, love the way you unwound the spiral staircase...

this paragraph says it all for me. brilliant post muffin 👍🏼 loved every word of it!!

this spiral staircase tends to look tad bit longer & crooked compared to something normal. after all these two are no normal ppl, their love story is super exceptional. their struggle and this road of thorns will be rewarded someday with petals instead

i've never been addicted to an indian show like this one before! it's indeed da best indian serial i've watched so far in my indian tv life 😍

@Mini...that was a great reference ...a great poetry to relate to..helps us to decipher our 'angst' behaviour towards their 'angst' relationship.
The more we think they have reached their limits...the more we find spirals still there to go...this feel to find them to their destination...keeps us all hooked...& crave for that 'moment' which either of them would just give in an inch. And that inch...would spread an immense relief and forgive for what all the grief ASR has been lashing by holding to the demons of his past & Khushi's all bitter sweet attitude towards life.
We still hope...& hope in sweet misery...😊
A lovely read...an excellent post.
Ps:-BTW...when are u updating your FF -Spiral Staircase?😉
Ash.

mini very nicely said 👏 yeah even with farq game initially i thought its back square on when she challenged her in office by giving silly tasks.
but when actually thought about it i realized that its not so.
it has changed. both where not conscious of each other at that time.
but now they are painfully aware of each other 👏

Absolutely. Both have changed in themselves and in their attitude towards each other..which is what I said in this thread: https://www.indiaforums.com/forum/iss-pyaar-ko-kya-naam-doon/2168453/so-he-wasnt-trying-to-break-her

She is now no longer forcing his hand, but leaving the choice of making an apology to him, and he is actually going and making an apology---the first time we've seen him apologize to anyone other than Khushi.

It is a long road, yes, and we have miles to go before...etc.
