Mere Brother Ki Dulhan: Movie Review

Gaurav MalaniGaurav Malani, TNN | Sep 9, 2011, 04.50PM IST

It's more than obvious with a self-explanatory title like Mere Brother Ki Dulhan that the story of the film would be about a guy falling for his brother's bride-to-be. Predictability seeps in this Yash Raj romantic comedy from the title itself!

When Imran Khan does a takeoff on the three ruling Khans of Bollywood in the opening credits, you somehow sense that the film has defined its domain. And it isn't long before you realize that the narrative is taking the route of Shah Rukh Khan's Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge . By the time the boy comprehends his love for the girl, she is already engaged to someone else. Only this time it's the boy's brother - so it's more of an inhouse affair!

The only advancement that the film shows in its storytelling is that Katrina Kaif, who holds the record of playing a Bollywood bride who runs away on her wedding day from one hero to another in the climax ( Humko Deewana Kar Gaye, Namastey London, Singh is Kinng, Ajab Prem Ki Ghajab Kahani ), for a change, makes the shift on her engagement day itself by interval point.

Like SRK from DDLJ , the boy refuses to elope with the girl. So the two have to device ways to ward off the wedding now. While an imaginative screenplay could have helped the second half sail through in such situation, the film resorts to conventional conflicts like bringing back the brother's ex-flame in the plot to bhaang -based confessions.

What still makes the film watchable is Katrina's live-wire energy wherein she never goes overboard and keeps bustling with vivacity through the runtime. With Imran Khan restricted in his range and the immensely talented Ali Zafar being reduced to a second fiddle, it's left up to Katrina to save the ship, which she ably does as far as the average script allows her to. Also despite the familial cross-connection, the overall spirit of the film remains lighthearted throughout and never gets into the high-voltage family drama mode.

The screenplay fails to tap the little potential that the story offers (esp. in the second half) pretty much like the film fails to exploit the talent of Ali Zafar. The writing is shallow and resorts to a convenient climax. The continual spoof on Shah Rukh Khan's My Name is Khan act is neither amusing nor caustic.

Like any Yash Raj film, the music is peppy, the styling is uber-cool and the cinematography is striking (despite the repetitive shots of Taj Mahal).

Imran Khan is decent in his role and absolutely funny at some instances. Ali Zafar shows good comic timing whenever he gets a chance though he remains underused. Katrina Kaif looks gorgeous and her free-spirited act makes you sit through the film. John Abraham's cameo is so pointless that one wonders why he was there in the film. Arfeen Khan's spoof on Shah Rukh Khan is as much pointless.

Mere Brother ki Dulhan is relatively old and familiar entertainment.

Review of

Mere Brother Ki Dulhan (2011 - Hindi)

Mere Brother Ki Dulhan movie review, and Mere Brother Ki Dulhan critics rating, comments on Mere Brother Ki Dulhan

  • Yeh Dulhan Kaafi Entertaining Hain…

(Divya Solgama wrote on Sep 9 2011 2:32PM)

When you read the name "Yash Raj" you know for sure that it's a romantic film full of song, drama and stars. Initially the founder made films which were out and out romantic under his supervision. Later he started producing the film with his assistants, which was followed by his son and other creative directors. A decade back there was a time when almost all films under this banner were Musical super hits. But then some films started flopping and slowly the lucky charm started to fade out. Except for one or two biggies there was nothing much being offered by this banner. But last year with releases like Badmaash Company & Band Baaja Baraati the banner has started getting their cards right and back on track. To continue the right flow they give us another Rom-Com with a fresh pair, with good dosage of chartbuster music. So let's find out whether the banner will strike gold this time or might be just glam sham without any content.

"Mere Brother Ki Dulhan" is story of Kush {Imran Khan} who is assigned to search a bride for his brother Luv {Ali Zafar}. Luv is based in London and had a break up in his life, thus decides to get married and that too an arranged marriage. Kush starts searching for the suitable girl and finally meets Dimple {Katrina Kaif}. Dimple and Luv have a chat over video conference and boths family like each other, thus the marriage is fixed. But in that time Kush and Dimple become good friends and slowly starts liking each other. Before they could express their feelings for each other Luv lands in India. What happens next is what the entire film about.

Story is simple and has been seen many times in our Hindi and Hollywood cinema. The first reference which comes in your mind is "Sorry Bhai". But it's the screenplay, Dialogs and the fresh looks of the lead pair which makes you entertain throughout the film. First half of the film is fast, sweet and entertaining. The feel continues ever post interval, but looses the flow in between of the second half. Thankfully it gains momentum and gets back on right track towards the climax and makes you entertained. One will love scenes like Imran interviewing the girls, Imran talks with Katrina over our culture, Katrina interviewing Ali, Imran – Katrina Scooter ride, Katrina meeting Ali {Take on Swades, followed by Sholay}, Katrina eloping with Imran, Imran – Katrina in Muslim attire, Ali confessing to Imran, followed by the climax scene between Imran, Katrina, Parishit & Kanwaljeet.

On the flip side the over acting of Ali Zafar is highly irritating. Also the side track of Piyali slows down the flow of the film. The moment story shifts to Ali and his ex girlfriend it loses the touch and seems dragging. Camera work is good and matches with the style of Yash Raj productions. Editing is fine, some amount of work could had been done in the second half {Ali Zafars scenes}.

Music by Sohail Sen is superb. The title track is totally entertaining with visuals from super hits Khans films. "Dhunki" is the catchiest song from the album and definitely rocks. "Choomantar" and "Ishq" are fine and enjoyable. "Madhubala" will make you dance. "Do Dhaari Talwar" is the weakest and unwanted song in the film. This song should have been edited. Rest all songs are visually great.

Ali Zafar makes a decent debut in this Rom-Com. It's the screenplay, Actors fresh pair and the director's way of treating the film which works in the favor of this predictable story. We all know what is there in the film and still if you like it, then the director and the writers deserve a pat on their back. Ali should have trimmed down the romantic scenes between Ali Zafar and the debutant girl with a song. That would have definitely worked in favor of the film.

Imran Khan is sweet and cute in this film. He manages to pull his part easily and delivers a confident performance. Katrina Kaif gets a dream role after Namaste London. Her character is full of life and rocks throughout the film. It's nice to see that she has evolved as an actor too. She looks pretty throughout the film. Ali Zafar overacts and hams a lot. Parikshit Sahani, Kanwaljeet Singh and others give a decent support. Debutant Tara is average.

So bol meri "Filmi Khopdi" is film mein kitna hai Dum ?

Dum hai boss, acha khaasa entertainment hain with good music. If you like Typical Rom Coms with decent music and star power then this is your film. The film despite of having a predictable script and illogical stuffs manages to entertain with good screenplay, Music, Fresh Lead Pair, etc. And for all Katrina Kaif fans must say that "Yeh Dulhan Kaafi Entertaining Hain".

    Ratings : 3.5/5

Katrina MERE BROTHER KI DULHAN rocks: Movie Review
[09 Sep 2011]

STARRING Imran Khan, Katrina Kaif, Ali Zafar, John Abraham, Tara D'Souza, Kanwaljeet Singh, Parikshat Sahni, Mahru Sheikh and others.DIRECTION Ali Abbas Zafar STORY The plot of this romantic comedy revolves around the characters of Kush Agnihotri (Imran Khan) and Dimple Dixit (Katrina Kaif). Kush is an assistant director in film industry and stays in the mayanagri of Mumbai, though he originally comes from the beautiful hilly town of Dehradun.

Kush has a brother Luv Agnihotri (Ali Zafar), who stays in London and wants to settle in life. Luv, who is an investment banker and every inch a videshi babu, wants a desi beauty as his bride, and hence, asks his younger brother Kush to search a suitable candidate.

Now, Kush starts meeting families and prospective brides to select the suitable match for his brother. After several encounters with useless and not- so- suitable candidates, Kush meets Dimple and feels that she was the right candidate for his brother.

Dimple Dixit, too, has reached a stage in her life when she decides to settle down in matrimonial bliss and is in search of a suitable package. Basically, she is pure Indian at heart but her appearance and attitude make her look a bindas girl of the town.

However, the story takes a turn when Kush himself starts feeling attracted towards Dimple, the girl whom he had selected for his brother Luv Agnihotri. What happens to Luv Agnihotri and if Dimple agrees to Kush's proposal, are revealed in the latter part of the flick.

PERFORMANCE

Imran Khan, the fine actor of recent hit 'Delhi Belly', who plays the role of younger brother Kush Agnihotri in the film, comes out with a winning performance. His confused state of mind when he falls in love with his brother's dulhan, has been beautifully displayed. Imran-Katrina Kaif chemistry rocks in the film.

Katrina Kaif, the sizzling hot bollywood babe who has become hot favorite of Yashraj banner, once again rocks in this character of Dimple Dixit who is London returned but desi at heart. Katrina's acting and her rock 'Dhunki' avatar is endearing and certainly an improvement from her past performances.

Ali Zafar, the Pakistani actor who plays the character of elder brother Luv Agnihotri in the flick, has superb comic timing and rocks in the first hour. The talented actor has once again proved his credentials in bollywood with his acting in the flick.

Parikshat Sahni and Kanwaljeet Singh provide excellent support to the main cast of the flick and carry their parts efficiently. Tara D'Souza comes out with a good performance.

The direction of Ali Abbas Zafar is good and the director shows promise for this type of romantic comedy. His execution of the plot is perfect and final product entertains the viewers. However, second half of the flick somehow looks a little slow on excitement but the climax makes for that deficiency.

The music of the flick is a big plus as numbers 'Dhunki', 'Choomantar', 'Madhubala', etc, have the capacity to make the viewers want to watch the flick again and again. Bosco- Caesar's choreography adds value to the whole venture. Cinematography by Sudeep Chatterjee suits the subject of the film.

STARDUST VERDICT

Katrina-Imran chemistry is rocking and fun quotient of the flick should ensure hit status at the box- office. Katrina looks gorgeous, while Imran and Ali Zafar provide hilarious moments in the film. Rocking music is another plus point which will certainly help the film in the final analysis at the box- office. A good entertaining flick from Yashraj.

STAR Rating: ***

Review: Hilarious and youthful rom-com MBKD is a must watch this weekend!

Updated on Friday, September 09, 2011, 16:15

Review: Hilarious and youthful rom-com MBKD is a must watch this weekend!Zeenews Bureau

Yet another romantic comedy from the Yash Raj Films has hit theatres today. 'Mere Brother ki Dulhan' is a love story of a unique sort where two brothers end up wanting to be with the same girl.

It is a hilarious love triangle and a peppy script to suit the audiences across different age groups as it offers complete entertainment for everyone. Kush Agnihotri, the younger brother played by Imran Khan is an assistant director in Bollywood who is now on a mission to find a suitable bride for his elder brother.

Ali Zafar who plays the role of Luv Agnihotri is the elder one who has a secured job in London. Luv has had a break up with his long-term girlfriend, Piyali played by Tara D'Souza, and is now desperate to move on. In an attempt to move on, Luv calls his younger brother Kush in India and tells him to bride-hunt for him. He trusts his younger brother to find an ideal girl for him as the two share the same taste. Now Kush launches the hunt for the suitable bride.

After many failed attempts, one day he gets a call from a bureaucrat played by Kawaljeet in response to a matrimonial add for Luv. Kush goes to meet the girl and her father. He is shocked to meet Dimple Dixit played by Katrina Kaif, as he knows of her as a wild and adventurous girl who he had met in at an excursion five years ago.

But the two families happen to approve and like each other so the preparations of Luv and Dimple's wedding start. Now during the course of preparations, Kush and Dimple happen to fall in love with each other.

Dimple speaks her heart out to Kush who takes a little longer to realise that he too is in love with her. But a few days down the line Kush realizes the same and then begins the quest of lovers to unite in an awkward situation like this.
Ali Abbas Zafar's story is based on the age-old formula of a love triangle and is not necessarily novel. However, the screenplay, also penned by the director himself, keeps the audience involved and engrossed at all times.

The story unfolds in such a manner that the viewers are eager to know what is going to happen next. At places, the screenplay dips but over all Ali Abbas Zafar manages to keep the story engaging.

The emotional undercurrents in the drama make it more than just a light-hearted comedy. The dialogues are good and entertaining at the same time. The youth will definitely identify more with the dialogues than the older generation.
Katrina looks as gorgeous as ever and she does justice to her role as the wild child Dimple.

Imran Khan sticks to his chocolate boy image once again and watching Pakistani singer Ali Zafar in a Bollywood film is a good treat to the eyes.

All in all a light hearted hilarious rom-com which surely makes it a must go for this weekend!

Rating : Four cheers for this one!

Mere Brother Ki Dulhan - Movie Review

Movie Review: 'Mere Brother Ki Dulhan' is a fun watch
By Naresh Kumar Deoshi
Fri, Sep 09, 2011 12:09:08 GMT

The ApunKaChoice movie review of Mere Brother Ki Dulhan.
Now, this one is a dynamite of a Dulhan. She loves her can of beer and doesn't mind wetting her whistle if bhang is on the flow. She kicks the living daylights out of a guy who tries to cozy up forcibly, and, on the other hand, happily abducts another one who refuses to elope with her. She is a livewire, a loose cannon and a rocker babe all rolled into the stunning form of a Dulhan you'd take home at your own peril. And she wouldn't have been the same if not for Katrina Kaif who makes this Yashraj presentation more about the bride than the brothers.

Yup! Katrina Kaif, the same gal who's been branded to have a plastic smile and an abysmal lack of talent by her harshest critics. It's the same Kat who builds up your curiosity and steals the show in this good to middling matrimonial rom-com, while Imran Khan tries to keep pace with the femme fireball but falls short of matching her vivacity.

As for the film, it is an entertaining one-time watch with a Bollywood fan's fix of fun and masti from start to end. For its own good, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan never drifts into needless melodrama, never gets serious -- let alone weepy -- but always breezes by with tongue-in-cheek hilarity. That, besides Kat, is its USP.

Kush (Imran Khan) is searching for a suitable bride for his brother Luv (Ali Zafar) who's settled in London. After rejecting a number of outrageous wannabes, he zeroes down on Dimple (Katrina Kaif) a feisty tomboy of a girl he had an encounter with a few years back. Luv approves of his brother's choice and agrees to the match. But as the wedding preparations progress in full swing, Kush and Dimple end up falling for each other. Now they have only two options: either elope or hatch an ingenious plan that enables them to get married without causing emotional hurt to anyone. They choose the latter. It's a tough task, but, with a bit of shrewdness and chicanery, not impossible.

In his maiden directorial attempt, Ali Abbas Zafar takes a simple, no-frills-attached approach to tell a feelgood story that may at places fail to tap the comedic potential of the situations in the plot, but oozes dollops of charisma of the lead actors. Katrina hasn't looked and acted so well so far. She's the film's heartbeat. Take her out, and you are left with a limp script inaptly shouldered by a strictly average Imran Khan and an affected Ali Zafar.

Must admit though that the references of the old songs do add some wicked fun to the plot, be it Ali Zafar eloping with his girlfriend Pia (Tara D'Souza) on a rickety cycle with the altered version of the song "Meri Pyari Bindu" (from Padosan) playing in the background, or Imran and Ali's skimpily dressed girlfriend playing badminton to the raunchy tune of Helen's "Piya Tu Ab Toh Aaja". There's also a nod to Salman's Dabangg when Ali Zafar quaffs tumbler after tumbler of bhang and is tagged "Da.Bhang" man.

It's this juvenile, chuckle-worthy humour that makes you look beyond Katrina Kaif, who, for me, is the film's hero.

MERE BROTHER KI DULHAN Review: Katrina Kaif holds a crumbling film together

By Shweta Parande

The actor enacts her lively, spunky, rockstar babe role with ease, as against the mellowed Imran

Yet another shaadi flick from Bollywood – and Yash Raj Films. This time, starring Katrina Kaif, Imran Khan and Ali Zafar. While the film's title (Mere Brother Ki Dulhan) might make you cringe and think it's a version of Sorry Bhai, it's not. Neither is it in the genre of Band Baaja Baaraat or Hum Aapke Hain Koun! Rather, MBKD is lighthearted, but tries too hard to be funny at places.

The film opens in London with Luv Agnihotri (Ali Zafar) going through a breakup with his longtime girlfriend Piali Patel (Tara D'Souza). Minutes after slamming the door on her, Luv calls up his assistant director brother Kush (Imran Khan) in Mumbai, asking him to search for a bride for him since Luv has always been unlucky in love.

Kush is only too happy to oblige. Followed by some predictable scenes of meeting potentialdulhans and rejecting them. A huge matrimonial ad in a newspaper finally solves the problem (though how a middle-class family could afford it, is another question). That's where the twist in the tale happens. Bride-to-be Dimple Dixit (Katrina Kaif) – has a 'friendly' past with Kush, and sparks fly as soon as they see each other, and through the wedding preparations. How Kush finally gets together with Dimple is through some unrealistic situations, but those seem fine in a 'rom-com'. (Remember Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahaani?)

MBKD loses its grip considerably post interval. That happens to many films, you might say, but this one drags a bit too much, especially after you've had a good lunch. You can either have a quick nap or chat on your Blackberry, until the proceedings onscreen somehow manage to wake you up. There is a little twist in the end, but MBKD always tries to be on the funny side. On some occasions when it goes in for some melodrama, it doesn't work. Also, there are references to a number of films and stars, including Aamir, Salman and Shahrukh and their hit films – along with some old Hindi numbers used for comic effect. Dimple having a dyslexic older brother, too, seems more like a spoof on My Name is Khan.

Imran Khan in yet another romantic film is predictable – always the cool guy supporting his girl. He is reassuring, to give him his due. Ali Zafar as well as the other supporting actors do a good job. But surely Katrina Kaif carries the film on her nimble shoulders, showing range in her acting for the first time. Her lively, spunky, rockstar babe role has been enacted with ease. While she might have overdone the act at some places, you really can ignore that because that is what the character of pretty Dimple is all about – unpredictable, fearless in a nonchalant way, funny and animated. She can get away with anything. Katrina not only looks hot but is very comfortable in her skin and is the real hero of MBKD. But one really doesn't know what the whole hype was about John Abraham's cameo. The dishy actor is hardly in the frame for a few seconds, not even providing for some eye candy (wink, wink).

Music by Sohail Sen is good. Cinematography by Sudeep Chatterjee catches the eye. And while writing this, the news comes in that the opening has been good. The film might just be a hit with little competition except Mausam next week. But it is certainly not a film you can call memorable.
