There was a time when a heroine's career took a downward turn as soon as she hit the wrong side of 25. Film and endorsement o f f e r s wo u l d dry up and by the time she reached her mid-30s, she was willing to take up supporting characters, at times playing a mother to older heroes — sometimes even to former onscreen love interests. But now, female actors in their 30s are making waves in the industry. Several actors in B-town today — read Mahie Gill, Poorna Jagannathan and Nargis Fakhri have made their tinsel town debuts in their 30s and are emerging as favourites too.
NARGIS FAKHRI (32):
This model-turned-actor who made her debut with one of the most eligible bachelors in B-town, Ranbir Kapoor, is the newest 30-plus hottie on the block. Nargis, who is of Czech and Pakistani descent, even bagged endorsement deals before her maiden venture released. She was also in the news for her alleged affair with RK.
BARBARA MORI (33):
Mexican import Barbara sent temperatures soaring in her debut Hindi film Kites opposite Hrithik Roshan. Her o n s c re e n kiss with t h e h u n k y hero shot her to instant stardom and set t o n g u e s w a g g i n g about their o f f s c re e n re l at i o n - ship. Though the film bombed at the box office, the Mexican actor's looks were widely discussed among men.
MAHIE GILL (35):
She made her debut with the Anurag Kashyap directorial Dev.D, and earned praise for her portrayal of Paro. She went on to do Ram Gopal Varma's Not A Love Story and the Timangshu Dhulia flick Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster. Her steamy scene with Randeep Hooda in the latter was the talk of the town when it was leaked online before the film's release.
POORNA JAGANNATHAN (38):
She was well over 30 when she made her Bollywood debut as a spunky television journalist in Delhi Belly. Her curly l o ck s, b i n d a a s attitude, bohemian looks and effortless s c re e n p re s e n c e made her the flavour of the season.
CHITRANGDA SINGH (35):
This so-called Smitha Patil lookalike made her debut in Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi in 2003, but her commercial debut in the latest Akshay Kumar and John Abraham-starrer instantly catapulted her into the big league. The actor is now doing an item number titled Kaafirana, a rustic Indian song choreographed by Farah Khan in Joker. Compiled by P Sangeetha
