Chapter Twenty One...
Varmala Garland Exchange!
Geet took slow steps at a time descending the stairs;
her emotions were
going up and down like the roller coaster as she closing the distance. The beginning of marriage rituals, varmala
involves the exchange of garlands between the bride and groom. Maan, relatives and friends waited for bride
to join, his back was facing Pinki, Geet and Ayanna. Pinki was glad that Maan was not facing them,
and Adi, Agustiya took extra care of that and as Geet came close to sacred tent,
despite of long veil they duck their self out of view. Maan uneasiness grew stronger; he all of a
sudden started feeling suffocated. His
thick shera felt like someone is choking him with a plastic bag. Numbing his thinking sense he fidgeted in his
spot. Both Men noticed his uneasiness and
were nervous themselves too. As the
girls approached the party, they made Geet face Maan however kept their self
away from undeviating view to him.
(I do swear that I'll always be there.
I'd give anything and everything and I will always care.
Through weakness and strength, happiness and sorrow,
for better for worse, I will love you with
every beat of my heart.)
Maan
and Geet were on cliff, there presence reigning their mind, soul and body. In a way it was better as their mind occupied
to seek each other and paid no heed to the fact that was around them. Friends and relatives of the bride and groom
indulge in teasing and fun, to celebrate this happy occasion.
They were made to put the garland around each
other, in doing they do get the touch of each other that snapped from their
thoughts, as they looked at each other, the cover on their face made it
impossible to recognize.
They were parted again for another ritual was an auspicious
time chosen for the performance of the wedding ceremony.
{From this moment I have been blessed
I live only for your happiness
And for your love I'd give my last breath
From this moment on}
Dadima escorted Maan towards the main seating
in front of the sacred blaze. At the
auspicious time, the Priest conduct a puja and asked Maan to be seated next to
the Priest and in front of the sacred blazes, in which Maan was asked to chant
the first few mantras. It was during
this time, when Ayanna Geet's cousin indulges in stealing of his shoes. It was a fun tradition, at the girls thought
in which they get to charge a fee from the groom for agreeing to return the
shoes.
Kanyadaan
The wedding solemnized with four
important rituals- the Kanyadaan, in which the bride's father giving his
daughter's hand to the groom, Geet escorted back to the sacred tent to sit next
to Maan. Her head bowed all the time,
did managed to turn around to get the foretaste of the man who she was binding
the knot of her life all in vain. The
desperation was mutual; Maan's crown tilted sideways without his
permission. Priest continues the chants
and commands interrupted both, to follow the directives, as Geet's father leans
forward to hand over Geet's palm on Maan's extended open palm.
{I give my hand to you with all my heart
Can't wait to live my life with you, can't wait to start
You and I will never be apart
My dreams came true because of you}
The sight was amusing to the foursomes, who
gathered close to their better half perception to admire the play of warmth,
emotions and pure love could break the spell of distance that was about to
begin. The moment their skins were touched,
it was as if electrocuted, they impulsive at each other yet again. Geet assured herself it is him, how could it
be possible? Now she indicts her for not
checking out the photo that Bauji gave her.
As if telepathy, Maan astounded with disbelief, that he was marrying to
the same girl, who tormented him bright and dark. Whom, he vowed never to speak and show his
face. He mentally kicked his rear for
not checking once whom he was been marring.
It was too late to back off this arrangement, two hearts contemplating
on the issue on hand. In the same
position, staring at each other through their barriers, now the features are
clear reading each other's eyes in question what to do. It felt like eons no reaction on either side,
Geet tried to ease her hand off his, but instantly pulled with obligatory to
get tight clasp on her, and securing the other on top.
{From this moment as long as I live
I will love you, I promise you this
There is nothing I wouldn't give
From this moment on}
She
jerked up to look at Maan's covered face, all she noticed a small nod in
approval.
{You're the reason I believe in love
And you're the answer to my prayers from up above
All we need is just the two of us
My dreams came true because of you}
Maan couldn't think of
anything on how to get out of this awkward fate the life was playing hide and
seek with him, thousands of thoughts made the ferocious run in his mind. Dadima, that's all he could think of then the
girl sitting next to him that his heart thumps only for her. As he was in the tornado of thoughts, he felt
Geet's hand slipping off his, his instant reaction was to tighten his grip on
her not to let her slip again.
{From this moment as long as I live
I will love you, I promise you this}
Not sure
why he did that, but that's what he felt right to do to not let her go not this
time not anymore. "I bridegroom hold
your hand unto mine for lifelong commitment and for prosperity of family life."
{There is nothing I wouldn't give
From this moment}
He looked at her covered face then
continued. "May you attain full age in
all prosperity with me as your husband.
God, who is the master of all prosperity, the administrator of justice,
the creator of the universe and all subsisting and enlightened persons present
here, is giving you to me for the fulfillment of the family life's attainment
and obligation." Maan completed his vow
with honesty.
{I will love you as long as I live
From this moment on}
Geet couldn't hold herself back as the tears rolled down her cheeks as Maan stops after his last word she lifted her left hand to wipe off the last stream. Four pairs of eyes couldn't pull away with admiration from these thrilling emotional persecute.
Before the next major ritual begins, they were to repeat seven sentences together:
1. Always, remember the divine.
2. Always took upon each other with sympathy, love and compassion.
3. Help in all good deeds of each other.
4. Keep mind pure and virtuous. Be strong and righteous.
5. Show goodwill and affection to parents, brothers, sisters and other family members.
6. Bring up the children in such a manner that they are strong in mind and body.
7. Always, welcome and respect guests.
As they completed the marital advice, it was the time for Gathbandhan. Ayanna then tied a knot using the ends of the clothing worn by Geet and Maan, thus symbolizing their union.
