Bollywood actor Bob Christo, the man who played "gora" henchman in films of the eighties and nineties, including Amitabh Bachchan's " Namak Halal" and " Agneepath", passed away in Bangalore on Sunday afternoon.

The 70-year-old actor, of Australian origin, died of "rupture of left ventricle free valve", or cardiac rupture in simple terms, at Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, sources in the hospital told PTI.

Christo was admitted to the hospital yesterday after he complained of chest pain, and it turned out that he had a heart attack. The doctors performed angioplasty but his condition continued to be critical. One of the arteries even had a 90 per cent block.

Sources said the actor, known for his bald look, was working on his biography, which he was planning to be launch by actor Ajay Kumar sometime later this year.

He got his first break, as a villain, in a Hindi movie the Sanjay Khan-directed,"Abdullah" in 1980.

Since then, he has appeared in over 200 movies, including "Qurbani", "Sarfarosh", "Kismat", "Gumrah", "Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja", "Agneepath" and "Mr India" , released in the 1980s and 90s.

He had made Bangalore his home for the past several years. Christo was said to be inactive from the Hindi movie industry for the last eight years.

Farah Ali Khan tweeted, "Recd some sad news today. Actor Bob Christo who worked in my dads film Abdullah passed away in Bangalore 2day."

May he rest in peace.

Bollywood baddie Bob Christo dead

Last updated on: March 21, 2011 13:03 IST
Bob ChristoVeteran Bollywood actor Bob Christo, who essayed the role of a villain in films of the eighties and nineties, passed away here on Sunday afternoon. He was 70.

His business partner and family friend, Khaleem Pasha, said: "He was hospitalised after a massive heart attack on Saturday afternoon. He passed away today (Sunday)."

Christo acted in over 200 films. He died at the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology in Bangalore.

According to hospital sources, the actor was brought to hospital after he complained of chest pain and suffered a massive heart attack.

He underwent angiography that revealed 90 per cent blocks in one his arteries. All attempts to save the actor failed as the angioplasty and an open-heart surgery failed to help him recover.

"His heart was weak and his condition was critical," Dr C N Manjunath, director of Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research was quoted as saying.

Christo, an Australian, first made waves in Indian films when he was introduced by actor-filmmaker Sanjay Khan [ Images ] in the film "Abdullah".

Says Pasha, "Bob came to India [ Images ] to meet actress Parveen Babi, but ended up getting a break in the film Abdullah."

Bob was a qualified civil engineer, but his good looks got him modelling assignments. He even got a small role in a Marlon Brando-starrer, but on a friend''s advice let it go, and instead began building film sets.

His modelling assignment made him travel to various countries. When he was waiting for a work permit for Muscat he came across an article in Time magazine about Bollywood and decided to come to India to meet Parveen Babi.

The actor acted in films like Kaalia, Mard, Nastik, Qurbani, Mr India, Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja and Gumraah.

The actor's biography, Flashback: My Times in Bollywood and Beyond, was to be released by Akshay Kumar [ Images ] in June. Bob was planning to return to Hindi films in an Akshay Kumar film.

He had also signed a few South Indian movies, including one with Malayalam superstar Mohanlal.
