If 2005 worked wonderfully well when it came to music in Bollywood films, 2006 looks absolutely smashing with most of the big-wigs in the industry coming with their products. Yash Chopra, Karan Johar, Rakesh Roshan, Subhash Ghai, Sajid Nadiadwala, Mahesh Bhatt.....you name it and there is a movie from everyone. Hence it doesn't come as a surprise when the list continues to grow to "Top 15" when one starts jotting down the list of most anticipated music in 2006.
1) Dhoom 2
Label: Yash Raj Music
Easily the most anticipated album of the year. And why not when the film is a sequel of highly successful 'Dhoom' that boasted of a rocking soundtrack by Pritam. The composer returns for this Yash Raj film that promises to be even more vibrant and exciting on both the film and music front. Salim Sulaiman join the gang along with the star power of Hrithik, Ash, Abhishek and Bipasha and the stage is set for a rip roaring soundtrack. Also, much is expected from the background music too that played such an important role in the original!
2) Krrish
Label: T-Series
Will Rajesh Roshan weave his 'jaadu' for the umpteenth time for his brother's flick and come up with a pleasing melodious score? He has always done it for his family, especially for Hrithik with both 'Kaho Na Pyaar Hai' and 'Koi Mil Gaya' hitting the bull's eye. It would be the shocker of the decade if Rajesh Roshan doesn't get his hat-trick with Krrish that pairs Hrithik along with Priyanka.
3) Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna
Label: Sony Music
This is a guaranteed HIT soundtrack in the making. And the successful lineage by film maker Karan Johar [KKHH, K3G, KHNH, Kaal] says it all. The new-age musician trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy made it to the big league with Karan Johar's Kal Ho Naa Ho. You can just expect them to go better in this film. Great starcast of the film mandates that the music plays an important role in this Dharma production.
4) Salaam-E-Ishq: A Tribute to Love
Label: T-Series
When the movie's title says 'A Tribute To Love', one expects a romantic score in the offering. And when a flick boasts of a stellar starcast of Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, Govinda, Akshaye Khanna, John Abraham, Sohail Khan, Juhi Chawla, Priyanka Chopra, Ayesha Takia, Vidya Balan and Sonali Bendre, it would be simply criminal on part of the movie maker and the composer to come up with anything less than extraordinary. No wonder Nikhil Advani and Shankar Ehsaan Loy are expected to come up with the choicest of tunes for this BIG film!
5) Don
Label: T-Series
Nothing can go wrong when songs like 'Khaike Paan Banaraswaala' and 'Ye Mera Dil' from the original 'Don' are re-arranged for this Farhan Akhtar remake! But real challenge would be to have the new songs by Shankar Ehsaan Loy match up to the standards of the original. The trio had come up with a refreshing score in 'Dil Chahta Hai' though with 'Lakshya' they chose to be experimental. Will they go out and out 'masala' when SRK steps into Big B shoes?
6) Hum Ko Deewana Kar Gaye
Label: T-Series
T-Series have never left a stone unturned when it comes to the music on their label. Also they keep an ace in hand when it comes to music of a film produced by them. Adnan Sami's score for 'Lucky - No Time For Love' is a good example to state. Now their next production 'Hum Ko Deewana Kar Gaye' has music by Anu Malik and stars Akshay Kumar, Bipasha Basu and Katrina Kaif along with 'Maine Pyaar Kiya' jodi of Salman Khan and Bhagyashree in a special appearance. No wonder one can sense good music in the making for this 'Raj Kanwar' directed film.
7) Fanaah
Label: Yash Raj Music
Oh, how much have we loved music coming from Jatin Lalit! Though there has been a lull from their front for quite some time, we still expect a moon from the composers of DDLJ, Mohabbatein and Hum Tum. 'Fanaah' by Yash Raj films should be one such flick that should extract a great score from them. Presence of Aamir Khan and Kajol only soars up the expectations further.
8) Janeman
Label: T-Series
Now this one falls under the category of "fast-track entertainment" in the making. Sajid Nadiadwala, Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan had so much fun with the music of 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi'. It was in no way, out of the world or classy but still held so much in it for the masses. With Anu Malik at the helm this time around and Preity Zinta as the 'janeman', one can look forward to another foot tapping 'dhamaal' score!
9) Baabul
Label: T-Series
In 'Baabul', you CAN expect some 'rona-dhona' stuff. After all how can one forget some soul stirring tunes from Ravi Chopra's last 'Baghban'? Aadesh Srivastava returns to compose for this Amitabh Bachchan starrer. With the young brigade of Salman Khan, John Abraham and Rani Mukherjee for company, one can look forward to some romantic melodies as well. Big B sung for a number of tracks in 'Baghban'. Will he do it again for 'Baabul'?
10) Umraao Jaan - Anu Malik
Label: Saregama HMV
This is one film that will involve a lot of comparisons, probably even more than 'Don'. After all it has always been considered an almost impossible task to recreate the magic of Umrao Jaan's music. Would Anu Malik be able to be on par with Khayyam saab? Would he be able to come up with a score that would excite the music lovers of 21st century? Will J.P. Dutta manage to do the impossible? And can Aishwarya match up to the diva - Rekha? We definitely hope so!
11) 36 China Town
Label: Tips
Here comes Himesh Reshammiya, who makes a belated appearance in this list. Mostly consistent with his work, he has now hit big time post Aitraaz, Aashiq Banaya Aapne and most recently Aksar. Subhash Ghai and Abbas-Mustan trusting him once more after 'Aitraaz' only proves the point that he has in him what it takes to come up with a good commercial score. '36, China Town' should be a good 'thrilling' score for Reshammiya fans.
12) Vivaah
Label: Saregama-HMV
This would be an important soundtrack for Soorja Barjatya. After 'Maine Pyaar Kiya' and 'Hum Aapke Hain Kaun', neither 'Hum Saath Saath Hai' nor 'Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon' have been able to create the same magic as the first two. By roping in Ravindra Jain for 'Vivaah', Barjatyas have indeed played a gamble for this Shahid Kapoor-Amrita Rao starrer. We would be looking forward to this gamble playing off for the sake of everyone involved.
13) Gangster
Just like Chopras and Johars, Bhatts too have a good reputation as far as music from their films are concerned. OK, so 'Nazar' was a one off case but then 'Murder', 'Zeher', 'Kalyug' and a dozen more flicks from Vishesh Films have boasted of a good soundtrack. Emraan Hashmi's presence in a movie stands for a 'Superhit' musical score and 'Gansgter' should not be an exception!
14) Othello's adaptation
A movie coming from Vishal Bhardwaj is a keenly awaited affair on this side of the century. And why not when there has been a widely acclaimed 'Maqbool' behind him. Want to hear a classy musical score that would haunt for days to come? Then hear out Vishal's compositions in 'Maachis' and 'Maqbool' to name a few. With a subject like the one chosen by Bhardwaj [Othello's adaptation], there is ample scope of music playing an important role in the narrative. Gulzar's poetry will just add to the effect. The background score should be a stunner too!
15) Marigold: An Adventure in India
This is a gamble that we are willing to play! Though the music should be good for this international collaboration, we are making a fair assumption that 'Marigold' would finally release in 2006 since this Salman Khan movie has been in news for quite a long time. Yet another movie that has Shankar Ehsaan Loy handling the music department, it also has Hollywood composer David Newman at the helm.
