Part 29

The next morning Prakash dropped Suja and Priyam at the hospital and spent some time with his athai. When took leave to go to the other hospital Suja called out after him saying "Ask Armaan uncle to come here after he has rested." Prakash just gnashed his teeth thinking even if athai didn't say anything, this woman just wouldn't let go of it. But he couldn't say anything to her. So he just nodded and left.

When he reached Armaan's ward, there was a doctor injecting him and a nurse standing beside him with a tray. "What happened?" he asked the nurse. She just looked at him blankly without replying. When he once again gestured to ask what was the matter, she indicated with her eyes to ask the doctor. Seeing the doctor busy checking uncle, he hesitatingly asked "doctor is everything ok?" But the doctor's reply shocked him.

Dr: Far from it.

P: What do you mean sir?

Dr: Are you related Armaan?

P: Yes sir.

Dr: Where were you last night? Why did no one stay with him last night?

Prakash stood looking at the floor and then said "I was here till 8 o'clock. But since my wife is in the family way, I couldn't leave her alone at night. So I had to go. He said he would be able to manage."

Dr: You should have at least informed the night nurse on duty, that there's no one with him. You know, he has tried to get up from the bed at night and fell off it. His stitches opened up. I had to rush here in the middle of the night and do it all over again. More than that, it's going to take longer to heal now. As it is his body is covered with stitches. Looks likes he had a maor accident recently.

Prakash stood shocked still. "Doctor, is it anything serious?"

Dr: Of course it is. The fall has set back his recovery. Now, I've sedated him so that he doesn't feel the discomfort. He should be asleep for some time.

After the doctor and nurse left, Prakash sat next to uncle and his eyes filled with tears. He felt very guilty about having left him alone last night. He put his hand on his forehead and felt it warm. He knew if a person developed fever after an operation, it wasn't a good sign. He got really worried. What should he do? He couldn't confide in anyone as per his promise to uncle.

After racking his brain for some time, he thought he should consult someone who knew that Armaan uncle was the donor. The first name that came to his mind was Dr.Sudha. He immediately called her and related the incident to her.

Dr. S: I'm neither surprised nor shocked. I had warned Mr. Armaan that though the visiting surgeon was an experienced one, the hospital is short staffed. So we can't expect much by way of patient care. Nevertheless, he felt that this would be the perfect hospital for his incognito act as it isn't very well known. I even advised him that nothing was more important that his health, but he was adamant.

P: Doctor what am I to do now? I'm very concerned for uncle. Please help me.

Dr. S: I can do anything only if you bring him over and admit him here.

P: Yes, yes I'll do as you say. But you're sure he'll be ok after that na? Otherwise all his sacrifice will be meaningless, because athai has been living only for him all these years.

Dr. S: I know how deep the bonding can be between the couples who've been married for so many years.

In his mind Prakash thought "You don't know anything about this couple," but without wasting any time on all that he asked how he could shift uncle in the condition he was in and how he would explain this to the hospital authorities.

Dr. Sudha was a co-ordinator and had to deal with all types of situations. It was her duty not only to assist patients but also extend whatever help their families needed, as far as possible. She was used to dealing with many such problems on a day to day basis. So she said "Leave all that to me, I'll send an ambulance for Mr. Armaan. Ok? You only arrange for settling the hospital bills."

When Prakash went to the reception desk to find out about Armaan's bill, he was told that Armaan had deposited a large amount in advance. They would have to calculate and find out how much was the refund amount and they could do all that only after the doctor had signed the discharge papers. So he told them he would come the following day for it.

Prakash was glad that he didn't have to worry about the financial aspect at least. Now, he could concentrate on getting uncle the best possible medical attention. In an hour he was informed by the hospital staff that the ambulance was at the gate. Prakash had already packed the few belongings Armaan had brought. The ward boys came to shift him to the stretcher as he was still fast asleep, and put him into the ambulance.

Prakash sat beside him, holding his hand and found that it was even hotter now. Soon there were at Apollo Hospital and the staff there jumped to action immediately. On Prakash's request he was taken to a ward on the same floor as Riddhima's. Intravenous drips were started and medications injected along with it.

As the nurses attended to all this, Prakash called Suja and asked her to come out on the corridor, where he was waiting for her. He didn't see the point in hiding anything from her any further. He decided to tell her the truth.

Seeing Suja come out of Riddhima's room and look on either side, he beckoned to her. Then holding her hand took her into Armaan uncle's room. The doctor attending him was telling the nurse, "Keep recording his temperature every 2 hours. If it doesn't come down by evening, we have something to be really concerned." Then while they spoke about the medicine, doseage etc., Suja looked shocked and asked her husband, "What happened to uncle?" Prakash gestured to keep quiet by putting his finger to his lips.

As the doctor walked towards the door, Prakash went to him and enquired about uncle's condition. "As you know this is a very dangerous sign. The thing we wish should never happen in post operative patients is fever. We are doing our best, the rest" saying so the doctor raised his eye skyward and left from there.

Tears welled up in Suja's eyes hearing the doctor. "Prakash," she called out in a choked voice. He turned towards her and pulled her to the sofa.

P: I think by now you must have guessed that uncle is the donor. He didn't want any of us to know that and hence got admitted to another hospital. The surgeon had assured him that he would be able to move in 3 – 4 days. So he thought he could stay away till then on the pretext of taking care of the imaginary donor.

Then he went on to tell her how he had found out the truth and about uncle's fall the previous night. At that Suja burst out crying. He hugged her and consoled her saying "Don't worry, he is going to be fine. Even God wouldn't punish such a selfless man."

S: From the morning amma has been pestering me to call uncle because she wants to talk to him. The number was coming "switched off."

It was then that it struck Prakash that he hadn't seen uncle's cell anywhere. He excused himself and immediately called Alphonso Hospital to enquire about the cell phone. The receptionist told him that it was found on the floor, when the ward boys went to clean after they had left. He could collect it the next day when he came to collect the refund he was told.

Turning to Suja after his call he said "He had probably tried to pick his cell phone and fell off. But athai shouldn't know anything about this. It'll be a rude shock for her."

S: for how long can we hide it from her?

P: at least till uncle is out of danger.

S: What will we tell her?

P: You don't worry, I'll handle that. Now you go or athai might start worrying where you are.

Suja walked up to Armaan and holding his hand to her tearful eyes said in between her sobs, "Uncle, I can never thank you enough for giving my amma a new lease of life." Prakash put his arm around her to console her and escorted her to Athai's room.

P: is athai awake?

S: yes

P: ok, you go to the restroom and wash your face while I talk to her. Otherwise she might question you about it.

S: will you message me when uncle wakes up? I want to talk to him.

Prakash nodded saying "Sure."

The next few hours were the most critical ones for Armaan. It was 6 in the evening still Armaan's fever showed no signs of letting up. On the contrary he was beginning to be delirious. When Suja peeked into his room as her mother was napping, he was calling out for Riddhima and asking her forgiveness. "I won't be able to face my parents or your mother, if you don't forgive me" he kept ranting. Suja burst out crying again. "Who asked you to come here?" Prakash scolded her. That made her cry even more. Then realizing his mistake and remembering that her fluctuating hormones were making her all the more cranky, he hugged her and consoled her.

Soon the doctor came and enquired who Riddhima was? When Prakash explained everything in short, the doctor opined that a severe infection had set in and that the patient seemed to be giving up. If anyone could pull him back from the brink, it would be that 'Riddhima'.

Suja and Prakash told the doctor that Riddhima was his wife, the receiver of his kidney but she was unaware who the donor was. They expressed their concern about how Riddhima would react and whether that would adversely affect her recovery .

Dr: I'll talk to her and explain things unemotionally as a doctor should. Then we'll see how she takes it.

So leaving the nurse with Armaan, they went to Riddhima's room. The doctor first checked her pressure etc and she was quite surprised as this doctor had never visited her before. "You are progressing quite well" he complimented her, bringing a smile to her face. Then asked "Wouldn't it make you happier if the person who donated you his kidney was also doing as well?"

R: Of course I'll be doubly happy.

Dr: But unfortunately he isn't.

R: What are you saying doctor?

Dr: I'm sorry to say, but he has caught a severe infection and has high fever.

R: I'm so sorry to hear that. But how do you know? He's in another hospital na?

Dr: No, we've brought him here now. He is delirious and asking for you.

R: What?

Dr: Yes, only you can make him get well.

R: Doctor, I can't understand anything. How can I do anything? I don't even know that person.

Dr: I think you should know. I'll tell you. But before that, do you promise to co-operate with us?

R: Of course doctor that's the least I could do for such a selfless person.

Dr: Remember, you are also just recovering from a major surgery, so you shouldn't become too emotional.

When Riddhima stared at him uncomprehendingly, he asked "Did your husband visit you after your operation?" Riddhima shook her head still not understanding anything.

Dr: Why? Doesn't he care about you?

R: Of course he cares a lot about me. Only because the donor hasn't been keeping well he might not have been able to leave him and come. The donor has no relatives to take care of him you know.

Dr: Where is he now? The donor is just 2 rooms away from you and there is nurse with him, so where's your husband? We are all here.

When Riddhima still looked perplexed he asked "Haven't you guessed as yet?" then it slowly dawned on her, (which was better than giving her a sudden shock,) and she asked "You mean the donor is athaan?"

Before she could react to the news and break down or cry he said "If you cry or grieve, his sacrifice will be nullified. Even his request for anonymity was because he didn't want you to be worrying about his well being, when you yourself would be revering from a major surgery. He went to a different hospital so that you wouldn't even know about his whereabouts. But as they say 'Man Proposes but God Disposes'. God has probably made him come here, so that you can see him, convince him of your love and make him want to live happily with you for many more years.

Suja was totally baffled by the wonderful way the doctor had revealed the truth to her amma without getting her scared about her athaan's serious condition and at the same time making her want to help him recover soon. She was however jolted out of her thoughts when her mother asked the doctor, "Can I see him now?"
