Part 28

Suja sat holding her amma's hand even though she was asleep. Imitating her Priyam also sat beside her mummy, holding her amamma's hand. Prakash came after about half an hour. When Suja enquired what took him so long. He said he was held up in the traffic jam. But what irritated Suja was that, without enquiring about her amma's health, he sat on the sofa biting his nails. That was an indication that something was bothering him.

When she went up to him and asked him "what happened?" there was no reply. When she sat down beside him and put her hand on his shoulder, he was startled. When she repeated the question, he just shook his head saying "Nothing."

S: Are you hiding something from me?

P: What… what do I have to hide?

S: Something is bothering you for sure. Is it something regarding the person you just went to meet?

Prakash said "Yes," without realizing what he was saying and then sprang up asking "How do you know?"

S: Prakash from the time you've come back, you haven't even looked at amma or enquired about her. So I presume it must be something even more important than that. Tell me, what is it?

He came to his senses only then and to save himself from further questioning said, "Some official matter. That's all. Don't worry. How's athai? Hasn't she regained consciousness yet?"

S: Amma is ok and has gained consciousness too. They have sedated her so that she doesn't feel the post-operative pain. She's sleeping. She was awake when they brought her in. She saw us and smiled at us also. Then she looked around for someone, probably uncle. I'm surprised he didn't even call once to enquire about amma.

P: Actually he did. He called me when the operation was going on and again half an hour ago. I told him I'll call him back, after seeing how athai is doing.

S: Did you enquire about the donor? How is he?

P: He's fine. If he had been operated in this hospital, he would have had just a small cut, as they would have done most of the procedure through laproscopy. But that hospital doesn't have sophisticated technology, so he has a big cut.

S: Did you go and see him?

Only then Prakash realized that he had goofed up, but he smartly changed it to his advantage saying, "Yes, when uncle called, I asked him about the hospital and it was close to where I was. So I went to the hospital. You know uncle looks so tired. He hasn't had any rest as there is no one to relieve him. And in that hospital each room has only one bed. So he can't even lie down and rest for some time. That's what I've been brooding about actually. I was wondering if you could manage with athai here, I could go and assist uncle for a couple of days.

S: Of course, Prakash, when uncle has done so much for amma, we should also help him. Here the staff is very good. They come and check amma from time to time. So I can easily manage on my own. Let amma wake up, talk to her and then go there. Then while you are there, uncle can come here to visit amma, she'll be very happy if he does.

P: what you say is right, but uncle looks quite down. And moreover it's so far away…. I'm not sure

S: if it's so far away, how did you finish your official work and also visit that hospital in such a short time?

To get out of the tight situation Prakash pointed towards Riddhima saying "I think athai is waking up" and moved towards her. Of course she wasn't. So he went and started talking to his daughter asking her if she was hungry. When she answered in the affirmative, he told Suja, "You both go and have something from the canteen. I'll stay with athai."

After Suja and Priyam left, he sat on the chair close to his MIL's bed and started thinking. She had suffered so many years because of her athaan's misdoing, but now he had redeemed himself beyond reproach. He had more than compensated for all the faults he had made in the past, by donating his kidney for her.

There was a knock on the door and when he turned around, he saw a nurse. She had come to check Riddhima. He offered to wait outside. When he came back into the room after the nurse left, Riddhima was awake.

P: How are you feeling athai?

Riddhima smiled at him and said "I'm ok. Where are those two now?"

P: Priyam was hungry so I sent them to the canteen.

R: Do you know where's my cell?

P: I don't know. Suja must be having it? Why?

R: I want to talk to athaan and tell him that I'm ok. Give me your cell.

Prakash was a little hesitant as to what he should do because when he had left uncle, he had got over the sedative and was experiencing some discomfort. So he said "Don't worry athai, I've already spoken to him. He was quite tired having kept awake from early in the morning. He must be asleep now."

Riddhima looked at the clock on the wall and asked "What? Asleep at 6 o'clock in the evening? Anyway no harm trying." He had no excuse now. So he dialed Armaan's number and said "Athai wants to talk to you." And before he could say anything else Riddhima held out her hand for the phone. So he reluctantly handed it to her.

When she said "Athaan," he couldn't control his tears. "How are you dear?" he asked in a choked voice.

R: I just woke up. I'm fine. Thank you for everything athaan. You've given me punarjanmam. Prakash told me

Before she could even complete he asked "What, what did Prakash tell?"

R: That you've been with the donor from the morning and that you were tired. But I just wanted you to know that I'm ok. I know only then you'll sleep peacefully. My only regret is, I couldn't meet my donor. Could you give the phone to him? I want to thank him.

Athan hesitated for a few seconds and then said, "He's asleep ma. I'll give him your message."

R: Athaan, when will you come to see me?

That was his undoing. He was choked with emotion hearing her question. But steadying his voice as best as he could he said "Very soon. Till then take care and call me whenever you can."

R: Sure. And once again a big thanks to both of you.

A: Who both?

R: You and the donor. Who else? By the way what is his name? It feels awkward calling him donor.

Armaan was again tongue-tied for a few seconds and then said, "his name is Vignesh."

R: Really? It seems so unbelievable. I feel as if my 'Ishta Devata' himself has come to save my life.

In her mind she thought, "You are also my ishta devata. Always have been, always will be." And at that thought tears welled up in her eyes. When he said "Ok, goodnight, take care." She flicked her tears and said "you too" looking around to see if Prakash had seen her tears, but he wasn't in the room. He had walked out after handing his cell to her.

She was quite composed by the time Suja and Priyam came back, but she was beginning to feel some pain. Priyam was thrilled to see her awake and started bombarding her amamma with questions as to why she was sleeping so much? when she would come home? etc. Suja had to literally drag her away.

Prakash came and informed Riddhima that he was going to the other hospital to relieve uncle and may be there, for a couple of days. "Take her also" Suja said pushing Priyam towards him.

P: No, no let her remain here. That hospital ward is very small.

S: Uncle will be going to the hotel to sleep na? Let her go with him.

Now Prakash was petrified. He said the first thing that came to his mind. "Uncle is tired, he needs rest. She'll keep jabbering and won't let him sleep."

S: But there's no place on the bed for both of us. What if she kicks me by mistake in the night?

Yes, that was a genuine problem he thought. So he knelt down beside Priyam and said "Kanamma, just for one or two days will you sleep on the floor? I'll spread a bed sheet for you.

S: No, no the floor will be cold for her and she might get scared alone.

Then seeing his tensed face she said "Don't worry, we'll manage somehow. I'll make her turn towards the wall and I'll turn myself away from her. You carry on." As he left he requested his daughter not to keep talking and to let her amamma rest.

Riddhima's discomfort started increasing and soon became unbearable. Seeing her face contort in pain, Suja enquired what the matter was and called the nurse. She came and gave her an injection saying slight discomfort was bound to be there.

But the injection made Riddhima drowsy. Suja decided since both she and Priyam had already eaten heavily, they should also go to bed early. When the nurse came again to check and saw the little girl sleeping in the room, she woke up Suja and said that little children couldn't stay at the hospital. She asked her to send her away. When Suja tried to convince her that there was no one to take her, she told Suja that she herself could go and come back the next morning and that she would take care of her mother. Moreover with the injection, her mother wouldn't wake up soon.

So Suja called her husband and told him that she was going to the hotel and enquired if uncle had already gone there. He answered in the negative and asked her to go to the hotel. Then he said "There's another call coming, I'll call you back." Cutting the call, he explained the problem to Armaan, who at once asked him to leave and go to the hotel as he felt that the ladies shouldn't be left alone. When Prakash hesitated he said "I'm fine. Don't worry about me and if I need anything, I have to only ring for the nurse. Good night. Take care."

'Man Proposes but God Disposes' Prakash thought to himself, as moved to the auto stand. As he sat in the auto rickshaw he thought ran deep. "This man never wanted anyone to know that he was the donor but the truth came out accidentally. I wish to help him, but circumstances prevent me from doing so.

Many a times more than a person it's circumstances that are to be blamed for that person's actions. Basically, uncle isn't a bad or mean person. But he was also a prey to circumstances, which prevented him from doing his duty to his wife. Moreover, as it is said in the Gita, everything happens only at the precise time it's destined to happen. Maybe athai's destiny was to be separated from her husband for 29 years after her marriage. Now the right time had probably come and things were falling into place." Only when the rickshaw halted, he noticed that he had reached his destination.

"As we booked only one room this time, how could uncle come when you both were here?" he reasoned to Suja's query of "Why uncle hadn't come to take rest."

S: I know. Tomorrow morning we'll go to amma's hospital, you go and relieve him. Let him come and sleep here in the daytime.

"That's right" he said switching off the lights as they all lay down for the night.

awesome update...loved it...no one is there to take care of armaan...wish both recover soon😊...pritham is taking of care of athan but god disposes...how will rid react when she came to know her athan is donor...their care towards each other is beyond words...

Awesome part di... loved it. Loved the bonding between all of them. I really wish Riddhima and Suja should know that Armaan is the donor.Now i really love Armaan's character.Wish both of them recover asap.Update next part super soon, can't wait to c when Riddhima comes to know about Armaan.
